Diagnosis of pathological manifestations in popular housing of COHAB in Caruaru, Pernambuco: a forensic approach

The construction of Social Interest Housing through housing programs is a crucial government investment aimed at reducing housing deficits and ensuring housing rights for low-income populations. However, despite driving the growth of the construction industry, historically these constructions have faced pathological manifestations. The term "pathology" in this context refers to defects, non-conformities, and failures in constructions. Thus, this study is aimed at examining the pathological manifestations in social interest housing provided by the Popular Housing Company (COHAB-PE), focusing on popular residences built with subsidies targeted at housing programs in Caruaru, in the rural area of Pernambuco. The study, classified as exploratory and documentary following technical procedures, aims to analyze and identify recurring patterns of structural problems in popular housing. This was carried out through the analysis of 36 residences located in Caruaru, all of residential nature. The results underscore the need to investigate such issues, highlighting anomalies mostly related to construction errors, such as the lack of appropriate structural elements and waterproofing in foundations. The proposed technical solutions aim to ensure residents' safety. The lack of compliance with standards and the recurrence of the same problems over time and across different construction companies indicate a systemic failure in construction methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Optimizing waste pre-collection model in Indonesian communities: comparing drop-off and door-to-door models through social cost–benefit analysis

Indonesia lacks an established waste pre-collection system resulting 90% waste ending up in open-dumping site. This study identifies a 35-m radius per drop-off points as the most optimal model. The City of South Tangerang, on 21 residential areas with a population of 63,157, being examine. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro and Python scripting, 12 scenarios were developed, model drop-off radii of 15–45 m and household limits of 4–32 per drop-off point, including combined models. Spatial clustering KD-Tree algorithm and Proximity-based Routing were employed to determine collection placements and walking distances. Heatmap and ANOVA tests evaluated conformity with residential characteristics. Model then organized into eight frequency schemes, utilizing motorcart and handcart systems with 4-day and 2-day pickup schedules for waste bank and in-house compost programs. This optimized model reduces collection time by up to 81% and costs by 50% compared to traditional door-to-door systems, achieving cost reductions of $30–$38 USD per ton and lowering CO₂ emissions. The discussion covers opportunity costs and occupational risk. Investigation of Microplastic Abundance from Commercial Marine Fish in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia

The plastic pollution is an ever-growing issue across the globe. In particular, Microplastics (MPs) can act as toxin accumulators in the fish tissues, which may transfer to human bodies via food chain and potentially harmful to human health. In Malaysia, studies related to MPs mostly focused on sediment and wild-caught freshwater fish. However, there is a lack of study on commercial marine fish especially conducted in Bintulu, Sarawak, East Malaysia. Therefore, this study was to investigate and establish baseline data for future research and monitor of MPs pollution in Bintulu's marine environment. The MPs were observed in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) and gills from the 6 species of commercial marine fish. The sample was digested with 15% of KOH solution, with shaking at 90 rpm, at 60 °C for 24 h, then continued with shaking at 90 rpm at room temperature for 24 h. After that, the MPs sample were extracted by density separation using 100 mL NaCl solution. The samples were identified and characterized under stereomicroscope and Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). As the result, the highest abundance was found in Alepes djedaba with an abundance of 3.51 ± 0.764 items/g, and the lowest abundance was found in Gerres filamentosus with an abundance of 1.48 ± 0.440 items/g. The most dominant shape, color and size of MPs across the study were fiber (73%), blue (47%) and less than 1 mm (67%), respectively. FTIR analysis detected polymer compositions of polystyrene (PS) and polyamide (PA) in the sample. This study provides baseline data on MPs research in Bintulu and becomes source of information for policy makers to take better actions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass has become an economical and environmentally friendly substitute to current petroleum-based fuels. This is due to its ability to decrease carbon dioxide emissions and make use of plentiful natural resources. Current advances in this area concentrate on improving the effectiveness and expandability of the conversion procedures by using inventive pretreatment approaches, enhanced enzyme compositions, and refined fermentation technologies. Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) and utilizing genetically modified microbes have expedited the decomposition of intricate biomass complexes and enhanced overall productivity. Furthermore, process intensification developments, such as the adoption of hybrid reactors and continuous production systems, have considerably decreased production expenses and energy usage. Nevertheless, there are still obstacles to overcome, including the raw materials inconsistency, the demand for efficient recovery and purifying techniques, and the financial viability of extensive processes. This study examines the latest developments in bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass. It focuses on ecological approaches, technical advancements, and the main obstacles that need to be overcome to exploit its promise as a biofuel fully. This review primarily focused on outcomes documented in the last five years from 2019 to 2024. The first segment of this work focuses on the second-generation bioethanol production process, which includes: the properties and composition of lignocellulosic biomass, pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and fermentation. The subsequent portion of this paper examines a techno-economic analysis, the obstacles and the prospective technology outlook. It finishes by discussing findings from research fields that haven't been investigated yet, besides the obstacles faced in bioethanol manufacturing methods. © The Author(s) 2025.

Inner-sphere adsorption of orthophosphates on amorphous aluminum hydroxide: The Laplace transform solution to a kinetic model involving first-order Taylor approximations to the Langmuir isotherm

The kinetics of interaction between orthophosphates and Al(OH)3 is of importance to remove phosphorus from wastewater and to understand its mobility and bioavailability in soils. In this study, the kinetics of adsorption of orthophosphates on amorphous Al(OH)3 was examined in an agitated vessel containing an aqueous solution with initial adsorbate concentrations (C0) ranging from ∼3 to 92 mg L−1, at ∼25 °C and pH ∼ 6.9. The soluble orthophosphates were rapidly adsorbed by inner-sphere complexation, but the adsorption capacity was limited to ∼13 mg of phosphorus per g of Al(OH)3. The yield of removal of adsorbing species from the liquid changed from ∼5 to 73 %. A novel reliable adsorption kinetic model was proposed by an original analytical solution of a system of differential equations from adsorbate balances. This solution by using Laplace transform was possible because a valid, robust and simplified procedure was suggested to describe the Langmuir isotherm by first-order Taylor approximations (R2 ∼ 0.93). By contrast to the usual kinetic modeling approaches for liquid–solid adsorption, the current model involves an effective adsorption rate constant (kCA = 3.840 × 10−4 L s−1) considered to be independent of C0. The rates of adsorbate transport from the bulk liquid to the internal adsorbent surface were supposed to be much slower than that of orthophosphates adsorption. ICP spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, EDX spectroscopy and gas adsorption analyses confirm that phosphorous was adsorbed on mesoporous amorphous Al(OH)3 with average pore size of 263 Å and specific surface area of ∼100 m2 g−1. A large independent set of adsorption data for P on Al(OH)3 was used to explain and validate the results. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Structural performance of direct foundations of onshore wind turbine towers considering SSI: A literature review

The exponential increase in the construction of energy generation systems using wind turbines has driven the need for taller towers in search of stronger winds, resulting in challenges for the development of structural solutions. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on advancements in the modeling and design of direct foundations for wind turbine towers, emphasizing the importance of soil–structure interaction (SSI). The review covers three-dimensional models developed to analyze the impact of SSI, as well as the optimization of designs considering deflections and structural requirements. The main goal of the paper is to provide detailed insights to serve as a starting point for further research on direct foundations for wind turbine towers. Structural model analysis and the use of methods such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have revealed significant variations in the effectiveness of foundations, depending on geometry and soil characteristics. The results highlight the importance of considering SSI for an accurate representation of the overall structural response. In the design and enhancement of wind structures, critical factors such as displacements and stresses must be considered when evaluating the interactions between the structure and the soil. Integrating these design considerations into the improvement of foundations is essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of these structures, meeting the growing demands of the industry and promoting sustainability in wind energy generation. Thus, this research makes a significant contribution to the understanding and advancement of engineering practices for wind turbine tower foundations, establishing an important starting point for future investigations. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Decade-long performance of constructed wetlands in the dairy industry following an aerated facultative pond

Long-term data are essential for decision-making in the operation of constructed wetlands;however, such data are scarce. In the present study, a subsurface flow CW system was monitored over a 10-year period for the treatment of wastewater from the dairy industry. Prior to the CW, an aerated facultative lagoon was operated, and its data were also included in the study. The integration of both natural treatment systems (Lagoon + CW) revealed synergy in the combined removal of pollutants and nutrients. Up until the seventh year of operation, the integration of the systems removed more than 98% of COD, BOD5, and TSS, as well as 99.8%, 96.5%, and 71.3% of oils and greases, ammoniacal nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively. Surfactants, oils, and greases were entirely removed. The presence of significant clogging and surface flow from the seventh year onwards led to a reduction in treatment efficiency, indicating that this is the maximum recommended operating time for CWs following an aerated facultative lagoon in the dairy industry. After this period, all substrates should be replaced. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

A systematic literature review on adsorption of potentially toxic elements from aquatic systems by sugarcane and corn residues

Potentially toxic elements (PTE) pose environmental concerns due to their persistence, toxicity, and accumulation in living organisms. Their effective removal from waters and effluents is crucial for preserving aquatic ecosystems, human health, and biodiversity. Conventional treatment methods face challenges like waste generation and harmful substances. In this context, adsorption using agro-industrial residues emerges as a sustainable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly alternative. This is especially relevant in countries like Brazil, the United States, India, China, Argentina, and Thailand, where sugarcane and corn residues are abundantly available. This systematic literature review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the adsorption of PTE from aquatic systems using sugarcane and corn residues, contributing to the identification of trends, gaps, and future directions in this field. Sugarcane bagasse and corncobs are highlighted as the most commonly used residues. The most frequently reported experimental conditions include grinding as treatment, batch mode adsorption, adsorbate concentration of 50 mg L−1, adsorbent concentration of 10 mg L−1, temperature of 25 °C, and a contact time of 60 min. Specific details such as particle size (0.25 mm for sugarcane, 0.15 mm for corn), main PTE (Pb for sugarcane, Cd for corn), and optimal pH (5 for sugarcane, 6 for corn) were also identified. However, research gaps remain, such as the use of sugarcane and corn leaves, the biological modification of residues, and the study of less-explored PTEs like Fe and Mn. These gaps provide opportunities for future investigations and advances in water treatment technologies.

Fibrotic and emphysematous murine lung mechanics under negative-pressure ventilation

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, and the progressive nature heightens the calamity of the disease. In existing COPD studies, lung mechanics are often reported under positive-pressure ventilation (PPV) and extrapolations made from these studies pose restrictions as recent works have divulged disparate elastic and energetic results between PPV and more physiological negative-pressure ventilation (NPV) counterparts. This nonequivalence of PPV and NPV must be investigated under diseased states to augment our understanding of disease mechanics. To assess the comparability of diseased pulmonary mechanics in PPV and NPV, we pose a novel study to parse out the currently entangled contributions of ventilation mode and diseased state by analyzing murine PV curves from porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) and hog dust extract (HDE) induced COPD models under positive and negative pressures. We find that, for PPE-exposed, under NPV, volume, compliance (C, C_start, and C_def), and hysteresis are increased in diseased states and that under PPV, only compliance (C and C_start) is increased. For HDE-exposed, under NPV, volume, compliance (C, C_inf, C_def, and K), and hysteresis are decreased, whereas, under PPV, only volume and static compliance decreased. All significant mechanical variations due to disease were observed solely at higher pressures (40 cmH₂O) under both PPV and NPV. Our nuanced conclusions indicate the detection capabilities of multiple mechanics-based biomarkers are sensitive to the ventilation mode, where NPV exhibits more altered mechanics metrics in PPE-exposed and HDE-exposed groups compared with PPV counterparts, suggesting the resolution of biomarkers when applied under NPV research considerations may offer greater versatility. The two-stage pH-controlled fluidized-bed non-seeded granulation process for treating Cu and Pb was explored. This investigation specifically examined operational conditions including Cu-to-Pb molar ratio (MR1), metal-to-carbonate molar ratio (MR2), hydraulic retention time (HRT), and first-stage pH (pH1). Multilayered, spherical, brittle, light blue granules were recovered. X-ray diffraction only detected cerussite (PbCO3) crystals, while the Pb Pourbaix diagram and solubility curve confirmed the cerussite stability. Meanwhile, the presence of bicarbonate could feasibly alter the prevailing voltage potential, generating the Cu-hydroxide interface in water. Furthermore, copper species in granules possibly formed amorphous solids due to low copper levels and inhibition of ionic Pb. Besides PbCO3 crystals, the development of amorphous Cu-carbonate hydroxide could also occur during granulation. The transition to pH 8.0 in the second stage could affect the solid solubility and the surface charge influencing the accumulation and the agglomeration, respectively. Operational conditions also significantly impacted particle growth, total removal, and accumulation rates. The sub-optimal condition was found at MR1 = 5.0, MR2 = 1.5, HRT = 22.5 min, and pH1 = 7.5 producing relatively high percentages of large granules, high removal efficiencies > 99 %, and accumulation rates between 80 % and 95 %. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
