Multi-Robot System (MRS) is an important research area within Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The balancing between reactivity and social cooperation in autonomous robots is really considered as a challenge to get an effective solution. To do so, we propose to use the concept of five capabilities model which is based on Environment, Self, Planner, Competence and Communication. We illustrate our line of thought with a Benchmark Production System used as a running example to explain our contribution.

Single clock distribution over a large high performance chip can be very challenging. This led to evolution of globally asynchronous and locally Synchronous (GalS) systems in modern deep sub-micron (DSM) technology. In GalS mostly bundled data protocols which are based on handshake mechanism, are used for data transfer. But these protocols rely on timing assumptions between handshake signals and data values that causes timing closure problems, which poses strict constraints in system-on-chip (SoC) design. This work leverages quasi delay insensitive (QDI) designs to propose GalS design templates. This will facilitate the use of GalS systems in a conventional digital design flow with minimal intervention to interfacing modules. Modifications for two different quasi delay insensitive (QDI) asynchronous designs have been suggested, implemented and verified by using the proposed templates. Power, energy and latency have been compared for two different interfaces.

Globalization trends in integrated circuit (IC) design using deep submicron (DSM) technologies are leading to increased vulnerability of ICs against malicious intrusions. These malicious intrusions are referred as hardware Trojans. One way to address this threat is to utilize unique electrical signatures of ICs. However, this technique requires analyzing extensive sensor data to detect the intruded integrated circuits. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose to combine the signature extraction mechanism with machine learning algorithms to develop a self-learning framework that can detect the intruded integrated circuits. The proposed approach applies the lazy, eager or probabilistic learners to generate self-learning prediction model based on the electrical signatures. In order to validate this framework, we applied it on a recently proposed signature based hardware Trojan detection technique. The cross validation comparison of these learner shows that eager learners are able to detect the intrusion with 96% accuracy and also require less amount of memory and processing power compared to other machine learning techniques.

Fault-Tolerant Scheduling for Real-Time Tasks on Multiple Earth-Observation Satellites

Fault-tolerance plays an important role in improving the reliability of multiple earth-observing satellites, especially in emergent scenarios such as obtaining photographs on battlefields or earthquake areas. Fault tolerance can be implemented through scheduling approaches. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to fault-tolerant scheduling on satellites. To address this issue, we propose a novel dynamic fault-tolerant scheduling model for real-time tasks running on multiple observation satellites. In this model, the primary-backup policy is employed to tolerate one satellite's permanent failure at one time instant. In the light of the fault-tolerant model, we develop a novel fault-tolerant satellite s cheduling algorithm named FTSS. To improve the resource utilization, we apply the overlapping technology that includes primary-backup copy overlapping (i.e., PB overlapping) and backup-backup copy overlapping (i.e., BB overlapping). According to the satellites characterized with time windows for observations, we extensively analyze the overlapping mechanism on satellites. We integrate the overlapping mechanism with FTSS, which employs the task merging strategies including primary-backup copy merging (i.e., PB merging), backup-backup copy merging (i.e., BB merging) and primary-primary copy merging (i.e., PP merging). These merging strategies are used to decrease the number of tasks required to be executed, thereby enhancing system schedulability. To demonstrate the superiority of our FTSS, we conduct extensive experiments using the real-world satellite parameters supplied from the satellite tool kit or STK;we compare FTSS with the three baseline algorithms, namely, NMFTSS, NOFTSS, and NMNOFTSS. The experimental results indicate that FTSS efficiently improves the scheduling quality of others and is suitable for fault-tolerant satellite scheduling. © 1990-2012 IEEE.

Currently, Network Mobility (NEMO) Basic Support protocol enables the attachment of mobile networks to different points in the Internet. It permits session continuity for all nodes in the mobile network to be reachable as the network moves. While this standard is based on the MobileIPv6 standard, it inherits these disadvantages such as security vulnerabilities. To manage the problems of NEMO, many schemes combine it with a network-based approach such as Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6). Despite the fact that this latter expedites the real deployment of IP mobility management;it suffers from lack of security. Therefore, we propose an Efficient and Secure Mutual Authentication Mechanism during initial attachment in NEMO-based Proxy Mobile IPv6 Networks called EMA-NEMO based PMIPv6 in order to provide mutual authentication between a mobile router and diameter server during initial attachment of the mobile router to a PMIPv6 domain. Moreover, we evaluate the performance of our scheme using the Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) software which has proved that authentication goals are achieved.

Population stratification is a useful approach for a better understanding of complex biological problems in human health and wellbeing. The proposal that such stratification applies to the human gut microbiome, in the form of distinct community composition types termed enterotypes, has been met with both excitement and controversy. In view of accumulated data and re-analyses since the original work, we revisit the concept of enterotypes, discuss different methods of dividing up the landscape of possible microbiome configurations, and put these concepts into functional, ecological and medical contexts. As enterotypes are of use in describing the gut microbial community landscape and may become relevant in clinical practice, we aim to reconcile differing views and encourage a balanced application of the concept.

Due to the exponentially increasing size of design space of microprocessors and time-consuming simulations, predictive models have been widely employed in design space exploration (DSE). Traditional approaches mostly build a program-specific predictor that needs a large number of program-specific samples. Thus considerable simulation cost is required for each program. In this paper, we study the novel problem of transferring knowledge from the labeled samples of previous programs to help predict the responses of the new target program whose labeled samples are very sparse. Inspired by the recent advances of transfer learning, we propose a transfer learning based DSE framework TrDSE to build a more efficient and effective predictive model for the target program with only a few simulations by borrowing knowledge from previous programs. Specifically, TrDSE includes two phases: 1) clustering the programs based on the proposed orthogonal array sampling and the distribution related features, and 2) with the guidance of clustering results, predicting the responses of configurations in design space of the target program by a transfer learning based regression algorithm. We evaluate the proposed TrDSE on the benchmarks of SPEC CPU 2006 suite. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework is more efficient and effective than state-of-art DSE techniques.

Quantum state tomography via local measurements is an efficient tool for characterizing quantum states. However, it requires that the original global state be uniquely determined (UD) by its local reduced density matrices (RDMs). In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a class of states that are UD by their RDMs under the assumption that the global state is pure, but fail to be UD in the absence of that assumption. This discovery allows us to classify quantum states according to their UD properties, with the requirement that each class be treated distinctly in the practice of simplifying quantum state tomography. Additionally, we experimentally test the feasibility and stability of performing quantum state tomography via the measurement of local RDMs for each class. These theoretical and experimental results demonstrate the advantages and possible pitfalls of quantum state tomography with local measurements.

Nowadays, more and more physical devices embed computing and networking capabilities and are visible on the Internet. These devices include webcams, net-printers, and industrial control equipments, etc. Collecting information about these devices is crucial to preserve cyber-security and facilitate security auditing for system administrators. In this paper, we propose a scalable framework for physical device profiling. It leverages banner grabbing to identify device types and running services, and uses clock skew to determine a device ID. Our framework scales well. We implement a prototype system and use it to profile Webcams and industrial control device. The results show that our system can effectively profile and identify Webcams in real time. We deploy it on the cloud server and use it to detect 4 billion IP addresses to profile 1.2 million Webcams and more than 60 thousand industrial control devices in 20 hours.

Hypersonic missile control is studied in the terminal phase and addressed using adaptive continuous higher order sliding mode (AHOSM) control techniques. The AHOSM controller, specifically the continuous HOSM finite reaching time controller driven by the continuous adaptive second order (super-twisting) sliding mode disturbance observer has been proposed and studied. The adaptive algorithm is based on equivalent control concept and allows not overestimating the control gain that mitigates the control chattering. The proposed continuous AHOSM control has been validated via simulations of a hypersonic missile in the terminal phase. The robustness and high accuracy of the output tracking in the presence of matched and unmatched external disturbances and missile model uncertainties was demonstrated. © 2015, E-flow American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). all rights reserved.
