Non-Gaussian Assessment of the Benefits from Improved control

control quality significantly contributes to the process technical and financial performance. Productivity, environmental issues and energy management push systems towards their technological constraints calling for better regulation closer to process limitations. Any control improvement initiative should be predated with the estimation of the potential benefits associated with control rehabilitation project. The assessment is based on the appropriate measures. Classical methods are based on Gaussian approach. However, investigation of industrial data frequently is not compliant with normal assumption on control signals. This paper proposes approach using non-Gaussian probabilistic distributions like Cauchy, Laplace and Lévy. The methodology is illustrated on the exemplary industrial data. © 2017

Predictive Fault Tolerant control for LPV systems using model reference

The present work proposes a Fault Tolerant control (FTC) methodology for nonlinear discrete-time systems that can be modeled as Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) systems. The proposed approach relies on the modeling of faults as additional scheduling parameters of the LPV model for the controlled system and it uses a triple loop architecture. The inner control loop is designed by means of the standard H2/H∞ control methodologies based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The design takes into account a prespecified set of faults and the ranges of their magnitudes that are wanted to be tolerated and it assumes the availability of on-line fault estimations provided by a Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) module. The resulting controller tries to compensate the system faults in order to maintain a satisfactory closed-loop dynamic performance, but it does not take into account possible system input and state constraints associated to actuator saturation and other physical limitations. Thus, an intermediate control loop determines the actual compensation feasibility using set invariance theory. And, when it is needed, it applies suitable additive predictive control actions that enlarge the invariant set, trying to assure that the current state remains inside the enlarged invariant set. Finally, an outer loop implements a model REFERENCE control that allows REFERENCE tracking. The use of the proposed FTC methodology is illustrated through its application to the well-known quadruple tank system benchmark. © 2015

A two-stage algorithm for scheduling preemptive jobs on parallel machines with minimum makespan criterion and requirements for limited renewable resources and existence of sequence dependent setup times is investigated. In the first stage of the algorithm a set of best elementary feasible plans is obtained through column generation. For the second stage we compare genetic algorithms for sequencing elementary plans, where various approximate criterions for calculation minimum makespan are used. © 2008 by International Federation for Information Processing.

A planner for a self adaptable and reconfigurable fixture system is proposed. The system is composed of mobile support agents that support thin sheet metal parts to minimize part dimensional deformation during drilling and milling operations. Compliant sheet metal parts are widely used in various manufacturing processes including automotive and aerospace industries. The main role of the planner is to generate an admissible plan of relocation of the mobile agents. It has to find the admissible locations for the supporting heads that provide continuous support in close proximity to the tool and trajectories of the mobile bases characterized by very high speeds during the relocation phases.

Power saving techniques based on dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) allow to optimize performance of processors capable of operating in more and more energy-efficient operating modes. In this paper we propose a new design of DVFS-based self-tuning CPU performance controller for the Linux kernel. The controller autonomously adapts to currently observed model of CPU load dynamics and adjusts CPU performance level to compensate for load variations while optimizing energy efficiency of performed operations. © 2019 IEEE.

In the MIMO control system it is often sufficient for some of the output variables to be constrained instead of stabilised. Employing a predictive control algorithm, in which constraints can be easily taken into consideration, is natural in such cases. As a result, in comparison with the standard control problem formulation, in which all relevant output variables are stabilised, the obtained problem has more degrees of freedom. They can be used for improving process economic efficiency. It is demonstrated in the paper on the example of a highly nonlinear MIMO control plant. In order to use the aforementioned feature the multilayer structure with different number of manipulated inputs and controlled outputs is investigated. © 2007 IFAC.

The paper is concerned with on-line process steady-state optimization under uncertainty. In such cases a single process model optimization can yield a set-point far away from the one optimal for the true process. The way to improve the set-point is to apply steady-state feedback, i.e., an iterative optimizing algorithm utilizing new measurements available after every subsequent set-point application. Integrated System Optimization and Parameter Estimation (ISOPE) method yields subsequent set-points converging to the true process optimum, despite uncertainty. It requires, at every iteration, model parameters to be updated under certain additional equality constraint. The aim of the paper is to present how the ISOPE can be redesigned resulting in a new structure without this constraint. Moreover, the parameter estimation itself is then not necessary at every iteration, although possible when reasonable. Copyright © 2002 IFAC.

Mobile wireless ad hoc network (MANET) becomes increasingly popular in responding to emergency situation. In this paper a possibility to support rescue team in monitoring heavy gas cloud with MANET comprised of mobile sensing devices is investigated. In the view of the current state of research, two methods for controlling mobile sensing devices during MANET self-organization are presented. The first one is based on a greedy approach whereas the second on a repulsion from the estimated centroid of a cloud and other nodes. Various variants of both methods are considered and their efficiency in terms of detection quality and energy saving is evaluated with MobASim simulation software. The results are discussed and one variant is chosen as the basis for the future research. © 2016 Polish Information Processing Society.

The aim of the paper is to present the place, role and mutual interaction of advanced control algorithms and on-line set-point optimization in multilayer process control structures. First, such a structure resulting from a functional decomposition is presented. The role and selected realizations of advanced control algorithms, in particular mostly applied now MPC ones, at direct control and constraint control layers is discussed. Then possible solutions to on-line set-point optimization, depending of disturbance dynamics, are presented: dynamic set-point optimization including involved structures based on temporal decomposition, and steady-state set-point optimization for cases with disturbance dynamics both much slower and comparable with the process dynamics. For the last case, important in industrial practice, different structures of interaction and even integration of MPC and steady-state optimization are discussed. The topics are illustrated by briefly presented examples, selected from given references. © 2007 IFAC.
