Concurrent with the rise of real-time wireless systems enabled by the Internet of Things, the age of information (AoI) has been widely perceived as a crucial destination-centric performance metric to quantify the timeliness of data delivery. This paper deals with the analysis of information freshness in a multi-source M/G/1 queueing system with utilization of idle server time, referred to as server vacation, in an effective manner. In particular, the status update packets in our model are generated independently by a finite set of source nodes and according to a Poisson process, while their service time follows a general random variable. Using stochastic decomposition and the Laplace-Stieltjes transform, we derive the average AoI (AAoI) expression for the multi-source M/G/1 queueing model with generally-distributed vacation time in closed form. Our numerical simulations validate the accuracy of the derived AAoI expression and assess the impact of different parameters on the system performance.

We report on an ab initio model to describe single- and double-ionization processes in antiproton collisions with atoms and molecules. Our model is based on a fully correlated close-coupling approach and a Dyson orbital analysis. Furthermore, we employ the concept of a correlation integral in order to quantify and gain insights into the effects of electronic correlation on the ionization processes. Our model is applied to the prototype antiproton-helium and antiproton–molecular hydrogen collision systems in the keV energy range.

Tiny perturbations may trigger large responses in systems near criticality, shifting them across equilibria. Committed minorities are suggested to be responsible for the emergence of collective behaviors in many physical, social, and biological systems. Using evolutionary game theory, we address the question whether a finite fraction of zealots can drive the system to large-scale coordination. We find that a tipping point exists in coordination games, whereas the same phenomenon depends on the selection pressure, update rule, and network structure in other types of games. Our study paves the way to understand social systems driven by the individuals' benefit in the presence of zealots, such as human vaccination behavior or cooperative transports in animal groups.

Many children have special difficulties to interact with their counterparts, but use tablets and smartphones with resourcefulness. Cards with graphic symbols are very useful to assist communication. However, the teacher who works in a classroom with forty students in Brazil does not have time to train the special student to properly use this alternative means of communication. Therefore, this research developed and tested an application installed on a smartphone, which identified the communication card and verbalized its meaning, repeating this action as often as necessary without teacher intervention. It also allows one to test the knowledge of students. The system is based on a web application with source code developed by Google and electromagnetic sensors fixed on the cards. The functionality test showed good performance and usability and may be useful in the training of children with communication difficulties.
