Modern text detection algorithms rely on deep neural networks, which are trained on labeled datasets to achieve high performance. Despite the increasing popularity of text detection, accurate detection of text in natural images remains a challenging problem due to variations in text size, shape, color, and font. In particular, curved text instances present a unique challenge for detection algorithms, yet they are seldom found in existing text detection datasets. In this paper, we present an approach to improve curved text detection performance by generating synthetic images with curved text instances and polygon bounding regions as annotations. We train a deep neural network-based text detector on these synthetic images and evaluate its performance on test sets. Our findings highlight the importance of utilizing diverse and realistic datasets for training robust text detection systems. © 2023 IEEE.

To successfully train modern object detectors in a supervised manner, a large number of labeled images is usually required. Collecting and annotating images can be an expensive and time-consuming job, especially in the field of autonomous driving. A cheaper and faster alternative can be found in computer simulations of real-world traffic scenes, where the object of interest can be automatically labeled. In this spirit, a tool for automatic labeling of the images obtained from CARLA autonomous driving simulator is proposed. The tool runs in parallel with CARLA simulator and creates a synthetic dataset with annotations in the appropriate format for the following objects of interest: Traffic lights, traffic signs, vehicles, and pedestrians. The tool enables the end-user to generate a synthetic dataset with a desired number of images and with desired parameters such as weather condition, image resolution, and traffic density. In that way, large synthetic datasets can be generated in a short period of time. © 2023 IEEE.

Multi-label classification is an important task in machine learning applications. However, today, these methods have more challenges due to high-dimensional data. Existing methods in the literature have not yet reached an acceptable performance, and as the number of labels in the dataset increases, their performance becomes weaker. Thus providing effective feature selection methods is necessary and is suitable for all data. Ensemble feature selection is also a new approach based on combining the results of several feature selection methods. Ensemble approaches have been used in many single-label applications and have provided adequate results. However, this technique is less considered in multi-label feature selection. For this purpose, in this article, we have presented a method based on an ensemble of feature selection methods. This paper presents an ensemble multi-label feature method using rank aggregation algorithms. Three filter rankers with different structures are utilized to obtain the final ranking. This rank aggregation process is treated like an election where the rankers are assumed to be the voters, and the features are the alternatives. The Weighted Borda Count (WBC) method conducts the election process. Finally, the performance and results obtained by the proposed method are compared with the nine filter-based algorithms used based on six multi-label datasets. Most of the selected datasets have a high number of class labels, and the proposed method has recorded the best classification performance in all these datasets. Also, the results show that this method is not well affected by the adverse effects of the algorithms used. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This article introduces a novel method for efficiently and promptly operating protection relays within a power system, with a specific emphasis on adaptive overcurrent (OC) protection in a power grid. The approach utilizes SEL751 and SEL751A relays that communicate through the IEC-61850 GOOSE protocol, establishing connections using intelligent electronic devices (IED) at several locations in the system. The power system, consisting of transformers, bus bars, and feeders, employs protection relays to identify OC faults based on time and current parameters. Relay configurations are tested in a case study at the Omicron Lab involving a 138/25kV substation. The test encompasses various fault scenarios on the low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) sides, incorporating different current values and fault times, utilizing the chosen time-overcurrent U3 (very inverse) curve. The proposed approach exhibits the ability to promptly remove faults in transformers and substations at both the HV and the LV levels. Furthermore, the experimental results closely match the theoretical calculations, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach in the protection of AC grids. Additionally, built-in cybersecurity measures in SEL relays ensure secure and reliable operation, mitigating the risks of cyber-related relay failures. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

This paper discusses the significance of research focused on progressive dementia due to the pressing needs of an aging population. Technological solutions have been explored as useful tools to diagnose, manage and treat elderly patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). Interactive games have proven to be an effective therapeutic approach for individuals with AD, improving cognitive function and quality of life. An interactive game was incorporated in my-MOBAL app, a personalized digital memory book, was developed to enhance reminiscence and stimulate cognitive function in individuals with AD. A feasibility study was conducted with clinical experts, an elderly user, and caretakers to collect data via interview and direct observation. Qualitative data collected over 8 weeks showed that personalized interactive games tailored to specific user can promote a sense of familiarity and connection to identity, providing comfort and reducing disorientation in individuals with dementia. It also encouraged communication between the user and the caretakers. Incorporating personalized elements in the interactive games could help to promote autonomy and independence, which are crucial for maintaining self-identity in individuals with dementia. © ICT *** rights reserved.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are characterized by some important attributes, including infrastructure, mobile, and dynamic nature, which makes them have vast applications in different areas of computer networks. The black hole attack falls among the strongly criticized security threats within the framework of the MANETs. This deceptive behavior captures data packets from a source destined for the malicious node and then declines them when they are received. This paper comprehensively reviews prior studies done to analyze and mitigate black hole attacks in MANETs. Besides this, we will conduct a comparative analysis of the research above projects. The present paper extends prior work by actually performing the black hole assault simulations in a MANETs environment. This is done with the aid of the NS2 simulator and the Ad Hoc On-Demands Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol. In this study, the black hole attack is analyzed and the consequences of the attack are assessed in terms of the system performance and security. We analyze crucial parameters like end-to-end latency, PDR, packet drop, and throughput to evaluate the consequences of this assault. From our results derived from the analysis of our simulations, we aim to present substantial points to do with the impacts of blackhole attacks on MANETs. In this way, our goal is to participate in the perpetually evolving efforts aimed at enhancing the security and reliability of such dynamic networks. © 2024 IEEE.

In the big data technology nowadays, activities associated with Multi-Label Classification (MLC) pose big and complex challenges, receiving terrific interest in diverse fields. Existing MLC algorithms suffer from low overall performance. This paper considers four well-known Problem Transformation Methods (PTMs). Two of these PTMs are based on the frequency of the labels (MFL and LFL) while the last two PTMs are based on the positive correlations among labels. These PTMs have been implemented and compared against four multi label datasets of various sizes to identify the best one that fits the nature of MLC datasets. Moreover, six popular ensemble learning models have been carried out and compared on the four datasets with respect to several evaluation metrics such as Accuracy, Hamming loss, and Exact Match and using SMO, DecisionStump, Random Forest, and Random Commission classifiers. The results revealed that MFL accomplished the quality performance amongst the four PTMs, and Stacking SVM is the best ensemble learning technique. © 2024 IEEE.

Microsphere and microcylinder-assisted microscopy (MAM) has grown to an intensively studied optical farfield imaging technique over the last decade that overcomes the fundamental lateral resolution limit of a given microscope. However, the physical effects leading to resolution enhancement are still frequently debated. In addition, various configurations of MAMs operating in transmission as well as reflection mode are examined and results generalized. We present a rigorous simulation model of MAM and present a way to quantify the resolution simulatively. The lateral resolution is compared for microscope arrangements in reflection and transmission mode. Further, we discuss different physical effects with respect to their contribution to resolution enhancement. The results indicate that the effects affecting the resolution as well as the enhancement itself strongly depend on the arrangement of the microscope and the measurement object. © 2023 SPIE.

Due to the rapid development of power electronics and new energy generation, conventional transformers cannot meet the higher requirements of intelligent grids due to a lack of controllability. While solid-state transformers (SSTs) are currently costly, making it impossible for them to be used widely in power networks. For this reason, a compromise solution of a hybrid transformer (HT) combining the traditional line frequency transformer (LFT) with power electronic devices has attracted more and more attention. Based on existing HT research, topologies of HT are classified according to installation position and connection type of power electronic devices. Rough theoretical analyses were carried out from the point of view of voltage compensation, current compensation, and power flow control. A review of HT topology in recent years is also included. © 2023 IEEE.
