Recently, combining a video recording of a presentation along with the digital slides used in it has become popular in e-learning and presentation of archives. For users of the archives, it is useful to preview a digest of such content to grasp the atmosphere and/or an outline of the presentation. This paper proposes a method of automatic digest generation by extracting important scenes from the presentation content. The extracted scenes are chosen based on several factors such as frequency and specificity of words, scene duration and order. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methods are evaluated by comparing with testers' answer sets for actual lectures.

It is well known that speech production and perception process is inherently bimodal consisting of audio and visual components. Recently there has been increased interest in using the visual modality in combination with the acoustic modality for improved speech processing. This field of study has gained the title of audio-visual speech processing. Lip movement recognition, also known as lip reading, is a communication skill which involves the interpretation of lip movements in order to estimate some important parameters of the lips that include, but not limited to, size, shape and orientation. In this paper, we represent a hybrid framework for lip reading which is based on both audio and visual speech parameters extracted from a video stream of isolated spoken words. The proposed algorithm is self-tuned in the sense that it starts with an estimations of speech parameters based on visual lip features and then the coefficients of the algorithm are fine-tuned based on the extracted audio parameters. In the audio speech processing part, extracted audio features are used to generate a vector containing information of the speech phonemes. These information are used later to enhance the recognition and matching process. For lip feature extraction, we use a modified version of the method used by F. Huang and T. Chen for tracking of multiple faces. This method is based on statistical color modeling and the deformable template. The experiments based on the proposed framework showed interesting results in recognition of isolated words.

Based on the ZeroX algorithm, we proposed a fast and efficient crosstalk-free algorithm called the Fast ZeroX algorithm for solving optical crosstalk problem in omega networks. In our approach, we introduced the concept of inverse conflict matrix (iCM), another representation of a conflict matrix in which it summarizes all possible conflicts between each node in the network. Using iCM, the ZeroX algorithm is simplified, thus improved by reducing the time needed for routing process. From our simulation results, it is shown that our approach yields better performance in terms of minimal routing time in comparison to the original ZeroX algorithm.

Large scale matrix inversion has been used in many domains and block-based Gauss-Jordan (G-J) algorithm as a classical method of large matrix inversion has become the focus of many researchers. Many people show us their parallel version of G-J. But the large parallel granularity in those algorithms restricts the performance of parallel block-based G-J algorithm, especially in the cluster environment consisting of PCs or workstations. This paper presents a fine-grained parallel G-J algorithm to settle the problem presented above. Experiments are made based on YML a framework which enables using different middleware to make large scale parallel computing for its feathers of components reuse, easy programmability for noncomputer professionals. Cluster and Grid environments are based on Grid'5000 platform, France. Experiments show us that the better performance of fine-grained parallel G-J algorithm and YML though overhead existing is a good solution for large scale parallel computing.

This paper focuses on H ∞ controller design for systems with a time-varying delay. By taking the relationship among the time-varying delay, its upper bound and their difference into account, an improved delay-dependent bounded real lemma (BRL) is proposed. The design method for H ∞ controllers is given using a modified cone complementary linearisation (CCL) algorithm with a new stopping condition. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and the benefits of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a recursive method of constructing weak-control-Lyapunov functions for nonlinear systems. Lyapunov function is one of effective tools to study stability and stabilization in nonlinear system control design. However, a general way of finding Lyapunov functions has not been known yet. Our method is introduced by an explicit topological-geometric assumption for a state space manifold, called a Morse-Smale. The assumption indicates that there exists a sequence of inclusions of the manifold and its singular structures, called a weak-Lyapunov filtration. From this structure, we can construct a finite number of iterations to define weak-control-Lyapunov functions. As a result, the existence of the weak-control-Lyapunov functions can be specified by the investigation of property of manifolds.

We present a novel mobile memory aid tool, called ClickCatalog System (http://***/atreader/). In our daily lives, we find many interesting items during shopping, in exposition events, or in conferences. We often try to remember them for later recall by writing memos, taking pictures, etc. Those hints (notes and pictures) are, however, easy to be lost. Using ClickCatalog System, users can collect digital records of the items with an easy-to-handle hardware called @reader, which embeds an RFID reader. After a day, they can recall the stored records using a viewer software. The viewer can be operated using the same device, @reader, by manipulating it on a paper calendar (to recall the records temporarily) or on a paper map (to do so geographically). This paper shows the prototype implementation of ClickCatalog System, a range of applications, and, our empirical study using prototype ClickCatalog System.

Grid environment is dynamic and open, therefore the reputation of entities in Grid is becoming the focus of people's attention. Although, recently the study on the Grid computing is resultful, the researches of reputation field are still not perfect, especially in the field of computational economy for Grid. This paper presents a reputation calculation model, which is suitable in the environment of computational economy for Grid. We also design a Reputation Control Module (RCM) based on the reputation model, using for resource management in computational economy for Grid. Additionally we give a detailed introduction of the internal structure and workflow of RCM. At last the paper shows the significance of our research through simulating experiments. © 2007 IEEE.
