Population stratification is a useful approach for a better understanding of complex biological problems in human health and wellbeing. The proposal that such stratification applies to the human gut microbiome, in the form of distinct community composition types termed enterotypes, has been met with both excitement and controversy. In view of accumulated data and re-analyses since the original work, we revisit the concept of enterotypes, discuss different methods of dividing up the landscape of possible microbiome configurations, and put these concepts into functional, ecological and medical contexts. As enterotypes are of use in describing the gut microbial community landscape and may become relevant in clinical practice, we aim to reconcile differing views and encourage a balanced application of the concept.

Design and fabrication of structural color by local surface plasmonic meta-molecules

In this paper, we propose a new form of nanostructures with Al film deposited on a patterned dielectric material for generating structural color, which is induced by local surface plasmonic resonant (LSPR) absorption in sub-wavelength-indented hole/ring arrays. Unlike other reported results obtained by using focus ion beam (FIB) to create metallic nanostructures, the nano-sized hole/ring arrays in Al film in this work are replicated by high resolution electron beam lithography (EBL) combined with self-aligned metallization. Clear structural color is observed and systematically studied by numerical simulations as well as optical characterizations. The central color is strongly related to the geometric size, which provides us with good opportunities to dye the colorless Al surface by controlling the hole/ring dimensions (both diameter and radius), and to open up broad applications in display, jewelry decoration, green production of packing papers, security code, and counterfeits prevention.

In this paper, an impedance control is proposed for a robotic needle with a fiber optic force sensor. The fiber optic force sensor is placed at the tip of the needle to directly measure the interaction force between needle and soft tissue, overcoming the noise like friction force. The sensor is sensitive to the temperature condition, and their relationship is first established, and then used to compensate for the temperature influence to enhance the force measurement. An impedance control is presented based on insertion model whose impedance parameters are identified in terms of acquired test data, and experimental results show that the control strategy is effective to avoid excessive insertion force, reducing the risk of robotic needle.

Nano casting fabrication of porous N-doped carbon using melamine-formaldehyde resins

Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (N-doped MC) with high nitrogen content was fabricated by a facile nano casting approach using melamine formaldehyde resin as nitrogen and carbon source. The textural and morphological features of as-prepared N-doped MC were investigated by appropriate techniques such as N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Characterization results were demonstrated that N doped MC possessed highly ordered structure, large specific surface area (1262 m2/gm) and pore volume (0.908 cm3/g) and it owned high nitrogen content 13.15 wt.%. Due to elevated N content and surface area this material may useful in energy storage systems, catalysis, biosensors, nanodevices and other energy applications.

Real-time AGC dispatch units considering wind power and ramping capacity of thermal units

The high penetration of wind energy sources in power systems has substantially increased the demand for faster-ramping thermal units participating in the frequency regulation *** fulfill the automatic generation control(AGC)and compensate the influence of wind power fluctuations simultaneously,ramping capacity should be considered in the dispatch model of ***,conventional methods in this area do not take the impact of transmission loss into the dispatch model,or rely on offline network model and parameters,failing to reflect the real relationships between the wind farms and thermal *** paper proposes an online approach for AGC dispatch units considering the above ***,the power loss sensitivity is online identified using recursive least square method based on the real-time data of phasor measurement *** sets up power balance constraint and results in a more accurate dispatch ***,an improved multi-objective optimization model of dispatch is proposed and a connection is established between the thermal units with fast ramping capacity and the wind farms with rapid *** algorithm is used to solve the dispatch *** proposed method is compared with conventional methods in simulation case in the IEEE 30-bus ***,simulation results verify the validity and the feasibility of identification method and optimization model.

Effects of FOXO1 mediated regulation of mitochondrial function in diabetic wound healing

OBJECTIVE Refractory wounds in diabetic patients constitute a serious complication that often leads to amputation with limited treatment *** studies have shown that the imbalance of mitochondrial dynamics was associated with the increased reactive oxygen species(ROS)production in endothelial cells,which is a significant contributor to the microvascular complications of *** present study was designed to determine the involvement of transcription factor FOXO1in diabetic wound healing and investigate underlying ***&RESULTS Impaired mitochondrial networks and increased phosphorylation of dynaminrelated protein-1(Drp1)at ser616,a protein required for mitochondrial fission,were observed in human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)24 h after exposure to high concentrations of *** of FOXO1 by si RNA or by FOXO1 selective inhibitor AS1842856 abrogated high glucos-induced alterations in mitochondrial networks and phosphorylation of *** with AS1842856 or si RNA of FOXO1 could significantly increase the mitochondrial membrane potential and suppress the overproduction of ROS induced by high *** of AS1842856 inhibited glucoseinduced apoptosis,ameliorated capillary tube formation in *** vivo,AS1842856 dose-dependently rescued the delay of wound closure in diabetic mice,and5 mg·kg-1of AS1842856 treatment significantly increased the mean perfusion *** These findings suggested that FOXO1 is critical to preserve mitochondrial quantity and function in endothelial cells,inhibition of FOXO1 rescued the delayed wound healing and improved wound angiogenesis in diabetic mice.

Terrain-based localization is an alternate to the global positioning system (GPS) in signal blocked areas. However, terrain-based localization technique may suffer from low accuracy or even fail when brake vibration occurs. This paper presents a real-time algorithm for vehicle localization which is robust against brake vibration. The input includes a reference map of pitch difference and measurements from rear wheel encoders and inertial measurement units (IMU). This method consists of two steps. In the first step, terrain map is generated using pitch difference at equidistant intervals. After that, the Bayesian inference and particle filters are adopted in the second step to identify the vehicle location during travel. To enhance system stability, we propose dynamic distributions of filter variances according to acceleration input. Experimental results demonstrate that the localization method with dynamic distributions can localize the vehicle quickly with high accuracy even when a quite severe shuddering happens.

By using stochastic computation, a fully-parallel low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder can be implemented using a lower wire complexity. In order to enhance the decoder performance, probability tracers, such as up/down counters, are added at each edge between variable nodes and check nodes, as described in previous literature. However, this causes a large decoding latency and a high number of decoding failures. In this paper, a convergence-optimized structure for variable nodes is proposed that is able to overcome these issues. As a result, the throughput for the proposed decoder is 20.5Gb/s, which is 101% higher than the original counter-based decoder presented in the previous literature.

A dual-pass data assimilation scheme for estimating surface fluxes with FY3A-VIRR land surface temperature

In this work, a dual-pass data assimilation scheme is developed to improve predictions of surface flux. Pass 1 of the dual-pass data assimilation scheme optimizes the model vegetation parameters at the weekly temporal scale, and Pass 2 optimizes the soil moisture at the daily temporal scale. Based on ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF), the land surface temperature(LST) data derived from the new generation of Chinese meteorology satellite(FY3A-VIRR) are assimilated into common land model(CoLM) for the first time. Six sites, Daman, Guantao, Arou, BJ, Miyun and Jiyuan, are selected for the data assimilation experiments and include different climatological conditions. The results are compared with those from a dataset generated by a multi-scale surface flux observation system that includes an automatic weather station(AWS), eddy covariance(EC) and large aperture scintillometer(LAS). The results indicate that the dual-pass data assimilation scheme is able to reduce model uncertainties and improve predictions of surface flux with the assimilation of FY3A-VIRR LST data.
