This study develops an adaptive handover strategy in 5G networks to tackle high mobility challenges and improve service continuity and quality. The research method uses a 5G network emulator with a topology of four base stations (gNBs) to test user equipment (UE) speeds of 20 km/h and 130 km/h. The adaptive algorithm developed utilizes data from the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) as well as the speed and direction of user mobility to make optimal handover decisions. The results show that at a speed of 130 km/h, the average handover latency reaches 12 ms, compared to 8 ms at 80 km/h. Additionally, the signal quality (RSSI) is lower at higher speeds, negatively affecting service quality. This adaptive algorithm successfully reduces handover latency and improves the stability and efficiency of the overall network. The testing also indicates that this adaptive algorithm can predict handover targets by considering UE speed and direction and uses hysteresis mechanisms to prevent overly frequent handovers. By employing technologies such as Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and beamforming, this strategy is expected to maintain high service quality even under high mobility conditions.

This study focuses on the optimization of antireflection coatings (ARCs) to enhance the performance of silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells. SHJ solar cells face a significant challenge in achieving their theoretical efficiency limits due to light reflection at the air–cell interface. This reflection reduces photon absorption, which limits photocurrent generation and hinders the widespread adoption of SHJ technology. To address this, the optimization of ARCs using single, double, and triple-layer designs with a graded refractive index material as the active layer is investigated. The optimization process is simulated by calculating the layer thicknesses using OPAL2 software and validated through experimental deposition. The results demonstrate that a triple-layer ARC structure consisting of 80/50/95 nm of indium tin oxide (ITO), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and lithium fluoride (LiFx) significantly improves SHJ performance. This configuration leads to a 1.04 mA cm−2 increase in short-circuit current density (Jsc), reaching 39.85 mA cm−2, and an efficiency of 21.62%, compared to a single-layer ARC. This study presents a promising solution to improve SHJ solar cell efficiency by reducing reflection losses and optimizing optical properties, contributing to the advancement of SHJ technology and facilitating the development of more efficient and cost-effective photovoltaic systems for sustainable energy transition. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Grid cells in the mammalian brain are fundamental to spatial navigation, and therefore crucial to how animals perceive and interact with their environment. Traditionally, grid cells are thought support path integration through highly symmetric hexagonal lattice firing patterns. However, recent findings show that their firing patterns become distorted in the presence of significant spatial landmarks such as rewarded locations. This introduces a novel perspective of dynamic, subjective, and action-relevant interactions between spatial representations and environmental cues. Here, we propose a practical and theoretical framework to quantify and explain these interactions. To this end, we train path-integrating recurrent neural networks (piRNNs) on a spatial navigation task, whose goal is to predict the agent's position with a special focus on rewarded locations. Grid-like neurons naturally emerge from the training of piRNNs, which allows us to investigate how the two aspects of the task, space and reward, are integrated in their firing patterns. We find that geometry, but not topology, of the grid cell population code becomes distorted. Surprisingly, these distortions are global in the firing patterns of the grid cells despite local changes in the reward. Our results indicate that after training with location-specific reward information, the preserved representational topology supports successful path integration, whereas the emergent heterogeneity in individual responses due to global distortions may encode dynamically changing environmental cues. By bridging the gap between computational models and the biological reality of spatial navigation under reward information, we offer new insights into how neural systems prioritize environmental landmarks in their spatial navigation code.

This research-to-practice paper describes developing and analyzing state-of-the-art smart boots created by combining CAD technology and advanced 3D printing techniques to attract students in bio-engineering and related fields. The primary objective of this innovative immobilization boot is to expedite fracture recovery phases through an ergonomic design to ensure optimal patient comfort during its use. Technological solutions are crucial in aiding the rehabilitation process for fractures caused by falls, heavy lifting, or rotational trauma. However, cost and comfort-related issues persist, underscoring the need for alternative approaches. This research addresses these challenges and delves into the broader implications of fracture treatment, catalyzing future projects and investigations in bioengineering. Additionally, this study serves as an educational tool that sparks the interest of high school and engineering students, promoting multidisciplinary collaboration in innovation. By involving students in specialized courses covering 3D design, human bone anatomy, biology, and materials science, this initiative empowers them to deepen their knowledge and develop new technologies to address bone injury problems. Material analyses include evaluating the type of material depending on the fracture site, such as PLA for printing and cotton and silicone gel for the midsection between the splint and the body. This research aims to advance our understanding of the type of fracture, the methods associated with their treatment, and tissue repair processes during bone callus formation. To summarize, this multidisciplinary approach drives advancements in bio-engineering and related fields, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and inspire students to pursue further research in bio-engineering and related fields. The characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is formulated and implemented for the hydrodynamic volume integral equation (HDVIE) that is used to mathematically model electromagnetic field interactions and conduction current dynamics on nanoantennas and nanoscatterers. The proposed method produces excitation-independent characteristic hydrodynamic currents and the corresponding modal significance curves, providing useful information that can be used to optimize the performance of a nanoantenna. Numerical results demonstrate the reliability and the applicability of the proposed approach.

Optimized Transmission Strategy for UAV-RIS 2.0 Assisted Communications Using Rate Splitting Multiple Access

In this paper, we study the transmission strategy of a ground-based beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS), a.k.a RIS 2.0, in a network where multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) simultaneously transmit signals to the respective groups of users. It is assumed that each group is assigned subcarriers orthogonal to those assigned to other groups and rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is adopted within each group. A corresponding mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) is formulated, which aims to jointly optimize 1) allocation of BD-RIS elements to groups, 2) BD-RIS phase rotations, 3) rate allocation in RSMA, and 4) precoders. To solve the problem, we propose using generalized benders decomposition (GBD) augmented with a manifold-based algorithm. GBD splits the MINLP problem into two sub-problems, namely the primal and the relaxed master problem, which are solved alternately and iteratively. In the primal problem, we apply block coordinate descent (BCD) to manage the coupling of variables effectively. Moreover, we recognize the manifold structure in the phase rotation constraint of BD-RIS, enabling the Riemannian conjugate gradient (RCG). Early recognition of clinical deterioration (CD) has vital importance in patients’ survival from exacerbation or death. Electronic health records (EHRs) data have been widely employed in Early Warning Scores (EWS) to measure CD risk in hospitalized patients. Recently, EHRs data have been utilized in Machine Learning (ML) models to predict mortality and CD. The ML models have shown superior performance in CD prediction compared to EWS. Since EHRs data are structured and tabular, conventional ML models are generally applied to them, and less effort is put into evaluating the artificial neural network’s performance on EHRs data. Thus, in this article, an extremely boosted neural network (XBNet) is used to predict CD, and its performance is compared to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. For this purpose, 103,105 samples from thirteen Brazilian hospitals are used to generate the models. Moreover, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to verify whether it can improve the adopted models’ performance. The performance of ML models and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), an EWS candidate, are evaluated in CD prediction regarding the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and geometric mean (G-mean) metrics in a 10-fold cross-validation approach. This paper presents a programming system for a robot manipulator using a hand-held demonstration tool. In this system, a user holds the self-designed tool to demonstrate a desired motion path, and the robot arm replicates the learned trajectory. The path-demonstration tool, including optical tags (OT) and an IMU, is designed to collect trajectory data from hand motion. Sensor data fusion allows the system to track accurately the demonstrated trajectory. A calibration procedure is proposed to transform the trajectory from tool’s coordinate system to robot’s coordinate system. A cubic spline-based trajectory planning method is proposed to ensure smooth reproduction of the learned trajectory in both time and space. Experimental results show that the robot is able to replicate squared and curved trajectories collected from the path-demonstration tool. The average position error is within 2.435 mm in XYZ directions and the average orientation error is within 0.65 degrees.

An intelligent and self-sufficient robot is essential across a wide range of fields, including transportation, industry, space exploration, and defense. Mobile robots possess the capability to undertake diverse tasks such as handling materials, aiding in disaster scenarios, conducting patrols, and executing rescue operations. As a result, the development of an autonomous robot that can navigate through both unchanging and ever-changing surroundings has become important. The primary objective of mobile robot navigation revolves around ensuring the seamless and secure traversal of the robot through complex environments, starting from an initial position, and reaching a designated goal position. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Jetson Nano powered robot car which uses local sensors to interact with an unknown environment. Object following, obstacle avoidance, and wall following features are built for the car to navigate to reach its desired destinations.
