The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of bathymetry predicted by the gravity-geologic method (GGM) using depth and gravity anomalies estimated using the optimized machine learning model determined from machine learning techniques around the Yamato basin in the East Sea. In this study, the optimized model using machine learning techniques was applied to estimate bathymetry using gravity-geologic method (GGM) from a tuning density contrast between seawater and the seafloor bedrock determined by downward continuation method using satellite altimetry-derived gravity anomalies. Bathymetry estimated using machine learning technique was assessed the accuracy in comparison with shipborne depth measurement obtained by the National Centers for environmental Information (NCEI, https://***), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, http://***). As a result, the GGM bathymetry predicted by the optimized machine learning model using a tuning density contrast of 13.63 g/cm3 in comparison with that using a density contrast of 1.67 g/cm3 shows the improvement of 67.40% in the RMSE at shipborne locations of the NECI. © 2023 ACRS. On 3 October 2023, a multihazard cascade in the Sikkim Himalaya, India, was triggered by 14.7 million cubic meters of frozen lateral moraine collapsing into South Lhonak Lake. The impact generated an ~20-meter tsunami-like impact wave, which breached the moraine and drained ~50 million cubic meters of the lake's water. The ensuing glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) eroded ~270 million cubic meters of sediment, which overwhelmed infrastructure, including hydropower installations along the Teesta River. The physical scale and human and economic impacts of this event prompt urgent reflection on the role of climate change and human activities in exacerbating such disasters. Insights into multihazard evolution are pivotal for informing policy development, enhancing early warning systems (EWS), and spurring paradigm shifts in GLOF risk management strategies in the Himalaya and other mountain environments.

Concerns are rising about the contamination of recreational waters from human and animal waste, along with associated risks to public health. However, existing guidelines for managing pathogens in these environments have not yet adopted risk-based pathogen-specific criteria, which are essential to improve the protection of public health. This study aimed to establish risk-based critical concentration benchmarks for significant enteric pathogens, i.e., norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia lamblia, Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Escherichia coli O157:H7. Applying a 0.036 risk benchmark to both marine and freshwater environments, the study identified the lowest critical concentrations for children, who are the most susceptible group. Norovirus, E. coli O157:H7, and Cryptosporidium presented lowest critical concentrations for virus, bacteria, and protozoa, respectively: 0.60 GC, 98.96 CFU, and 2.71 viable oocysts per 100 mL in freshwater for children. These values were then used to determine minimum sample volumes corresponding to different recovery rates for culture method, digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) and quantitative PCR (qPCR) methods. The results indicate that for children, norovirus required the largest sample volumes (5th percentile between 6.58 to 227.27 L, depending on water type and detection method), reflecting its low critical concentration and high potential for causing illness. In contrast, adenovirus and rotavirus required significantly smaller volumes (approximately 0.24 to 1.5 L), as did the bacteria and protozoa studied (200–300 mL and 3–3.5 L, respectively), based on a 10% recovery rate. Additionally, the presented risk-based framework could provide a model for establishing pathogen thresholds, potentially guiding the creation of extensive risk-based criteria for various pathogens in recreational waters, thus aiding public health authorities in decision-making, strengthening pathogen monitoring, and imp

This paper proposes an optimization framework for sustainable post-disaster building reconstruction. Based on mathematical optimization, it is intended to provide decision makers with a versatile tool to optimize building designs and to explore the trade-off between costs and environmental impact (represented by embodied energy) of alternative building materials. The mixed-integer nonlinear optimization model includes an analytical building model that considers structural and safety constraints and incorporates regional building codes. Using multi-objective optimization concepts, Pareto-optimal designs are computed that represent the best trade-off designs from which a decision maker can choose when they take additional criteria into consideration. As a case study, we consider the design of a multi-room one-story masonry building in Nepal. We demonstrate how the framework can be employed to address a variety of questions, such as the optimal building design and material selection, the sensitivity of the decision to material prices, and the impact of regional safety regulation thresholds. © 2021, CC BY.

In petrochemistry, dicumyl peroxide (DCPO) is used in various resins for improving physical properties, which was produced by cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) with oxidization reaction, redox reaction, and dehydration reaction. The reactant, CHP, is a typical organic hydroperoxide and has been intrinsically unstable and reactive due to its bivalent -O-O- structure which can be broken readily with bond-dissociation energy. This sequence on sensitive study aimed at the thermal hazard evaluation for the reactive and incompatible characteristics of CHP mixed with various inorganic alkaline solutions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vent sizing package 2 (VSP2) were used to analyze the thermal hazards and runaway reaction of redox system, such as decomposition of CHP in cumene solution and CHP react with inorganic alkaline solutions, exothermic onset temperature, peak power, heat of decomposition of dynamic scanning tests, adiabatic self-heating rate, pressure rise rate, maximum temperature, maximum pressure of reaction system, etc. The results of the tests have proven helpful in establishing safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal guidelines. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

This study concentrates on the response, data sending, and survey completion rates of a smartphone-based travel survey in a developing country. A smartphone-based survey reinforced by a web-based survey was conducted in 2015 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The aims of this study are: 1) to explore the effects of age and gender on the response rate of the smartphone-based travel survey, and 2) to examine how gender, age, smartphone ownership history, and occupation influence the data sending and completion rates of the smartphone-based travel survey. The results show that gender had no effects on the response rate, while age had a significant impact. In addition, gender had effect on data sending rate, and the respondents who owned smartphones for longer time were more likely to complete the survey successfully. Furthermore, the survey withdraw rate of respondents was higher on weekends in comparison to weekdays.

Social-Ecological Vulnerability and Livelihood Improvement Strategies of Landslide Victims in Pattalikang Village, Gowa Regency in National Security Perspective

Landslides are caused by natural environmental factors and cultural, environmental factors, such as changes in land use and social conditions. In the event of a landslide disaster in Pattalikang Village, the community had to start over from scratch and improve their livelihoods. This study aims to analyze: (1) the social-ecological vulnerability of landslide in Pattalikang Village; (2) disaster mitigation efforts for the people of Pattalikang Village after landslides; and (3) Strategies for improving the livelihoods of the people of Pattalikang Village after landslides from a national security perspective. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical methods. Respondents are from the Pattalikang Village community and representatives from the head of Pattalikang village, the Regional disaster management Agency, the Social Service, the Agricultural Service, the Public Works and Housing Agency, and Tagana Gowa Regency. The results showed that: (1) The socio-ecological vulnerability in Pattalikang Village was categorized as vulnerable based on the scoring and weighting of socio-ecological vulnerability factors; (2) Mitigation efforts carried out were planting vetiver in every landslide-prone point and training of disaster risk reduction for community; (3) The strategy used by the communities who are victims of landslides is consolidation and survival strategy as the strength point to rebuild the communities and improving livelihoods after disaster.

This research analyzed the levels of disaster risk in the Citeureup sub-District, Bogor Regency, West Java, based on its potential hazard, vulnerability and capacity, using map to represent the results, then Miles and Huberman analytical techniques was used to analyze the qualitative interviews. The analysis conducted in this study is based on the concept of disaster risk by Wisner. The result shows that the Citeureup sub-District has medium-low risk of landslides. Of the 14 villages, three villages have a moderate risk level, namely Hambalang, Tajur, and Tangkil, or 49.58% of the total land area. Eleven villages have a low level of risk, namely Pasir Mukti, Sanja, Tarikolot, Gunung Sari, Puspasari, East Karang Asem, Citeureup, Leuwinutug, Sukahati, West Karang Asem West and Puspanegara, or 48.68% of the total land area, for high-risk areas only around 1.74%, which is part of Hambalang village. The analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) prove that areas with a high risk potential does not necessarily have a high level of risk. The capacity of the community plays an important role to minimize the risk of a region. disaster risk reduction strategy is done by creating a safe condition, which intensified the movement of disaster risk reduction.

The mandatory carbon reduction guidelines and regulations in Indonesia encourage all industrial sectors particularly the petroleum industry to implement decarbonization programs by systematically reducing carbon emissions as part of climate action. Unlike existing carbon emission studies in the petroleum industry, the literature lacks studies on the decarbonization patterns. In addition, the effectiveness of carbon mitigation in the upstream oil and gas field has not been studied so far. This study developed short panel data models to understand the current decarbonization efforts and patterns during 2015–2018. The results indicate that the considered variables are significantly impactful in carbon reduction with different coefficient patterns. It is suggested to associate decarbonization with oil and gas production and highlight energy efficiency optimization to stabilize production. The impact of financial, human, and administrative resources on the supporting facility is critical for executing sustainable carbon mitigation projects. © 2024 The Authors
