In the realm of forensic science, precise identification of individuals holds paramount importance in both investigative procedures and legal proceedings. Hands and palms recognition has emerged as a valuable biometric modality within forensic applications, owing to the distinct and intricate features inherent to these anatomical regions. The elaborate patterns of veins, creases, and ridges present on palms and fingers serve as rich sources of biometric data, crucial for accurate identification purposes. Furthermore, given the frequent involvement of hands and palms in criminal activities such as theft and assault, their recognition becomes imperative for establishing links between suspects and crime scenes. However, developing robust recognition systems tailored for forensic applications poses notable challenges, including variations in hand poses, lighting conditions, and image quality. To address these hurdles, sophisticated deep learning techniques, notably transfer learning, have been employed. By harnessing pre-trained deep learning models namely NasNetLarge, NasNetMobile, and EfficientNet, initially trained on expansive datasets for general image recognition tasks, we can adapt these models to the specific task of hands and palms recognition in forensic contexts. Our findings reveal that all three models consistently achieved over 92% accuracy across all metrics evaluated, demonstrating their efficacy as strong contenders for the hands-and-palms recognition task. Notably, the EfficientNet model exhibited superior performance compared to its counterparts, boasting more than 95.8% accuracy, precision, F1-score and recall, along with more than 98.6% specificity and 99.4% AUC. © 2024 IOS Press. In this article, we introduce a publicly available real-world dataset collected during the Aegean Ro-Boat Race 2023, which took place at the University of the Aegean in Syros, Greece. The Aegean Ro-Boat Race represents an international competition at the university level, challenging teams to innovate and develop autonomous marine robotic systems capable of performing in unknown dynamic maritime environments under real-world conditions. The 2023 competition featured three primary mission tasks, each designed to test different aspects of the robotic systems: 1) high-speed performance for evaluating the speed and agility of the autonomous vessels; 2) collision avoidance for assessing the systems’ ability to detect and avoid obstacles in real-time; and 3) endurance for testing the operational longevity and efficiency of the robotic systems over extended periods. In total, seven teams registered for the competition, with five of them being from Greece and two from the countries of Portugal and Latvia. Due to several technical difficulties, three vessels were able to complete all races, and data were recorded during their entire participation. The spatiotemporal data for the “Aegean Ro-Boat Race” was gathered through an onboard data logging system that continuously monitored various sensors, including global positioning system (GPS), for all vessels during the entire competition. The dataset includes positional reports from the vessels during all three races (totaling over 6500 records), the positions of the external track and obstacle buoys, together with a file regarding the weather conditions during the race day. In the era of informatics, the effectiveness of machine learning models is compromised due to the challenge of dimensionality in the data. The presence of redundant and irrelevant features significantly increases computational complexity, posing a central obstacle in the extraction of valuable insights from the extensive dataset. Any machine learning model’s performance suffers because of the issue of the plague of dimensionality. To improve the classifier’s performance, feature selection is applied beforehand on applying the machine learning model. Feature selection is accomplished using Enhanced Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (E-BPSO) with the aid of boosting the performance of the K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) classifier and is experimented on benchmarking real-world datasets. The conventional BPSO suffers from the problem of exploration which leads to premature convergence. In order to overcome the drawbacks of conventional BPSO, E-BPSO is proposed. The enhancement is made by integrating the self-adaptive velocity to drive the particle with the aid to balance exploration and exploitation. The performance of the proposed E-BPSO is evaluated against the traditional binary particle swarm optimization algorithm and genetic algorithm, considering metrics like accuracy, fitness, root mean square error, and dimensionality reduction ratio. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

This paper proposes a measurement technique for an integrated complex filter. The proposed method is based on two measurement methods with integrated circuitry for calibration. It is accomplished by applying square waves to an FUT (Filter Under Test) instead of sinusoidal waves or by superposing transfer characteristics obtained by applying a single sinusoidal wave to an FUT. In both of the above methods, the output signal connected to the external measurement equipment via a 50 Ω coaxial cable and so on. In this case, the output signal of the FUT should be amplified by internal or external amplifiers, which degrades the response. However, it is cancelled out by the proposed calibration circuitry with some analog switches. In addition to the above, for the RC polyphase filter, the source resistance and the load capacitance degrade the measurement results and their effect is discussed. The validity of the proposal is confirmed through computer simulation for a third-order RCPF whose passband is 8–40 MHz fabricated by Phenitec 0.6 µm CMOS process. It is shown that the measurement error is −1.10 dB for the square-wave method and −1.00 dB and −0.43 degrees for the superposition method at 40 MHz. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

In this paper, we propose a new pseudorandom bit sequence generator, which is based on a method digging out walls. Although each of these sequences lacks enough randomness, synthesized sequences of them can pass all of the NIST statistical test suite. We also describe a conjectural relation between the number of types on the square mazes and their sizes. © 2023 IEEE.
