We consider two synchronization problems, namely, state synchronization for networks of identical linear agents, and regulated output synchronization for networks of non-identical linear agents, under a time-varying topology. Agents are assumed to be multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), minimum-phase, right invertible and non-introspective (i.e., they only receive relative output information from their neighboring agents, but lack independent information about their own states or outputs). The time-varying topology is assumed to switch among a finite number of directed graphs containing a directed spanning tree with an arbitrarily a priori given non-vanishing dwell time. Moreover agents are unable to exchange of controller states with their neighboring agents. For solving each problem, we propose a distribute dynamic protocol based on a combination of low-gain and high-gain design techniques.

Occupants' comfort is the primary target in a building operation. However their efforts are often neglected and ruled out from traditional control strategies of energy-efficient building management systems. Occupant-engaged control strategies have recently attracted many research attentions and demonstrated great potentials for energy saving. With them, occupants' behavior is incorporated into the closed-loop control methods in which their initiatives actively contribute to building services and energy utility by explicitly expressing their preferences. This work proposes an occupant-engaged demand response (DR) strategy for building automation in which occupants are actively engaged to adapt their energy consumption in response to incentive opportunities designed by facility managers. A model-based study and a Nash-Equilibrium-based solution are provided to assist facility managers with the design of social incentive policies to promote occupant participation, along with the guarantee of lucrativeness for a DR event.

We determine the size of the elementary quasihole in ν=1/3 and ν=7/3 quantum Hall states via exact-diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations on the sphere and cylinder, using a variety of short- and long-range pinning potentials. The size of the quasihole at filling factor ν=1/3 is estimated to be ≈4ℓB, and that of ν=7/3 is ≈7ℓB, where ℓB is the magnetic length. In contrast, the size of the Laughlin quasihole, expected to capture the basic physics in these two states, is around ≈2.5ℓB. Our work supports the earlier findings that the quasihole in the first excited Landau level is significantly larger than in the lowest Landau level.

Improving the use of energy resources has been a great challenge in the last years. A new complex scenario involving a decentralized bidirectional communication between energy suppliers, distribution system and consumption is nowadays becoming reality. Sometimes cited as the largest and most complex machine ever built, Electric Grids (EG) are been transformed into Smart Grids (SG). Hence, the load forecasting problem has become more difficulty and more autonomous load predictors are needed in this new conjecture. In this paper a novel method, so-called MSES, bio-inspired by Evolution Strategies (ES) combined with Multi-Start (MS) procedure is described. This procedure is mainly based on a self-adaptive algorithm to calibrate the parameters of the fuzzy rules. MSES was implemented in C++ via OptFrame framework. Our main goal is to evaluate the performance of this algorithm in a grid environment. Real data from an electric utility have been used in order to test the proposed methodology. The obtained results are fully described and analyzed.

One of the most considerable concerns in cloud computing environments is ensuring about the security and privacy of stored data in cloud servers. Hence, several data protection tools and techniques have been presented to enhance the reliability in this emerging technology. One of the most challenging issues in this area is classification of stored data to improve the efficiency of data protection procedure and reduce energy consumption by eliminating un-necessary processes. Accordingly, a variable data classification index has been defined and presented in this paper to classify stored data in cloud servers dynamically and increase the efficiency of this process. The suggested index uses three main parameters (Data Confidentiality, Data Integrity, and Data Availability) and several sub-parameters to determine the value of this index dynamically according to the specifications of stored data. The proposed classification index was evaluated by functionality and security parameters. In overall, the results show that the suggested index has considerable benefits in the process of data classification in cloud computing environments.

The silicon-vacancy (SiV−) color center in diamond has attracted attention because of its unique optical properties. It exhibits spectral stability and indistinguishability that facilitate efficient generation of photons capable of demonstrating quantum interference. Here we show optical initialization and readout of electronic spin in a single SiV− center with a spin relaxation time of T1=2.4±0.2 ms. Coherent population trapping (CPT) is used to demonstrate coherent preparation of dark superposition states with a spin coherence time of T2⋆=35±3 ns. This is fundamentally limited by orbital relaxation, and an understanding of this process opens the way to extend coherence by engineering interactions with phonons. Hyperfine structure is observed in CPT measurements with the Si29 isotope which allows access to nuclear spin. These results establish the SiV− center as a solid-state spin-photon interface.

Scaling and correlation of human movements in cyberspace and physical space

Understanding the dynamics of human movements is key to issues of significant current interest such as behavioral prediction, recommendation, and control of epidemic spreading. We collect and analyze big data sets of human movements in both cyberspace (through browsing of websites) and physical space (through mobile towers) and find a superlinear scaling relation between the mean frequency of visit 〈f〉 and its fluctuation σ:σ∼〈f〉β with β≈1.2. The probability distribution of the visiting frequency is found to be a stretched exponential function. We develop a model incorporating two essential ingredients, preferential return and exploration, and show that these are necessary for generating the scaling relation extracted from real data. A striking finding is that human movements in cyberspace and physical space are strongly correlated, indicating a distinctive behavioral identifying characteristic and implying that the behaviors in one space can be used to predict those in the other.

Query expansion is a commonly used technique to address the problem of short and under-specified search queries in information retrieval. Traditional query expansion frameworks return static results, whereas user's information needs is dynamics in nature. User's search goal, even for the same query, may be different at different instances. This often leads to poor coherence between traditional query expansion and user's search goal resulting poor retrieval performance. In this study, we observe that user's search pattern is influenced by his/her recent searches in many search instances. We further propose a query expansion framework which explores user's real time implicit feedback provided at the time of search to determine user's search context and identify relevant query expansion terms. From extensive experiments, it is evident that the proposed query expansion framework adapts to the changing needs of user's information need. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
