Ultrasound kidney image segmentation presents significant challenges due to missing or ambiguous boundaries. In this study, we introduce a coarse-to-refinement approach incorporating four novel aspects. Firstly, we leverage the properties of a principal curve (PC) to automatically fine-tune the curve shape and employ a neural network's learning ability to reduce model error. Secondly, a deep fusion learning network is utilized for the coarse segmentation step, incorporating a parallel architecture to enhance deep-learning performance. Thirdly, addressing the limitation of standard PC-based methods in determining the number of vertices automatically, we propose an automatic searching polygon tracking method using a mean shift clustering-based approach to replace the projection and vertex extension step in standard PC-based methods. Lastly, we develop an explainable mathematical map function for the kidney contour, as denoted by the neural network output (i.e., optimized vertices), which aligns well with the ground truth contour. We conducted various experiments to evaluate our method's performance, demonstrating its effectiveness in ultrasound kidney image segmentation.

Recently, there has been a significant interest in the application of SnS 2 /MoS 2 2D nanostructure composites in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their advantageous conversion, intercalation, and alloying reactions, leading to high capacity during charge and discharge cycles. In this study, we successfully synthesized SnS 2 /MoS 2 composites with a 2D-nanoplate morphology using a single-step hydrothermal method. Specifically, the optimized SnS 2 /MoS 2 -3:1 composite was tested as anodes in coin cell LIBs, demonstrating an impressive capacity of 710 mAh/g at a current density of 500 mA/g, along with outstanding stability (800 cycles) and remarkable rate capability compared to other composites. The excellent electrochemical performance of the SnS 2 /MoS 2 -3:1 composite can be attributed to the moderately coupled SnS 2 and MoS 2 2D-nanosheets, which provide short lithium-ion transportation lengths, low charge transfer resistance, and dominant capacitive behavior.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Urbanization and climate change increase heat stress and health risks in cities, necessitating effective response strategies. Traditional research has focused on thermal sensation in specific locales, overlooking the broad impacts of urban environments and the importance of regional and citizen input in crafting mitigation approaches. This study examines the effects of heat waves in Suwon City, analyzing thermal perception among residents across different urban spaces using citizen science. Data on temperature and subjective heat sensations were collected through homemade sensors over three years. The analysis investigated thermal sensation differences across spatial types— open high rise, open low rise, compact mid-rise, urban park, and lake park—utilizing boxplots, and examined thermal perception variations by age using the R program localized smoothing methodology. The results revealed significant differences in thermal sensation, especially above 32°C, with the highest discomfort reported in lake park areas and the lowest in open high-rise and low-rise zones. An age-related trend showed increased heat sensitivity among the 19–30 age group, decreasing in older participants. These findings underscore the limitations of one-size-fits-all heatwave responses and advocate for customized strategies informed by local conditions and resident experiences, highlighting the value of a bottom-up approach through citizen science. © 2024, The Authors. Recently, many studies have been performed worldwide to extend the persistence of underwater operations by autonomous underwater vehicles. Underwater battery recharging technology is one of the solutions even though challenges still remain. The docking function plays an important role not only in battery recharging but also in other advanced applications, such as intervention. Visual servoing in undersea environments inevitably encounters difficulties in recognizing the environment when captured images are disturbed by noise. This study describes the effective recognition performance and robustness against air bubble disturbances in images captured by a real-time position and orientation (pose) tracking and servoing system using stereo vision for a visual-servoing-type underwater vehicle. The recognition of the vehicle pose based on dynamic images captured by dual video cameras was performed by a real-time multistep genetic algorithm (RM-GA). In previous studies, the docking performance was investigated under the condition that there were no disturbances in the captured images that address image degradation. In this paper, the robustness of the RM-GA against air bubble disturbances was verified through visual servoing and docking experiments in a pool test to confirm that the system can continue to recognize the pose of the 3-D marker and can maintain the desired pose by visual servoing. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed system against real disturbances such as turbidity that may degrade the visibility of the system in the sea was confirmed by conducting the docking experiment in a real sea, having verified the practicality of the proposed method. © 1976-2012 IEEE.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting millions of people worldwide. It is a chronic eye condition that damages the optic nerve and, if left untreated, can lead to vision loss and a decreased quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to explore practical and reliable mechanisms for glaucoma identification. This study systematically reviews deep-learning approaches for glaucoma identification using retinal fundus images from 2018 to 2024. Compared to existing survey studies, we cover the latest research, including several public retinal fundus image datasets, and focus on segmentation, classification based on convolutional neural networks and vision transformers, and explainability. The findings of this study, including comparisons of existing methods and key insights, will assist researchers and developers in identifying the most suitable techniques for glaucoma detection. © 2025 The Authors
