Universality of interfacial roughness in growing epithelial tissue has remained a controversial issue. Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) and Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) universality classes have been reported among other behaviors including total lack of universality. Here, we utilize a kinetic division model for deformable cells to investigate cell-colony scaling. With seemingly minor model changes, it can reproduce both KPZ- and MBE-like scaling in configurations that mimic the respective experiments. This result neutralizes the apparent scaling controversy. It can be speculated that this diversity in growth behavior is beneficial for efficient evolution and versatile growth dynamics. © 2022, CC BY.

The evolution of epidemiological parameters, such as instantaneous reproduction number Rt, is important for understanding the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. Current estimates of time-varying epidemiological parameters often face problems such as lagging observations, averaging inference, and improper quantification of uncertainties. To address these problems, we propose a Bayesian data assimilation framework for time-varying parameter estimation. Specifically, this framework is applied to Rt estimation, resulting in the state-of-the-art 'DARt' system. With DARt, time misalignment caused by lagging observations is tackled by incorporating observation delays into the joint inference of infections and Rt;the drawback of averaging is overcome by instantaneously updating upon new observations and developing a model selection mechanism that captures abrupt changes;the uncertainty is quantified and reduced by employing Bayesian smoothing. We validate the performance of DARt and demonstrate its power in revealing the transmission dynamics of COVID-19. The proposed approach provides a promising solution for accurate and timely estimating transmission dynamics from reported data. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The known Iπ=81+, Ex=2129−keV isomer in the semimagic nucleus Cd13082 was populated in the projectile fission of a U238 beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. The high counting statistics of the accumulated data allowed us to determine the excitation energy, Ex=2001.2(7) keV, and half-life, T1/2=57(3) ns, of the Iπ=61+ state based on γγ coincidence information. Furthermore, the half-life of the 81+ state, T1/2=224(4) ns, was remeasured with high precision. The new experimental information, combined with available data for Sn134 and large-scale shell model calculations, allowed us to extract proton and neutron effective charges for Sn132, a doubly magic nucleus far-off stability. A comparison to analogous information for Sn100 provides first reliable information regarding the isospin dependence of the isoscalar and isovector effective charges in heavy nuclei.

This work presents a redox-mediated electrolytic nitrogen reduction reaction (RM-eNRR) using polyoxometalate (POM) as the electron and proton carrier which frees the TiO 2 -based catalyst from the electrode and shifts the reduction of nitrogen to a reactor tank. The RM-eNRR process has achieved an ammonium production yield of 25.1 μg h −1 or 5.0 μg h −1 cm −2 at an ammonium concentration of 6.7 ppm. With high catalyst loading, 61.0 ppm ammonium was accumulated in the electrolyte upon continuous operation, which is the highest concentration detected for ambient eNRR so far. The mechanism underlying the RM-eNRR was scrutinized both experimentally and computationally to delineate the POM-mediated charge transfer and hydrogenation process of nitrogen molecule on the catalyst. RM-eNRR is expected to provide an implementable solution to overcome the limitations in the conventional eNRR process.

To investigate the fundamental nature of matter and its interactions, particles are accelerated to very high energies and collided inside detectors, producing a multitude of other particles that are scattered in all directions. As charged particles traverse the detector, they leave signals of their passage. The problem of track reconstruction is to recover the original trajectories from these signals. This challenging data analysis task will become even more demanding as the luminosity of future accelerators increases, leading to collision events with a more complex structure. We identify four fundamental routines present in every local tracking method and analyse how they scale in the context of a standard tracking algorithm. We show that for some of these routines we can reach a lower computational complexity with quantum search algorithms. Although the found quantum speedups are mild, this constitutes, to the best of our knowledge, the first rigorous evidence of a quantum advantage for a high-energy physics data processing task. One of the objectives of Visual IoT is to realize safe and secure society via remote video transmission. Low-cost cameras play an important role since we need to distribute many cameras in the society. To achieve wide coverage of monitoring with single IP network camera, remote PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) function is one of the preferable solutions that is installed in IP network camera at high location such as at the top of mountains. In this paper we propose techniques of PTZ remote control of low-cost IP cameras for Visual IoT systems over mobile networks. At first, one of the regulations of PTZ remote-control, ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) Profile S, is introduced for remote operations over IP networks. We then design and implement remote ONVIF commands in our Visual IoT system. Finally the system performances are examined in both laboratory environment and outdoor fields. The remote PTZ operations is practically successful while issues are discussed to achieve area monitoring with a high precision using low-cost IP network cameras.

In the field of electronic warfare (EW), sorting of low probability of intercept (LPI) radar signals is very important in order to determine the capability of the intercept radar emitter. This paper presents a novel form of sorting various types of airborne radar signals using Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). The WVD is modified using two kernel filters in order to cater for various forms of signal distortions due to noise. The sorting is carried using the instantaneous frequency (IF) obtained from this modified WVD which involves sorting the LPI radar signals into LPI-phase or LPI-frequency group. The non-LPI radar signal of constant frequency and phase parameter is also considered for the sake of test signal completion. Performance analysis is finally carried out at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in order to verify the probability of correct sorting (PCS). Results obtained showed that PCS depends on the internal modulation of the intercepted signal. The proposed method was able to easily sort non-LPI radar signal with 100% PCS achieved at minimum SNR of -12 dB while the remaining LPI radar signals required higher SNR for 100% PCS. Finally, it was shown in this paper that the proposed method outperforms previous works reviewed.

We discuss the effect of sequential error injection on information leakage under a network code. We formulate a network code for the single transmission setting and the multiple transmission setting. Under this formulation, we show that the eavesdropper cannot improve the power of eavesdropping by sequential error injection when the operations in the network are linear *** demonstrate the usefulness of this reduction theorem by applying a concrete example of network.
