In the process industry, engineering functions for the administration and optimization of devices are gaining importance in comparison with process control functions. Thus, the term 'asset optimization' is often used to describe techniques that exploit the full potential of plant assets. This applies in particular to field devices used in production processes. This paper presents the asset management box (AMBOX) which is an open, configuration-free and manufacturer-independent access to field device functionality for the Profibus-PA Fieldbus, creating an additional information channel between field and plant control level.

Many studies are realized aiming the control of prosthetic devices using the myoelectric signal acquired on the reminiscent member of the amputee. This work investigates the viability of myoelectric signal recognition by processing and analyzing the power spectral density of this signal. As shown in this text, the proper recognition of four distinct myoelectric signal classes was achieved using this methodology, being each of these classes associated to a different hand motion. Data were acquired using two dry surface electrodes placed on the forearm, and only the normalized power spectral densities of the signals were used during project and evaluation phases. The algorithm presented has been designed to allow real-time evaluation, for practical implementation feasibility. Moreover, since PSD normalization is evaluated before the recognition phase, every absolute value is discarded, allowing the algorithm to ensure some insensibility to impedance fluctuations occurring on the interfaces between the surface electrodes and the skin.

In order to overcome the effect of the assumption between emissivity and wavelength on the measurement of true temperature and spectral emissivity for most engineering materials, a neural network based method is proposed for data processing while a blackbody furnace and three optical filters with known spectral transmittance curves were used to make up a true target. The experimental results show that the calculated temperatures are in good agreement with the temperature of the blackbody furnace, and the calculated spectral emissivity curves are in good agreement with the spectral transmittance curves of the filters. The method proposed has been proved to be an effective method for solving the problem of true temperature and emissivity measurement, and it can overcome the effect of the assumption between emissivity and wavelength on the measurement of true temperature and spectral emissivity for most engineering materials.

The conditions and time scale of coating materials with the dry surface treatment (DST) differ significantly from the ones applied in conventional extrusion, solvent-based and dispersion coating. In DST, the coating and surface finishing are combined in steps of applying layers of dry coating particles onto a substrate, thereafter densifying and smoothening the surface layer during a thermomechanical fixing phase. First, an electric field is used to direct charged coating particles onto the surface, where the deposited layer attaches mainly electrostatically. Secondly, during the heating and compression phase, the polymer layer should exhibit sufficient flowability, deformability and affinity to the substrate surface in order to provide an adequate and homogeneous coating. The dwell time in the heated roll nip can be adjusted to give the polymeric particles sufficient time to sinter and homogenise throughout the layer by diffusion mechanisms. The layering, softening and immobilisation of the coating should be accomplished within milliseconds, where governing factors for example are particle size, thermal conductivity within the layer, and other polymer characteristics such as softening temperature and rheological behaviour. At low coat weights, a crucial requirement for obtaining a uniform and smooth coating with a sufficient covering ability is an even distribution of particles of a fine particle size, since large particles require longer time to flow sufficiently and level out. The heat treatment is ideally used for controlling the rheological behaviour of the polymer in order to achieve an adequate film formation and allow polymer penetration into the porous surface of the paper and thereby anchor the coating layer mechanically to the substrate and seal it. The dry surface treatment (DST) method differs significantly from the conventional pigment-coating processes. The coating layer is applied to the substrate in the form of dry powdery particles and fixed on the surface with a thermomechanical treatment in a heated nip. In DST, the wetting of the base substrate is avoided, coating application is done without contact with the substrate and immediately to the required coat weight without any intensive coating penetration into the substrate. In this paper we present the possibility to modify and control the structure and properties of the two-component (the coating system consists of pigments and a latex binder) dry surface treated papers. It was noted that processability in DST, as well as the properties of the coated paper, were significantly affected by the thermomechanical - the temperature dependent viscoelastic - properties of the latex binder. It appeared beneficial to have a high stiffness polymeric binder, particularly in the temperature region above its main (glass) transition, corresponding to a high gel content. This choice of binder decreased DST paper sticking to the heated roll during the fixation step of the coating and improved the surface strength of the final product. It was found that DST papers are in many respects comparable to conventionally wet-coated papers with similar amount and type of coating components. In the case of DST papers, the coating structure appeared however to be more open, especially with high gel latexes. This could be an important variable when adjusting to different printing methods, e.g. with or without drying capacity. Furthermore, coating penetration into the base paper was suppressed by employing the DST.

The dry surface treatment (DST) provides a combined process for coating and smoothening a paper surface using a variety of materials in order to obtain the desired paper characteristics. By applying the coating materials in a dry powdery form and anchoring the coating layer to the paper surface in a subsequent thermomechanical fixing phase, the drawbacks related to the presence of water in conventional suspension coating can be avoided. In a simplest case, the DST coating contains two components, the pigment and the thermoplastic polymeric binder. The sintering and binding steps during the DST fixing phase should be completed within a timescale of milliseconds, which is markedly shorter than time available for consolidation and film forming in the case of conventional wet-coating. In DST, low binder elasticity at elevated temperatures and a mismatched combination of the fixation conditions can lead to coating sticking to the contacting heated roll. We have studied the effects of binder content, the viscoelastic properties of the binder and fixing conditions on the formed coating structure and surface strength of DST papers prepared at a laboratory scale. The effects of the thermomechanical properties of the polymeric binder are discussed in relation to the transient fixing process, in which the particle size and the temperature distribution in the coating layer during the fixing also are key factors.
