This paper contributes to the field of measuring (un)linkability in communication systems; a subproblem of privacy protection. We propose an attacker state model for attacks on unlinkability of partial identities named linkability graph. It covers probabilistic linkability attacks based on heterogeneous and time-variant characteristics. From our model, we derive linkability measures and argue prospects for safeguard design. Our model reduces space and time complexity compared to other contributions in literature. This enables simulative privacy analysis of complex context-aware systems that employ multiple partial identities per user.

Identity management (IdM) on the application layer improves the usability and security for end users by offering features like single sign-on and attribute provisioning. Unrelated approaches on the network layer introduce identity concepts to solve mobility problems and support multihoming. This paper describes a novel approach to the integration of IdM on the application layer with identity concepts introduced by the host identity protocol (HIP). We propose an integrated architecture combining the advantages of both domains. In this scope, we tackle the mapping between the HIP namespace and user IdM namespace as well as we the management and assignment of user and host identities. The new architecture provides a unified view over user and host identities, enabling the exchange of user and host attributes, while it also provides enhanced security and network features.

Emerging packet-switched transport networks face a continuous growth of link bitrates. Without counter-measures, this translates into a proportional increase of the packet rate and may turn packet processing in network nodes into a bottleneck. In this paper, we investigate one approach to reduce the processing load for a given line rate: increasing the maximum size of packets exchanged between end systems. We first present the fundamental mechanisms along with side effects of increased packet sizes. Then we discuss the dependence of the achievable packet rate reduction on application and protocol stack. Based on a traffic model from the year 2000 and current measurements, we finally evaluate the reduction for web traffic and the Internet protocol stack. Results show that today's web traffic enables higher packet rate reductions than traffic of 2000. A fourfold packet size increase now allows to cut the packet rate by two thirds.

Rain attenuation characteristics of the Ku-band up-link satellite signals are presented for the past four years of 2003-2006 in Japan and Indonesia, using Japan's domestic communication satellite Superbird C that connects Research institute for Sustainable Humanosphere of Kyoto University (RISH) to Equatorial Atmosphere Radar Observatory (EAR). Compared with the rainfall rates with the same time percentages, equivalent path lengths of the satellite signal against the rain area are shown to be reduced down to 2 km at EAR, which is remarkably shorter than those at RISH in Japan. The almost same attenuation values and annual statistics are, however, obtained from the X-band radar observations simultaneously conducted at EAR. This suggests that long-term radar observations of convective clouds are effective to estimate rain attenuation statistics of the satellite signals in the tropical regions. © 2009 SICE.

Silicon nitride microring resonators were demonstrated as chemical sensors. The microring devices,with diameter of 100 μm, were fabricated using complementary metal oxide semiconductor（CMOS）-compatible technology, and a high Q factor of 15000 was realized with free spectrum range（FSR） of 2 nm. The structures were further packaged to perform as chemical sensors, and their functionality was proved using deionized water（DI water）and ethanol as detecting mediums. Lastly, the packaged chips were used to detect glucose solutions with various concentrations, and a detection capability of refractive index change of 10–3refractive index unit（RIU） was obtained.

An anomalous DC-suppression in the small signal response is observed experimentally and its relationship with data pattern inversion is investigated for the first time. With the inclusion of a novel OIL reflection interference model, excellent agreement is obtained between the experiment results and theoretical analysis. © 2009 Optical Society of America.

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) serves as universal platform for fast and standardized creation of mobile services. Typical deployment models for the IMS favor centralized session control and application servers. Furthermore, they rely on sophisticated border elements for, e.g., policy enforcement. One step towards a simpler architecture is the integration of call control, application server, and media functions into border elements. This leads to a distributed IMS architecture with equal processing nodes, which drastically reduces system complexity and scales on functional module instantiation basis. However, the distributed nature of the architecture reduces the statistical gain. In this work, we study a suitable load sharing concept that counters or even over-compensates this problem. In principle, this mechanism realizes one large virtual central server with small control and message overhead. Our simulative evaluation shows the feasibility and performance of our approach.

During the last decades, Ethernet progressively became the most widely used local area network (LAN) technology. It evolved from a bus topology to a micro-segmented network with full duplex links. Apart from LAN installations, Ethernet became also attractive for embedded application areas such as industrial, automotive, and avionics. In these areas, the connectivity between the nodes and the switches results in link harnesses. These harnesses can be bundled together and installed inside ducts. Since not all the links have the same endpoints, some full duplex links leave a duct at points referred to as junction points. In this paper, we propose a simulated annealing based algorithm to optimize the topology design of embedded Ethernet networks. This algorithm finds the (near-)optimal positions of a given number of switches and their connections to given nodes. When we take into account that links are organized into link harnesses and installed into ducts, we have to find also the number of junction points required as well as their optimal positions. For this purpose, we propose two algorithms. Finally, we compare the algorithms in terms of computation time and the quality of the obtained solution, and we highlight the cost benefits of bundling links and installing them into ducts.

Optical switches are important devices in optical communications. A blocking 88 thermo-optic waveguide switch matrix and a rearrangeable nonblocking one are designed and fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. The building block of the matrix is a 22 switch cell with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) configuration, where a general multi-mode interferometer (MMI) serves as splitter/combiners. Nonblocking switch matrix presents excess loss of 10.9dB7tild;13.6dB and crosstalk of -26.6dB7tild;-13.5dB. Blocking one presents excess loss of 6.6dB9.6dB and crosstalk of -25.8dB~-16.8dB. Their extinction ratios vary from 17dB to 25dB. The power consumption of each switch cell is less than *** response time is less than 3s. The power consumption and the response times are much better than that of silica-based or polymer-based switch matrix because of the large thermo-optic coefficient and the high thermal conductivity of silicon. © 2009 SPIE.
