An increasing number of enterprises deploy their business applications in green data centers (GDCs) to address irregular and drastic natures in task arrival of global users. GDCs aim to schedule tasks in the most cost-effective way, and achieve the profit maximization by increasing green energy usage and reducing brown one. However, prices of power grid, revenue, solar and wind energy vary dynamically within tasks’ delay constraints, and this brings a high challenge to maximize the profit of GDCs such that their delay constraints are strictly met. Different from existing studies, a Temporal-variation-aware Profit-maximized Task Scheduling (TPTS) algorithm is proposed to consider dynamic differences, and intelligently schedule all tasks to GDCs within their delay constraints. In each interval, TPTS solves a constrained profit maximization problem by a novel Simulated-annealing-based Chaotic Particle swarm optimization (SCP). Compared to several state-of-the-art scheduling algorithms, TPTS significantly increases throughput and profit while strictly meeting tasks’ delay constraints. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Resource management in computing is a very challenging problem that involves making sequential decisions. Resource limitations, resource heterogeneity, dynamic and diverse nature of workload, and the unpredictability of fog/edge computing environments have made resource management even more challenging to be considered in the fog landscape. Recently Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) based solutions are adopted to solve this problem. AI/ML methods with the capability to make sequential decisions like reinforcement learning seem most promising for these type of problems. But these algorithms come with their own challenges such as high variance, explainability, and online training. The continuously changing fog/edge environment dynamics require solutions that learn online, adopting changing computing environment. In this paper, we used standard review methodology to conduct this Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to analyze the role of AI/ML algorithms and the challenges in the applicability of these algorithms for resource management in fog/edge computing environments. Further, various machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning techniques for edge AI management have been discussed. Furthermore, we have presented the background and current status of AI/ML-based Fog/Edge Computing. Moreover, a taxonomy of AI/ML-based resource management techniques for fog/edge computing has been proposed and compared the existing techniques based on the proposed taxonomy. Finally, open challenges and promising future research directions have been identified and discussed in the area of AI/ML-based fog/edge computing. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. This paper introduces an innovative Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique to extract maximum available power from a Photovoltaic (PV) system irrespective of temperature, solar irradiation and load anomalies. A single-stage DC-DC buck converter that extracts maximum power from the connected PV module and controls the output battery state of charge (SoC) is a key component in achieving this target. The introduced circuit consists of three subsystems: a PV module, a Buck converter and an MPPT plus voltage regulation controller. MPPT is achieved via a novel methodology, not only applies to maximum energy extraction of the PV module but also combined with a feedback optimization of the battery charging and discharging modes. The developed system is geared towards Internet of Things (IoT) based wireless sensor nodes (WSN). In the proposed solution, power harvested from the PV module is combined with the battery power;to guarantee that the connected load receives a full supply of power. To maximize the energy conversion a converter controlled MPPT algorithm-Perturb and Observe (P& O) which considers the non-linear output of the PV is utilized with the aid of the buck converter. The validity of the introduced system is tested using the simulation model in PSIM and the results are presented and discussed. © 2019 IEEE.

With the rapid growth of renewable energy in the power system and the implementation of large-capacity LCC-HVDC projects, the frequency support capability of the grid has been reduced. Simultaneously, the renewables-rich grid faces the risk of high-power shocks due to LCC-HVDC blocking. Existing centralized, single-measure approaches and the model-based emergency frequency control (EFC) methods are facing tremendous challenges. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a frequency emergency control method for renewables-rich grids that coordinates LCC-HVDC emergency power support and load shedding. The coordination of the two stabilization measures is modeled as a decentralized partially observable Markov decision process, and a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MADRL) approach is employed to optimize the power of measures for each stabilization control substation. An MADRL algorithm that integrates the system frequency response model is developed to overcome the problem of inaccurate evaluation of centralized action value in the MADRL algorithm used for EFC. This approach allows for the global optimization of the distributed coordination strategy through centralized training. The effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed method are demonstrated through simulations of the modified IEEE 39-bus system. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Diabetes Mellitus, one of the leading causes of death worldwide, has no cure to date and can lead to severe health complications, such as retinopathy, limb amputation, cardiovascular diseases, and neuronal disease, if left untreated. Consequently, it becomes crucial to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. Machine learning approaches have been proposed and evaluated in the literature for diabetes prediction. This paper proposes an IoT-edge-Artificial Intelligence (AI)-blockchain system for diabetes prediction based on risk factors. The proposed system is underpinned by the blockchain to obtain a cohesive view of the risk factors data from patients across different hospitals and to ensure security and privacy of the user’s data. Furthermore, we provide a comparative analysis of different medical sensors, devices, and methods to measure and collect the risk factors values in the system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between our proposed system, using the most accurate random forest (RF) model, and the two most used state-of-the-art machine learning approaches, Logistic Regression (LR) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), using three real-life diabetes datasets. The results show that the proposed system using RF predicts diabetes with 4.57% more accuracy on average compared to LR and SVM, with 2.87 times more execution time. Data balancing without feature selection does not show significant improvement. The performance is improved by 1.14% and 0.02% after feature selection for PIMA Indian and Sylhet datasets respectively, while it reduces by 0.89% for MIMIC III. © 2022, CC BY.

Architecture information communication in two OSS projects: The why, who, when, and what

Architecture information is vital for Open Source software (OSS) development, and mailing list is one of the widely used channels for developers to share and communicate architecture information. This work investigates the nature of architecture information communication (i.e., why, who, when, and what) by OSS developers via developer mailing lists. We employed a multiple case study approach to extract and analyze the architecture information communication from the developer mailing lists of two OSS projects, ArgoUML and Hibernate, during their development life-cycle of over 18 years. Our main findings are: (a) architecture negotiation and interpretation are the two main reasons (i.e., why) of architecture communication;(b) the amount of architecture information communicated in developer mailing lists decreases after the first stable release (i.e., when);(c) architecture communications centered around a few core developers (i.e., who);(d) and the most frequently communicated architecture elements (i.e., what) are Architecture Rationale and Architecture Model. There are a few similarities of architecture communication between the two OSS projects. Such similarities point to how OSS developers naturally gravitate towards the four aspects of architecture communication in OSS development. © 2021, CC BY.

Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Interpretation of electrocardiography (ECG) signals is required for diagnosing cardiac arrhythmia. Recently, machine learning techniques have been applied for automated computer-aided diagnosis. Machine learning tasks can be divided into regression and classification. Regression can be used for noise and artifacts removal as well as resolve issues of missing data from low sampling frequency. Classification task concerns the prediction of output diagnostic classes according to expert-labeled input classes. In this work, we propose a deep neural network model capable of solving regression and classification tasks. Moreover, we combined the two approaches, using unlabeled and labeled data, to train the model. We tested the model on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database. Our method showed high effectiveness in detecting cardiac arrhythmia based on modified Lead II ECG records, as well as achieved high quality of ECG signal approximation. For the former, our method attained overall accuracy of 87.33% and balanced accuracy of 80.54%, on par with reference approaches. For the latter, application of self-supervised learning allowed for training without the need for expert labels. The regression model yielded satisfactory performance with fairly accurate prediction of QRS complexes. Transferring knowledge from regression to the classification task, our method attained higher overall accuracy of 87.78%. © 2022, CC BY.

With the popularity of the Internet and e-commerce, the sentiment analysis of text can help users to quickly and accurately obtain effective information they are interested in from massive product reviews to purchase satisfactory products. In this paper, a sentiment analysis system for product reviews was designed based on deep learning, and the digital and electronic products on Jingdong Mall with at least 100,000 reviews were crawled as the training data set. After data pre-processing operations such as word segmentation and removal of stop words for product reviews to remove useless features, the feature vectors were constructed based on the bag of words model and word2vec method, and then three classification algorithms, namely LSTM, Naive Bayes and logistic regression were used to model reviews. The LSTM algorithm is significantly superior to Naive Bayes and logistic regression algorithm in the training stage, and provides a reliable reference for the analysis of product reviews.
