This paper develops a novel robotic joint mechanism by means of twisting a small-diameter round-belt, which enables slow movements of joint rotation unlike direct-drive actuator mechanisms. The actuator mechanism proposed in this manuscript is composed of two small-diameter round-belts located near the joint with opposite configurations. The two round-belts are twisted by DC motors placed on a motor stage, which can be activated by a step motor. This novel mechanism realizes movement of the robotic joint around its axis due to contraction forces generated by twisting both round-belts. That is, these round-belts act as agonist and antagonist actuators for the robotic joint, which give a human-like compliance to the rotational motion of the joint. Experimental results using the proposed one-link robot show that a high position resolution of the joint control can be achieved by increases and decreases in the amount of twisting. In addition, we clearly indicate a linear relationship between twisting and the joint angle of the robot. Finally, this paper reveals that the antagonistic twist-actuator system has a secondary role as a gear reducer that is capable of largely decreasing the velocity of joint movement.

Population stratification is a useful approach for a better understanding of complex biological problems in human health and wellbeing. The proposal that such stratification applies to the human gut microbiome, in the form of distinct community composition types termed enterotypes, has been met with both excitement and controversy. In view of accumulated data and re-analyses since the original work, we revisit the concept of enterotypes, discuss different methods of dividing up the landscape of possible microbiome configurations, and put these concepts into functional, ecological and medical contexts. As enterotypes are of use in describing the gut microbial community landscape and may become relevant in clinical practice, we aim to reconcile differing views and encourage a balanced application of the concept.

Transcriptomic imputation approaches combine eQTL reference panels with large-scale genotype data in order to test associations between disease and gene expression. These genic associations could elucidate signals in complex genome-wide association study (GWAS) loci and may disentangle the role of different tissues in disease development. We used the largest eQTL reference panel for the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to create a set of gene expression predictors and demonstrate their utility. We applied DLPFC and 12 GTEx-brain predictors to 40,299 schizophrenia cases and 65,264 matched controls for a large transcriptomic imputation study of schizophrenia. We identified 413 genic associations across 13 brain regions. Stepwise conditioning identified 67 non-MHC genes, of which 14 did not fall within previous GWAS loci. We identified 36 significantly enriched pathways, including hexosaminidase-A deficiency, and multiple porphyric disorder pathways. We investigated developmental expression patterns among the 67 non-MHC genes and identified specific groups of pre- and postnatal expression.

Upon extensive studies, text clustering remains a critical challenge in data mining community. Even by various techniques proposed to overcome some of these challenges, there still exist problems when dealing with weakly related or even noisy features. In response to this, we propose a Dlssemble-ASsemble (DIAS) framework for text clustering. DIAS employs simple random feature sampling to disassemble high-dimensional text data and gains diverse structural knowledge. This also does good to avoiding the bulk of noisy features. Then the multi-view knowledge is assembled by weighted Information-theoretic Consensus Clustering (IC-C) in order to gain a high-quality consensus partitioning. Extensive experiments on eight real-world text data sets demonstrate the advantages of DIAS over other widely used methods. In particular, DIAS shows strengths in learning from very weak basic partitionings. In addition, it is the natural suitability to distributed computing that makes DIAS become a promising candidate for big text clustering. Copyright © SIAM.

Informal and semi-formal specifications are commonly adopted for requirements engineering (RE), especially for customer-oriented system development projects, but their validity with respect to the user's requirements is usually difficult to perform. The common reason for the difficulty is that the specifications are often misinterpreted by the stakeholders due to the ambiguity of the natural language or graphical notation used in writing the specifications. This paper describes a tool to assist the animation of informal and semi-formal specifications intuitively and comprehensively for their validation. The underlying animation principle is called SOFL Requirements Specification Animation Framework (SOFL-RSAF). The framework integrates specification animation into the SOFL method for constructing specifications and is supported by a prototype add-in tool.

This paper presents a Multihop Routing Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks (MBEEC) based on the Dijkstra Algorithm. An important challenge in wireless sensor networks is to balance the energy consumption. The Bio-Inspired Algorithm for Energy Efficient Routing for Continuous Data Dissemination Networks Wireless Sensor (BEE-C) can provide important savings on energy consumption but does not provide routing calculations that ensures a long lived topology. Lifetime is an extremely important factor in a Wireless Sensor Network, because of the difficulty of maintenance, limited battery, memory and processing that sensors have. MBEEC inherits the properties of BEE-C but uses Dijkstra Algorithm for calculating the routes. To ensure the longer lifetime of the network, MBEEC addresses a multihop algorithm in terms of consumption in a matter more energy efficient than BEE-C using Dijkstra to calculate routes, thus balancing the entire network. © 2015 IEEE.

Precise knowledge of solar radiation is indeed essential in different technological and scientific applications of solar energy. Temperature-based estimation of global solar radiation would be appealing owing to broad availability of measured air temperatures. In this study, the potentials of soft computing techniques are evaluated to estimate daily horizontal global solar radiation (DHGSR) from measured maximum, minimum, and average air temperatures (T max, T min, and T avg) in an Iranian city. For this purpose, a comparative evaluation between three methodologies of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), radial basis function support vector regression (SVR-rbf), and polynomial basis function support vector regression (SVR-poly) is performed. Five combinations of T max, T min, and T avg are served as inputs to develop ANFIS, SVR-rbf, and SVR-poly models. The attained results show that all ANFIS, SVR-rbf, and SVR-poly models provide favorable accuracy. Based upon all techniques, the higher accuracies are achieved by models (5) using T max–T min and T max as inputs. According to the statistical results, SVR-rbf outperforms SVR-poly and ANFIS. For SVR-rbf (5), the mean absolute bias error, root mean square error, and correlation coefficient are 1.1931 MJ/m2, 2.0716 MJ/m2, and 0.9380, respectively. The survey results approve that SVR-rbf can be used efficiently to estimate DHGSR from air temperatures.

Home and building automation systems (HBAS) today are categorized by plethora of data formats, communication platforms and software services accessible via heterogeneous embedded devices. These heterogeneous embedded devices characterized a building into a data intensive entity, generating numerous data and complex control information, brings a much heavy load to the HBAS. Consequently, this leads to interoperation difficulties among those devices for information exchange and operation management. In this paper, a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based framework that leveraged by services is proposed to manage HBAS efficiently by reducing their workload during joint execution of tasks. The proposed framework consists of several layers dedicated for services interwoven by Event-Condition-Action (ECA) oriented decision mechanism for managing heterogeneous embedded devices. The proposed framework is viable and highly efficient to be deployed for HBAS with limited computing resources. © 2014 SERSC.

The availability of accurate solar radiation data is essential for designing as well as simulating the solar energy systems. In this study, by employing the long-term daily measured solar data, a neural network auto-regressive model with exogenous inputs (NN-ARX) is applied to predict daily horizontal global solar radiation using day of the year as the sole input. The prime aim is to provide a convenient and precise way for rapid daily global solar radiation prediction, for the stations and their immediate surroundings with such an observation, without utilizing any meteorological-based inputs. To fulfill this, seven Iranian cities with different geographical locations and solar radiation characteristics are considered as case studies. The performance of NN-ARX is compared against the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The achieved results prove that day of the year-based prediction of daily global solar radiation by both NN-ARX and ANFIS models would be highly feasible owing to the accurate predictions attained. Nevertheless, the statistical analysis indicates the superiority of NN-ARX over ANFIS. In fact, the NN-ARX model represents high potential to follow the measured data favorably for all cities. For the considered cities, the attained statistical indicators of mean absolute bias error, root mean square error, and coefficient of determination for the NN-ARX models are in the ranges of 0.44–0.61 kWh/m2, 0.50–0.71 kWh/m2, and 0.78–0.91, respectively.
