This article proposes a second-order generalized inte-grator phase-locked loop (SOGI PLL) based on $H_{\infty}$ control theory framework. The control problem is formulated in the context of the PLL's voltage-controlled oscillator while considering dynamics of the SOGI block. By specifying the weighting function as a function of PLL settling time in the H8 control problem, an optimal controller is obtained to achieve robustness in the PLL's tracking performances. Furthermore, reduction in the controller's implementation and computational cost without loss in performance are achieved by means of Hankel singular value approximation. Experimental results show that proposed SOGI PLL is able to robustly estimate the frequency and phase angle of a single-phase voltage compared to its standard SOGI PLL counterpart. © 2024 IEEE.

The advantages of confocal microscopy over widefield microscopy are their ability to produce optically sectioned images and their ability to produce multi-color imaging in which different organelles within the biological specimen are stained using multiple dyes, enabling colocalization studies. These features make confocal microscopy a widely used tool to provide valuable morphological and functional information within cells and tissues. One of the major drawbacks of confocal microscopy is its limited spatial resolution. Here, we train two generative adversarial networks using paired and unpaired data of low- and high-resolution images to improve the spatial resolution in confocal microscopy. © 2023 SPIE. Positioning remains a crucial aspect with wide-ranging applications, despite the availability of various solutions and extensive research. The lack of transparency surrounding the infrastructure topology and precise locations of base stations operated by telecommunication companies further complicates the positioning process. Moreover, as wireless networks continue to evolve with advancements like 5G and 6G, accurate positioning becomes increasingly important, leveraging vast amounts of data and artificial intelligence techniques. This paper proposes a Deep Neural Network (DNN) based approach called DSP for accurately determining the position of telecommunication operator serving cells in outdoor spaces. The proposed method incorporates fingerprint data collection, machine learning algorithms, and big data analysis to enhance accuracy and expand the range of evaluatable parameters. The data was collected and labeled using the drive test method. By employing deep learning techniques, the proposed method successfully predicts the location of the base station connected to the user device. Through effective data preprocessing and optimized hyperparameters, the average distance error was reduced to 20 meters. © 2023 IEEE.

Algorithm and VLSI Architecture of a Near-Optimum Symbol Detector for QSM MIMO Systems

Driven by the rapidly growing demand for high quality of service (QoS) in wireless communications, quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies have received intensive research attention. In this paper, a multiplier-free and divider-free detection algorithm and a corresponding hardware architecture are presented. The proposed algorithm has four steps: 1) applying COordinate Rotation DIgital computer (CORDIC)-based Givens rotations to QR decompose the fading channel matrices, 2) mapping the transmitted M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) symbols to the binary phase shift keying (BPSK)-modulated bits, 3) symbol slicing to estimate the transmitted symbols for all transmit antenna combinations (TACs), and 4) measuring the likelihood distances and finding the final solution. Based on hardware considerations for high-speed processing, no multipliers or dividers are used in the four corresponding hardware modules. Finally, computer simulations and hardware implementation are conducted for a configuration with four transmit antennas, two active transmit antennas, and four receive antennas. According to the simulation results, the proposed algorithm performs almost as well as the optimal method but has a lower computational complexity. Furthermore, according to the hardware implementation results, the proposed architecture needs 547k gates (kGEs), has a preprocessing latency of 64 clock cycles, provides a throughput rate of 1 Gbps and has a hardware efficiency of 1.83 (Mbps/kGEs) when operating at a frequency of 500 MHz. The above results also show that even for fast fading channels, the proposed detector is still a promising candidate for providing a high throughput rate and an acceptable bit error rate (BER). © 2013 IEEE.

The increase of fraudsters and fraud attacks on the communication network plays a major role in the loss of revenue, network abuse, and degradation of services. Communication and cloud networks belong to separate companies and consist of handover points from one network to another. The scope is to bring communication and cloud networks closer and understand network traffic profiles using the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) concept. The SDN controller will serve to route the extracted tapped data to a central server instead of making use of the live network to route traffic. To apply policies to the traffic and identify which user traffic is a fraud case, and further to send a block signal to the network charging element on the communication network. The flow process will be automated, and to protect the network from fraud attacks, using the SDN controller in a seamless manner and maintaining the performance of the network, The journal article explores traditional fraud detection techniques and will define a new framework for communication and cloud providers to enable the detection and blocking of fraud. The research solution will propose three network architectures for the identification of fraud and integration within communication and cloud networks. The aim of the study is to perform real-time data classification, reporting of fraudulent subscribers, applications, and protocols;real-time analytics, and real-time blocking of data that is classified as fraudulent activity within the mobile data network. The main purpose is to achieve a higher energy/service fraud detection rate than similar work in the field, to provide a solution that integrates within the traditional network, and to further block fraud within the network. © 2025 the Author(s).

Purpose of Review: Even with increasing electricity access rates, electricity consumption remains low in Sub-Saharan Africa. To remedy this, policies and strategies to stimulate electricity demand are increasingly critical to ensure socio-economic development in the region. This review summarizes approaches to stimulating electricity demand in different sectors of the economy and highlights key policy considerations to make the electricity sector commercially viable and sustainable in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recent Findings: Recent demand stimulation strategies include facilitating the growth of existing electricity consumption among residential and commercial customers through appliance financing, and tariff subsidy programs, replacing existing non-electric productive energy uses such as irrigation and agro-processing in the agricultural sector, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and electric cooking technologies, and establishing new electricity-based enterprises in different sectors of the economy. Summary: While current demand stimulation strategies have promising socio-economic benefits, their commercial viability and sustainability hinge on key policy considerations that address fundamental gaps, calling for further research in this area. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents a novel approach to designing a smart grid testbed, that advances the state of knowledge on power system resilience analysis by including the social aspects of the community in simulation. The proposed Community-based Power Simulation virtual testbed, termed ComPSim herein, integrates non-physical dimensions of the community into the smart grid infrastructure system. The ComPSim test bed can be applied to identify the social impacts of power system disruptions. The testbed takes into account diverse socioeconomic characteristics of the community, enabling targeted analysis and policy formulation. This research highlights the need for integrating community's social and economic facet into future infrastructure planning and decision efforts. © 2023 IEEE.

Digital Holographic microscopy (DHM), which provides quantitative phase imaging (QPI), has been widely applied in material and biological applications. The performance of DHM technologies relies heavily on computational reconstruction methods to provide accurate phase measurements. For example, non-telecentric DHM systems should compensate for the spherical wavefront associated with a non-telecentric configuration. The size of the ±1 diffraction orders in the hologram spectrum depends inversely on the radius of the curvature of the spherical wavefront introduced by the non-telecentric DHM system. Therefore, one can estimate the radius of curvature of the spherical wavefront by analyzing the hologram spectrum. Here, we outline the steps for the automatic reconstruction of phase images without distortions and with minimum user input from a hologram recorded in a non-telecentric DHM system. The proposed reconstruction approach can be divided into six main steps. The first step automatically selects the +1 diffraction order in the hologram spectrum. Secondly, the spherical wavefront parameters and the interference angle are estimated by analyzing the size and position of the selected +1 order. The third and fourth steps are the spatial filtering of the +1 order and the compensation of the interference angle, respectively. The next step involves the estimation of the center of the spherical wavefront. Finally, there is a fine-tuning step to optimize the estimated parameters and provide a phase image with minimum phase distortions. We have identified the relevant metrics in each step, compared multiple approaches, and selected the one with the higher performance for all our experimental holograms. © 2023 SPIE.

The increasing global energy demands highlight the need for improved energy management systems in smart buildings. Traditional systems are inadequate in resolving the dynamic interplay between energy consumption and occupant comfort due to their inability to adapt to the dynamic nature of occupancy. The main goal of this research is to use dynamic occupancy data to optimize energy consumption. This research introduces a solution that is African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) based Dynamic Occupant Adaptive Energy Management System. The adoption of AVOA resulted in a significant reduction in energy consumption, with a median consumption drop of 329.39 kWhr from a baseline of non-optimized 938.08 kWhr. More specifically, the implementation of AVOA showed an average improvement in energy gain to 0.9940, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system in improving energy efficiency while maintaining occupant comfort. This research proposes an integrated approach that balances energy efficiency with the well-being of its occupants, so contributing to the broader targets of sustainable urban development © 2024 IEEE.

Multiwavelets can be orthogonal, symmetric, smooth, and with short support, all at the same time. However, the design of multifilters with these properties remains a challenging problem. Obtaining multifilters by using matrix spectral factorization (MSF) is still quite unknown in the signal processing community. There are a number of numerical approaches to MSF, but they usually cannot handle the case when the determinant of the matrix product filter has zeros on the unit circle (i.e. singularity), which is precisely of greatest interest in the construction of multiwavelets. We describe a novel design of Alpert's multiwavelet filter using Bauer's method for MSF of a product multifilter. We apply the proposed multifilter for image denoising of gray images and compare with the orthogonal GHM and CL multifilters. © 2024 IEEE.
