The concept of a modular climbing caterpillar robot is inspired by the kinematics of the real caterpillar. Due to the fixed constraints between the suckers and wall, the gait of the caterpillar robot engages a changing kinematic chain which is from an open chain to a closed chain, and then to an open chain orderly. This paper investigates the joint control methods of the gait in detail. During the open chain periods, an Unsymmetrical Phase Method (UPM) is applied to ensure the reliable attachment of the passive suckers to the wall. But in the closed chain state, a four links kinematics model is adopted to fulfill the fixed constraints produced by the attached suckers. By combining the two methods together, we acquire complete joint control trajectories for a modular caterpillar robot with seven joints. At the end of this paper, on-site tests confirm the above principles and the validity of the climbing gait.

In New Zealand and Australia, the BRACElet project has been investigating students' acquisition of programming skills in introductory programming courses. The project has explored students' skills in basic syntax, tracing code, understanding code, and writing code, seeking to establish the relationships between these skills. This ITiCSE working group report presents the most recent step in the BRACElet project, which includes replication of earlier analysis using a far broader pool of naturally occurring data, refinement of the SOLO taxonomy in code-explaining questions, extension of the taxonomy to code-writing questions, extension of some earlier studies on students' 'doodling' while answering exam questions, and exploration of a further theoretical basis for work that until now has been primarily empirical.

Fault detection, isolation and correction of nonlinear systems continue to be important problems to be addressed due to the increased complexities of more advanced systems. This paper addresses the issue of fault tolerant, robust control design; a generalized adaptive fuzzy neural network-based inference system is used for the compensation due to faults and evolutionary techniques are used to tune the fuzzy neural inference parameters. A linear transformation of the standard squared-error fitness is used here. This strategy can be used in a closed-loop feedback control structure to improve performance. This is illustrated on a discrete-time model of a nonlinear system and shows that proposed method provides fault compensation for nonlinear systems.

Information retrieval is one of the major research areas due to accumulation of huge information in digital form. Various techniques of Information retrieval are based on the fact that terms contained in a document along with their frequency of occurrence signify the semantics of the document. Recent attempts to find the relevant document for a context represents documents in a vector space model as document-term vector containing term weights for every index term in that document. As there will be enormous number of index terms this leads to high dimensionality problem. We can reduce the dimensionality based on the observation that groups of terms associated with related concepts occur together or do not occur in a document based on whether the document is relevant or not to that concept. Such a group of terms Is identified as an equivalence class and can be viewed as a single dimension in a Rough set based information retrieval system. In this paper we present a hybrid clustering approach for the formation of equivalence classes of terms associated with related concepts. It uses the outcome of hierarchical clustering to provide seed points for implementing Incremental K-means algorithm. Due to the sparsity of the term vector the cosine similarity estimate was found to be ineffective for term clustering. Another promising measure of proximity estimate used in information retrieval namely Euclidian distance has a drawback that It is biased towards changes in the term frequencies in larger documents when the term weights are represented by tf-ldf estimates. Hence we propose normalization for tf-idf estimates while representing a term as a vector in a document space before clustering the terms.

Progress in microelectronics and semiconductor technology has enable new capabilities in the field of sensor construction, particularly of pH sensors based on field-effect transistors (FETs) as transducers of chemical signal. While crystalline devices present a higher sensitivity, their amorphous counterpart present a much lower fabrication cost, thus enabling the production of cheap disposable sensors for use in the food industry. Interest in biosensors consisting of a semiconductor transducer and a functionalized surface with biomolecule receptors (BioFET) continues to grow as they hold the promise for highly selective, label-free, real-time sensing as an alternative to conventional optical detection techniques. We have been involved in the development of a biosensor where the enzymatic activity of recombinant amidase from Escherichia coli is coupled to a semiconductor transducer for the detection of toxic amides in food and industrial effluents. The devices were fabricated on glass substrates by the PECVD technique in the top gate configuration, where the metallic gate is replaced by an electrolytic solution with an immersed Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Silicon nitride is used as gate dielectric enhancing the sensitivity and passivation layer used to avoid leakage and electrochemical reactions. In this article we report on the semiconductor unit, showing that the sensor displays the desired current-voltage characteristics. In addition we present an electrical model of the device, in agreement with the experimental data, that is sensitive to the pH of the solution.

EDGeS is an European funded Framework Program 7 project that aims to connect desktop and service grids together. While in a desktop grid, personal computers pull jobs when they are idle, in service grids there is a scheduler that pushes jobs to available resources. The work in EDGeS goes well beyond conceptual solutions to bridge these grids together: it reaches as far as actual implementation, standardization, deployment, application porting and training. One of the work packages of this project concerns monitoring the overall EDGeS infrastructure. Currently, this infrastructure includes two types of desktop grids, BOINC and XtremWeb, the EGEE service grid, and a couple of bridges to connect them. In this paper, we describe the monitoring effort in EDGeS: our technical approaches, the goals we achieved, and the plans for future work.

An efficient coding method for teleconferencing video and confocal microscopic image sequences

In this paper we propose a three-dimensional vector quantization-based video coding scheme. The algorithm uses a 3D vector quantization pyramidal codebook-based model with adaptive pyramidal codebook for compression. The pyramidal codebook-based model helps in getting high compression in case of modest motion. The adaptive vector quantization algorithmis used to train the codebook for optimal performance with time. Some of the distinguished features of our algorithm are its excellent performance due to its adaptive behavior to the video composition and excellent compression due to codebook approach. We also propose an efficient codebook-based post-processing techniquewhich enables the vector quantizer to possess higher correlation preservation property. Based on the special pattern of the codebook imposed by post-processing technique, a window-based fast search (WBFS) algorithm is proposed. The WBFS algorithm not only accelerates the vector quantization processing, but also results in better rate-distortion performance. The proposed approach can be used for both teleconferencing videos and to compress images obtained from confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The results show that the proposed method gave higher subjective and objective image quality of reconstructed images at a better compression ratio and presented more acceptable results when applying image processing filters such as edge detection on reconstructed images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the teleconferencing compression standards H.261 and LBG-based vector quantization techniques.

The objective of this paper is to put forward an intelligent system to assist and enable potential users who intend to make investment on Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) products. The system functions as a decision support system to help users the potentiality of investment in MEMS industry by predicting future sales and profitability based on past knowledge. In this paper work Fuzzy Logic system (FLs) is proposed, as it is conveniently adaptable to solve such problems. Among the many factors that are important for predicting MEMS industry potential, are sales, price, profit, earning, P/E ratio, PEG, P/S ratio. Some of these factors may be related, but some act independently. These factors are combined together into a finalize result. Data Fusion is the process of combining multiple economic factors in order to produce information of tactical value to the user. Briefly, in this project, the behaviour of an intelligent system is simulated by the Fuzzy Logic toolbox. In fact, the output variable and valuation scale is 'investment'. It is fuzzy variable and compared this output rate with actuality.

As a number of home network services are available and smart environment is expanding into ubiquitous computing environment, we need to protect smart environment system from illegal accesses and a variety of threats. Smart environment is exposed to various cyber attacks of Internet, involves hacking, malicious codes, worms, viruses, DoS attacks, and eavesdropping since it is connected to Internet. So in this paper, we propose authentication in a smart environment security for guaranteeing reliability and availability including authentication, authorization and security policy system. Furthermore, we describes smart environment authentication which is the basic and essential element in the pervasive concept can offer pervasive network service users convenience security.
