Preparing future teachers for diverse schools in an online learning community: Perceptions and practice

This study provides an example of one institution's efforts to design coursework that meets the simultaneous challenges of supporting the aims of increasing access to online courses and simultaneously better preparing teachers to work in diverse classrooms. Based on online pre- and post-surveys and monthly open-ended writing prompts administered to students in an introductory teacher preparation course, the study sought to discover students' motivation to select online or blended courses, student perspectives on the benefits and challenges to taking this course online, characteristics of the learning environment that promoted or interfered with students' learning, instructor's perspective of learners' reaction to topics addressing K-12 classroom diversity, and the impact of an online format on students' discussions of issues related to learner diversity. Findings suggest that online courses should include a classroom placement component in which students experience a diverse classroom in order to best prepare students for diverse teaching assignments. Thus, the best online teacher preparation courses maybe those that blend virtual and face-to-face interaction rather than being strictly online. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This author introduces a framework to guide researchers into a process of racial and cultural awareness, consciousness, and positionality as they conduct education research. The premise of the argument is that dangers seen, unseen, and unforeseen can emerge for researchers when they do not pay careful attention to their own and others’ racialized and cultural systems of coming to know, knowing, and experiencing the world. education research is used as an analytic site for discussion throughout this article, but the framework may be transferable to other academic disciplines. After a review of literature on race and culture in education and an outline of central tenets of critical race theory, a nonlinear framework is introduced that focuses on several interrelated qualities: researching the self, researching the self in relation to others, engaged reflection and representation, and shifting from the self to system.

Mothers' parenting and young economically disadvantaged children's relational and overt bullying

We examined links between mothers' parenting and children's relational bullying and overt bullying in a sample of children attending a Head Start program. Mothers completed surveys and face-to-face interviews. Head Start teachers completed assessments on children. Results indicated that a small percentage of children in the sample was rated by teachers as engaging in relational bullying "frequently to almost always," and slightly over half of the sample was rated by teachers as engaging in relational bullying "occasionally to about half of the time." Similar results were found for the frequency with which children engaged in overt physical bullying. Regarding mothers' parenting, maternal empathy was most strongly correlated with both children's relational bullying and overt physical bullying. In addition, mothers' inappropriate developmental expectations for children and mothers' need to exert power over children rather than grant them independence were related to children's relational bullying. A composite variable for mothering predicted 11% of the variance in children's relational bullying. No gender differences were found for children's relational bullying and children's overt bullying. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

Infusing technology into the elementary classroom: A school/university partnership model

A project to infuse technology into elementary school and university classrooms was implemented in two Professional development Schools (PDS). The ultimate goal of Project PICT (Pre-service Infusion of Computer Technology) was to impact the learning and achievement of elementary students by equipping pre-service teachers with the necessary skills to fully utilize modern technology in their future classrooms. As such, teams of elementary and pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and university faculty from the college of Arts and Sciences received technology training and planned for infusion during the initial phase of the project. After four months of training, teams implemented infusion plans in their classrooms and produced artifacts which can be seen at the project's Web site: http://***/colleges/edhd/LPS/EDFI/PICT. The article discusses the project and its effects on one PDS. It describes specific activities implemented and initial impacts upon elementary and university classrooms. It also addresses strengths and drawbacks of technology infusion through this model. © 2002 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.

Children-in-families-in-communities are embedded in social realities that provide the matrix in which they grow, learn and develop and against which they test their identity. To view children-in-context it is necessary to shift from a dualist perspective that sees children and context as two separate entities to a view that sees the two as one at the interface of an ongoing transformational relationship. Childhood viewed in specific contexts, cultural, historical and social, expose the extent to which this is true. A contextual view acknowledges the structures, the forces and the processes in societies that impact on the interactions and regularities in children's daily lives. In a number of societies a deficit model of children is inherent in these interactions and regularities. This deficit model includes discrimination on the basis of age that places them lowest in the pecking order and denies them rights. Children, more than any other group, endure the added burdens of poverty and violence that further marginalize and alienate them from society. Childhood is not something to grow out of, childhood is life itself. Social interactions that acknowledge and respect children's experiences as valid can potentially reconstruct societal views towards children. To begin this process and to counter the present discriminatory discourse, research that gave children a voice to speak about their own experiences of violence is reported. This research recognizes that in the land of the small, it is the small who are wise.

Sorting laundry: Categorization strategy application to an authentic learning activity by children with autism

The current study replicates and extends learning strategy research investigating the effects of categorization strategy training on the abilities of children with autism to accurately complete uni-, bi-, and tridimensional sorting tasks. This study extends prior research by (a) using authentic sorting activities for categorization strategy training, (b) using both low- and high-functioning children with autism, and (c) assessing categorization strategy generalization across multiple settings and teachers using untrained sorting items. Five children with autism (i.e., two low- and three high-functioning) showed strategy acquisition and generalization during training. Four children (i.e., one low- and three high-functioning) showed strategy maintenance 4 months later. The other child showed uni- and bidimensional strategy maintenance 4 months later;however, tridimensional strategy maintenance was unconfirmed. Thus results from the current study substantiate the worth of categorization strategy training for five children with autism.
