This article presents a new method of empirical classification, shows how it is used to develop a consumer typology, and tests the sensitivity of the typology to various changes in assumptions, operations, and procedures. These operational effects are considered from the viewpoint of their significance in typology generation and for the long-run potential of classification methods and procedures in marketing and market segmentation.

Medicare's impact will be gradual and long-term rather than abrupt and short-term. Its impact on hospital utilization will not be, significant; an increase in the utilization of nursing, homes is more likely. The financial impact of Medicare on hospitals can be expected to be fairly significant since the aged as a group now represent; over half of the unpaid days in voluntary hospitals. Medicare can be expected to increase the demand for professional personnel in hospitals and nursing homes, but the manpower shortage may ease when financing, under Medicare enables institutions to attract more personnel. Hospital costs will rise more rapidly because of Medicare, and all aspects of hospital management will be closely scrutinized. The greatest impact of Medicare on hospitals will be on the nature of the hospital itself; hospitals will become community rather than institutionally oriented and can expect to become more publicly directed. The entire Medicare program has been designed to fit and support our voluntary system and a rewarding relationship between hospitals and the Medicare program can be achieved.
