We present the in-line torsion sensing scheme using the twin-core photonic crystal fiber (TC-PCF). An in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer can be effectively configured by splicing a section of TC-PCF between two SMFs. The torsion sensitivity was measured by monitoring the twist-induced spectral fringe shift. The channeled spectrum was found to shift bi-directionally as the twist rate was increased. The peak wavelength shifts toward longer wavelength sides then the shift rate is gradually reduced. Finally the peak wavelength shifts toward shorter wavelength region with the increased twist rates.

We present a novel platform for noninvasive transmural cardiac electrophysiological imaging (NTCEI),which combines body-surface electrocardiographic data and image-derived anatomic data to compute subject-specific electrophysiological dynamics and electroanatomic substrates not only on heart surfaces but along the depth of the *** success on real-data experiments include 1) transmural scar quantification for patients withprevious history of myocardial infarction;2) trasnmural EP and scar imaging for patients with ventricular arrhythmia;and 3) transmural EP and scar imaging on porcine hearts with chronic *** experiments demonstrated the potentials in computing transmural EP anomalies using only noninvasive observations and without any conditionspecific knowledge a priori,which could not be achieved with either current EP mapping or structural imaging techniques *** will also briefly discuss development towards hardware realizations and clinical feasibility.

This paper presents a study aimed at investigating on whether the text mining technique using graphs can be used to analyze the relevance of the messages in online forums. Experiments were carried out with a program that calculates the thematic relevance of text contributions. In addition, the paper presents results found in the automatic analysis obtained by the application of the software.

We demonstrate the highly reflective broadband a-Si distributed Bragg reflector fabricated by oblique angle deposition. By tuning the refractive index of a-Si film, the high index contrast material system was achieved. The broadband reflective characteristics of a-Si distributed Bragg reflector were investigated by calculation and fabrication. The broad stop band (Δλ/λ=33.7%, R>99%) with only a five-pair a-Si distributed Bragg reflector was achieved experimentally at center wavelength of 650, 980, and 1550 nm. The size-, feature- and substrate-independent method for highly reflective Bragg reflectors was realized by simple oblique angle evaporation.

We propose a practical fiber optic probe, which uses a fiber patch cord and an anti-reflection coated ball lens for dental optical coherence tomography imaging. The probe has benefits of compactness, long working distance as well as comfort and oral hygiene for patients. With the proposed probe, the image of a human tooth, having enamel, dentin, dento-enamel junction and crack, was successively obtained. © 2011 AOS.

Variations in electrical impedance over frequency might be used to distinguish the degree of atopic dermatitis (AD), even if the mechanisms of the skin barrier impairment due to AD are still unknown. We observed the skin bioimpedance of normal mice and of abnormal mice having atopic with instrument measuring electrical impedance. Electrical impedance was measured from 20Hz to 1MHz at many frequencies and normalized with several indices such as IMP, PIX, IMIX, RIX, and et al. to reduce variation in subjects. The results showed the high relationship between subjective score and indices, especially, the capacitance change and impedance ratio, abs(Z_(1kHz))/abs(Z_(10kHz)). These results indicate electrical impedance may be a promising clinical diagnostic tool to monitor prognosis of skin care for atopic dermatitis. Using developed software application we easily acquired complex impedance data from the instrument and got the analysis results for very kinds of frequency. This may be useful in various bioimpedance studies such as skin cancer assessment or body composition analysis, or etc.

Background: In bioinformatics projects, scientific workflow systems are widely used to manage computational procedures. Full-featured workflow systems have been proposed to fulfil the demand for workflow management. However, such systems tend to be over-weighted for actual bioinformatics practices. We realize that quick deployment of cutting-edge software implementing advanced algorithms and data formats, and continuous adaptation to changes in computational resources and the environment are often prioritized in scientific workflow management. These features have a greater affinity with the agile software development method through iterative development phases after trial and error. Here, we show the application of a scientific workflow system Pwrake to bioinformatics workflows. Pwrake is a parallel workflow extension of Ruby's standard build tool Rake, the flexibility of which has been demonstrated in the astronomy domain. Therefore, we hypothesize that Pwrake also has advantages in actual bioinformatics workflows. Findings. We implemented the Pwrake workflows to process next generation sequencing data using the Genomic Analysis Toolkit (GATK) and Dindel. GATK and Dindel workflows are typical examples of sequential and parallel workflows, respectively. We found that in practice, actual scientific workflow development iterates over two phases, the workflow definition phase and the parameter adjustment phase. We introduced separate workflow definitions to help focus on each of the two developmental phases, as well as helper methods to simplify the descriptions. This approach increased iterative development efficiency. Moreover, we implemented combined workflows to demonstrate modularity of the GATK and Dindel workflows. Conclusions: Pwrake enables agile management of scientific workflows in the bioinformatics domain. Organizations have been relying on collaboration for productivity improvement and knowledge sharing. The first step to foster collaboration in organizations is to make it explicit. With this aim, the Collaboration Maturity Model (CollabMM) was proposed and evaluated. The lessons learned during model applications in previous work pointed out the need to review both the model and its evaluation instruments. A literature review also showed some improvement opportunities. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop a roadmap to highlight the main opportunities of evolution in CollabMM. These opportunities will compose our research agenda in this topic and guide future work.
