The problem of finding and evaluating effective ways of integrating software testing concepts and related techniques into introductory programming courses is still an open research question. In this paper, we present multiple studies that assess our approach to integrating software testing in computer Science (CS) and software engineering (SE) courses. Each study uses SEP-CyLE (software engineering and Programming Cyberlearning Environment), an external, web-based learning tool to help instructors integrate testing concepts into their courses. These empirical studies were conducted in eight CS/SE course sections at a medium-sized public university. The results show (1) SEP-CyLE can be efficiently used in the classroom to impact the testing knowledge gained by students, and (2) students find that SEP CyLE is a useful learning resource that effectively helps them complete course tasks and better master course concepts.

Medical device security is a growing concern with increasing incorporation of complex software and hardware. Security threats exploiting vulnerabilities in medical devices may directly impact patient safety. Standardization and federal organizations are hence, actively involved in setting up new paradigms for guidance and regulation of security throughout the lifecycle. To protect medical devices against threats a risk-based framework that continually manages and assesses security risks along with their proactive addressing is highly recommended. In this paper, we model a multi-modal design approach for risk assessment in medical devices and propose an adaptive remediation scheme to mitigate security threats. Our multi-modal approach is integrated into the hardware-software development with a middleware for interaction between the modes. This provides an effective premarket risk management while the adaptive remediation scheme pro-actively mitigate risk during postmarket deployment. We model our approaches in detail and demonstrate them in a pacemaker design model and deployment scenario. ©2017 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

This paper presents a fast traffic manager architecture targeting to meet some requirements of the 5G next generation cellular communication technology, and of the high-speed networking devices in the software defined networking context. Also, an important goal is to reduce latency to a minimum in order to best support the upcoming 5G. The proposed traffic manager functionalities are policing, scheduling, shaping, and queuing of incoming traffic (packets) on egress ports in a network processing unit. Policing, scheduling, and shaping guarantee that packets are sent in such a way to meet the allowed bandwidth quotas for each flow, and enforce some desired quality of service. The implemented architecture is based on the C coding language and is synthesized with the Vivado High Level Synthesis tool. A throughput improvement of 2.0× over previous reported works is claimed. The proposed design of the traffic manager is capable of providing 15.8 Gbps per egress port for 64 byte sized packets, and it works at 93 MHz when implemented with a Zynq 7000 FPGA from Xilinx.

Social media offers online data source where internet users' share their opinions, views and discuss any news or events that happen around the world. Twitter is a popular social media which effectively takes part in any mega event and is used before, during and after live events. Some tweets become trend based on their popularity. The trending tweets are classified by twitter into categories like: Sports (S), Entertainment (E), Politics (P), and Technology (T) which are used in our work. We have used context based meanings to further improve the trending tweet classification results. In this article, we have verified the twitter's automated classification results with manual classification by experts. Furthermore, we compared the classification results with SVM, Linear Regression, Logistic Regression and Naive Bayes implemented in Weka tool. We found that twitter's classifier works with almost 89% accuracy in our dataset. This work would contribute in improving misclassification of data of different categories on social media.

Search techniques are an integral part for text authentication and plagiarism checks. In this work, our aim is to develop an efficient search algorithm for Arabic text (words and sentences) in a large database. The database contains the authentic source of information where information is ordered; thus the efficient algorithm can be used for searching the text in the database. The proposed search algorithm uses a quasi-Newton method - Secant method instead of the traditional binary search. The results show that the secant method has much faster convergence property than the binary search and hence the algorithm can find the search text in a shorter time period.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is an important public health issue with deteriorating impact on the vision of its patient. In this study, a novel approach is proposed for the characterization of abnormal vessels based on a spatial point pattern method. Points of interest corresponding to vascular junctions are detected by a perceptual organization technique, and then second-order statistical measures are computed. Significant differences (p<0.05) between healthy retinal regions and areas with neovascularizations were obtained, which suggests that the second-order statistics could be used as a relevant feature to discriminate the abnormal from the normal vasculature. The relevance of the new measures was also evaluated with respect to an existing set of features using classification. The inclusion of a new second-order measure increases the characterization sensitivity against the already existing features from 75.76% to 84.85%.

In the year of 2017, the capital expenditure of Flashbased Solid State Drivers (SSDs) keeps declining and the storage capacity of SSDs keeps increasing. As a result, the "selling point" of traditional spinning Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) as a backend storage - low cost and large capacity - is no longer unique, and eventually they will be replaced by low-end SSDs which have large capacity but perform orders of magnitude better than HDDs. Thus, it is widely believed that all-flash multi-tier storage systems will be adopted in the enterprise datacenters in the near future. However, existing caching or tiering solutions for SSD-HDD hybrid storage systems are not suitable for all-flash storage systems. This is because that all-flash storage systems do not have a large speed difference (e.g., 10x) among each tier. Instead, different specialties (such as high performance, high capacity, etc.) of each tier should be taken into consideration. Motivated by this, we develop an automatic data placement manager called "AutoTiering" to handle virtual machine disk files (VMDK) allocation and migration in an all-flash multitier datacenter to best utilize the storage resource, optimize the performance, and reduce the migration overhead. AutoTiering is based on an optimization framework, whose core technique is to predict VM's performance change on different tiers with different specialties without conducting real migration. As far as we know, AutoTiering is the first optimization solution designed for all-flash multi-tier datacenters. We implement AutoTiering on VMware ESXi [1], and experimental results show that it can significantly improve the I/O performance compared to existing solutions. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Combining exercises with game elements (exergaming) is a promising approach to increase physical activity of users not intrinsically motivated to exercise. Multiplayer games are particularly promising, since they add a social (competitive or collaborative) component. However, exercising together can become frustrating if users have vastly different abilities. In this paper, we review existing approaches for balancing differing physical abilities of players in competitive exergames, and based on this, we propose a novel exertion-based balancing formula. In contrast to previous work, we evaluate exertion-based balancing formulas with a moderately complex gameplay and show that it results in closer competitive gameplay and a more enjoyable game experience. The proposed formula can be applied to a wide variety of exergames and has the potential to increase compliance and long-term use of exergames. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. The paper portrays novel enhanced image classification approach with fusion of Machine Learning Algorithms at Feature Level as well as Decision Level with help of Niblack Thresholding and Thepade's Sorted N-ary Block Truncation Coding. The proposed fusion based image classification method is experimented with help of a database with total one thousand image samples covering ten assorted image categories with 100 images per category. Classification Accuracy is taken into account for the performance evaluation purpose of existing and the proposed Image Classification Technique. The results of experimental analysis explicitly reveal the performance improvement with proposed TSnBTC than Niblack thresholding, also the fusion of these two methods reveal further better performance with several Classifiers proving the worth of proposed fusion based image classification technique. Overall the higher classification accuracy is given by Random Forest immediately followed by ensemble of Random Forest with SVM.

The development and adopting of advanced communication technologies provide mobile users more convenience to connect any wireless network anytime and anywhere. Therefore, a large number of base stations (BS) are demanded keeping users connectivity, enhancing network capacity, and guarantee a sustained users Quality of Experiences (QoS). However, increasing the number of BS leads to an increase in the ecological ad radiation hazards. In order to green communication, many factors should be taken into consideration, i.e., saving energy, guarantee QoS, and reducing pollution hazards. Therefore, we propose tethered balloon technology that can replace a large number of BS and reduce ecological and radiation hazards due to its high altitude and feasible green and healthy broadband communication. The main contribution of this paper is to deploy tethered balloon technology at different altitude and measure the power density. Furthermore, we evaluate the measurement of power density from different height of tethered balloon comparison with traditional wireless communication technologies. The simulation results showed that tethered balloon technology can deliver green communication effectively and efficiently without any hazardous impacts. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
