We study the voltage control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in an ultrathin Fe layer sandwiched between the Cr buffer and MgO tunneling barrier layers. A high-interface magnetic anisotropy energy of 2.1 mJ/m2 is achieved in the Cr/ultrathin Fe/MgO structure. A large voltage-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy change is observed under the negative-bias voltage applications for the case of the Fe layer thinner than 0.6 nm. The amplitude of the voltage-induced anisotropy energy change exhibits a strong Fe-thickness dependence and it reaches as high as 290 fJ/Vm. The observed high values of the surface anisotropy and voltage-induced anisotropy energy change demonstrate the feasibility of voltage-driven spintronic devices.

In this tutorial presentation we focus on the construction of Lyapunov or storage functions for large-scale networked control systems (NCSs) in which sensors, controllers and actuators are connected via multiple (local) communication networks which operate asynchronously and independently of each other. Within each packet-based communication network only one node can communicate at a given transmission time (requiring communication protocols) and the transmission intervals and delays may vary over time. These artefacts cause network-induced communication errors in the overal closed-loop system and can be detrimental for stability and performance. For these NCSs we provide explicit constructions of Lyapunov functions by modelling the large-scale NCS as an interconnection of a finite or even an infinite number of hybrid subsystems, and combining 'local' Lyapunov functions for the controlled dynamics (including network-induced errors) and the protocols in a systematic manner. These constructions lead to the numerical computation of maximum allowable transmission intervals (MATIs) and maximum allowable delays (MADs) for each of the individual networks. The availability of the Lyapunov or storage functions guarantee properties such as global asymptotic or exponential stability, input-to-state stability (ISS) and, L_p-stability for the large-scale NCS. Interestingly, the control performance expressed in terms of ISS and L_p-gains can be traded with the network parameters (MATIs and MADs). Hence, tradeoffs can be made between the quality-of-control of the overal hybrid system and the required quality-of-service of the underlying communication infrastructure. Also event-triggered communication schemes will be shortly discussed. The results are illustrated with an example of vehicle platooning.

Although the storage capacity is rapidly increasing, the size of datasets is also ever-growing, especially for those workflows in HPC that perform the parameter sweep studies. Consequently, the deadlock caused by the storage competition between concurrent workflow instances is still a major pragmatic concern and storage management remains important for high performance and throughput computing. In practice, there are various ways to this issue, ranging from admission control to deadlock resolution. Despite being a simple solution, the admission control is conservative and not space efficient to storage utilization. Therefore, in this paper, we study the performance of the deadlock resolution approach by proposing a resource allocation algorithm which is performance resilient to the workflows characterized by different features. The algorithm is designed based on our previous result, called DDS, which takes advantages of the dataflow information of the workflow to resolve deadlock based on detection&recovery principle. We improve DDS to allow it to not only resolve the deadlock but also overcome the performance anomaly, a not yet investigated problem in our previous studies. We thus called the improved algorithm performance-resilience algorithm, denoted as DDS+. The studies in this paper can be viewed as a follow-up research on DDS and show the performance behavior of the improved algorithm in various conditions. Therefore, the results in this paper are more useful to adapt DDS+ to the workflows with different characteristics in reality while keeping the performance stable. Copyright © 2015 ACM.

Because of individual work efficiency affecting the whole airport working efficiency, it's very important that how to evaluate the individual work efficiency scientifically. In this paper, by analyzing the working characteristics and environment of civil aviation airport staff, a hierarchical fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model is introduced. For the complexity and variability of the working environment of airport, a composition operator adjusting the parameter's weight is proposed to enhance the flexibility of the evaluation model. In the fuzzy evaluation matrix selection stage, in order to structure a more scientific and objective evaluation matrix, the random sampling method is brought in to assess the relevant data about the evaluation target. By analyzing the airport's work records in 2015, the parameter weights are calculated, and the improved model is applied to the staff work performance evaluation in the first half of 2016. Good result is achieved, i.e., the whole work efficiency of airport had been increased by more than 10% compared to the same period last year.

Wearable and handheld devices, such smart phones, have come a long way in a very short time as they are capable of providing an extremely vast number of services simply at the click of a button, or even automatically. The diversity of the different embedded sensors (accelerometer, light sensors, etc.) lay the required foundation for the emergence of specialized applications that are capable of serving all kinds of purposes. By taking advantage of this specialized hardware found in smart phones, not only it has become feasible to constantly sense and gather information from the device's environment, but it has also become an effortless task to transmit the collected data to any individual or organization in a plethora of forms. This paper serves as an evaluation method for a location based Android application, SeniorTracker, by presenting a comparison between two applications that are both used for tracking down a device. While both have quite a similar purpose, the way they go about it as well as the ways the application itself can be utilized, drastically differs. SeniorTracker's main purpose lies in the retrieval of the coordinates of a device in case it is located somewhere it is not expected to be, allowing monitoring of persons that potentially will be lost, otherwise. The comparison was mainly focused on the performance of both applications when it comes to location retrieval and energy consumption while keeping in mind the respective tasks that each of them were designed to fulfill.

KAGRA is a 3-km interferometric gravitational wave telescope located in the Kamioka mine in Japan. It is the first km-class gravitational wave telescope constructed underground to reduce seismic noise, and the first km-class telescope to use cryogenic cooling of test masses to reduce thermal noise. The construction of the infrastructure to house the interferometer in the tunnel, and the initial phase operation of the interferometer with a simple 3-km Michelson configuration have been completed. The first cryogenic operation is expected in 2018, and the observing runs with a full interferometer are expected in 2020s. Programming of sequential control systems using functional block diagram language

The paper deals with the methodology of creation of sequential control system programs in the language of function block diagrams (FBD). After analyzing basic blocks of the sequential functions chart (SFC) language, the form of state block and implementation of branching or connecting paths of sequences are formulated using the FBD language. It is a simplification of the application of the SFC language. Our method of creating the sequential system ensures a compact form of the final program and is particularly useful for small PLC controllers. The method is illustrated by example of the simple sequential control system.

Exponential stability assignment of inverse LQ regulator for neutral systems with time-varying delay

In this paper, we propose a design method of an inverse LQ regulator for neutral systems with a time-varying delay, in which the resulting system is assured to have a pre-assigned degree of exponential stability. Using this method, the closed-loop system is asymptotically stabilized and a feedback law constructed easily is the optimal control minimizing a class of a cost functional without relation to the exponential stability assignment. In addition, the regulator promises to have a good robust stability as same as ordinary finite dimensional LQ regulators, even when a static nonlinear or a dynamic linear perturbation is inserted in the control input. Finally, the method is demonstrated by numerical examples with and without the exponential stability assignment. In the simulation, it is shown that the proposed method allows designers to seek more fast closed-loop responses by selecting two scalar parameters and the degree of exponential stability in a condition given by LMIs. © 2016 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
