This paper deals with modelling and adaptive output tracking of a Transverse Flux Permanent Magnet Machine (TFPM) as a non-linear system with unknown nonlinearities by utilizing High Gain Observer (HGO) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks. The technique of feedback linearization and H ∞ control are used to design an adaptive control law for compensating the unknown nonlinearity parts, such the effect of cogging torque, as a disturbance is decreased onto the rotor angle and angular velocity tracking performances. Finally, the capability of the proposed method is shown in the simulation results.

In this paper an alternative approach to non-linear predictive control is presented. It is based on iterative linearisation of the model response so that the same closed loop responses as in the pure non-linear approach are obtained but with reduced computation times and more efficient optimisation tools. The method is applied to a high purity distillation column and some results are presented showing the behaviour of the proposed algorithm.

Formation of the thallium (Tl) overlayers on the Si(100)2×1 surface has been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and first-principles total-energy calculations. It has been found that adsorption of Tl atom involves a charge transfer leading to the development of a static dipole which is responsible for the field-assisted migration of the Tl adsorbate on the surface. When the STM tip bias voltage is positive, Tl atoms are repelled out from the region underneath the tip apex. In the case of the negative bias voltage, Tl is accumulated underneath the tip. Four principal ordered Tl∕Si(100) reconstructions have been found, namely, three 2×2−Tl reconstructions with 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 ML of Tl and 2×1−Tl reconstruction with 1.0 ML of Tl. The possible atomic arrangement of these reconstructions has been evaluated using first-principles total-energy calculations.

Currently the doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) is often used in wind power plants. The digital rotor current controller is always based on DFIM models linearized within a sampling period which does not correspond to the nonlinear nature of the DFIM. The paper deals with a nonlinear control scheme with direct decoupling and presents some first investigation results. This new controller helps to improve ride-through of the wind turbine during grid faults

An algebraic formulation is proposed for the static output feedback (SOF) problem: the Hermite stability criterion is applied on the closed-loop characteristic polynomial, resulting in a non-convex bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) optimization problem for SIMO or MISO systems. As a result, the BMI problem is formulated directly in the controller parameters, without additional Lyapunov variables. The publicly available solver PENBMI 2.0 interfaced with YALMIP 3.0 is then applied to solve benchmark examples. Implementation and numerical aspects are widely discussed.

The room-temperature 2×1 structure at the one-monolayer Tl∕Si(100)2×1 surface has been found to undergo a temperature-induced reversible transition into the ground-state (6,1)×(0,6) structure through the formation of the intermediate “c(4×7)” structure. The transition is interpreted as an order-disorder transition due to hopping fluctuation of Tl atoms in the chains. The transition is associated with developing of the long-periodic transverse wandering in the chains of Tl atoms through an interchain interaction.

The aim of this paper is twofold. It provides another option how to obtain a universal easily implementable method for the solution of the regulator equations using the FEMLAB package. The regulator equation originates from the output regulation problem. The main idea is making a slight change of the regulator equation. It is then solved using the finite-element method. Some theoretical aspects concerning solvability of the equations and convergence to the original problem are introduced. Secondly to demonstrate viability of our approach, the results were applied to the real-time control of a gyroscope. Both simulations and real-time laboratory experiments are included.

A survey of robotic competitions all over the world, their short history and present state is given. Contests are classified according to their difficulty and conditions. Typical competition categories, also with interesting robot constructions are described. Sense, advantages and disadvantages of contests are discussed, especially concerning educational purposes. At the same time, our experiences with organising the contest Istrobot are presented.

This paper presents a scheduling technique for a library of arithmetic logarithmic modules for FPGA illustrated on a RLS filter for active noise cancellation. The problem under assumption is to find an optimal periodic cyclic schedule satisfying the timing constraints. The approach is based on a transformation to monoprocessor cyclic scheduling with precedence delays. We prove that this problem is NP-hard and we suggest a solution based on Integer Linear Programming that allows to minimize completion time. Finally experimental results of optimized RLS filter are shown.
