Robustness and reliability are two key requirements for developing practical quantum control systems. The purpose of this paper is to design a coherent feedback controller for a class of linear quantum systems suffering from Markovian jumping faults so that the closed-loop quantum system has both fault tolerance and H∞ disturbance attenuation performance. This paper first extends the physical realization conditions from the time-invariant case to the time-varying case for linear stochastic quantum systems. By relating the fault tolerant H∞ control problem to the dissipation properties and the solutions of Riccati differential equations, an H∞ controller for the quantum system is then designed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In particular, an algorithm is employed to introduce additional noises and to construct the corresponding input matrices to ensure the physical realizability of the quantum controller. For real applications of the developed fault-tolerant control strategy, we present a linear quantum system example from quantum optics, where the amplitude of the pumping field randomly jumps among different values. It is demonstrated that a quantum H∞ controller can be designed and implemented using some basic optical components to achieve the desired control goal. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Edge computing is a promising paradigm that can boost the performance of novel mobile applications and energize the real-time governance of Internet-of-Things (IoT) big data. In edge computing, mobile application vendors are allowed to employ edge resources to speed up end-users' applications in an elastic and on-demand manner. However, due to the complex geographical distribution of edge servers and users, how to decide the most appropriate destination edge server to hire and how to decide the corresponding user-server allocation plan with as-low-as-possible monetary cost are the key problems for application vendors. Instead of assuming a simultaneous-batch-arrival pattern of incoming users and considering static optimization of the Edge User Allocation (EUA) problem by most existing studies, in this paper, we consider an online EUA problem where users' arrival and departure follow a general pattern. We take the long-term edge user allocation rate and edge server leasing cost as scheduling targets and propose a decentralized collaborative and fuzzy-control-based approach to yielding real-time user-edge-server allocation schedules. In this approach, edge users are allowed to independently make their own allocation decision only based on local information (i.e., the status of nearby edge servers). Experiments on real-world edge datasets demonstrate our approach outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in terms of long-term allocation rate and system cost.

Adaptive NMS: Refining pedestrian detection in a crowd

Pedestrian detection in a crowd is a very challenging issue. This paper addresses this problem by a novel NonMaximum Suppression (NMS) algorithm to better refine the bounding boxes given by detectors. The contributions are threefold: (1) we propose adaptive-NMS, which applies a dynamic suppression threshold to an instance, according to the target density;(2) we design an efficient subnetwork to learn density scores, which can be conveniently embedded into both the single-stage and two-stage detectors;and (3) we achieve state of the art results on the CityPersons and CrowdHuman benchmarks. Adaptive unimodal cost volume filtering for deep stereo matching

State-of-the-art deep learning based stereo matching approaches treat disparity estimation as a regression problem, where loss function is directly defined on true disparities and their estimated ones. However, disparity is just a byproduct of a matching process modeled by cost volume, while indirectly learning cost volume driven by disparity regression is prone to overfitting since the cost volume is under constrained. In this paper, we propose to directly add constraints to the cost volume by filtering cost volume with unimodal distribution peaked at true disparities. In addition, variances of the unimodal distributions for each pixel are estimated to explicitly model matching uncertainty under different contexts. The proposed architecture achieves state-of-the-art performance on Scene Flow and two KITTI stereo benchmarks. In particular, our method ranked the 1st place of KITTI 2012 evaluation and the 4th place of KITTI 2015 evaluation (recorded on 2019.8.20). Previous works on personalized recommendation mostly emphasize modeling peoples＇ diversity in potential fa- vorites into a uniform recommender. However, these recommenders always ignore the heterogeneity of users at an individual level. In this study, we propose an individualized recommender that can satisfy every user with a customized parameter. Experimental results on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that the individualized recommender can significantly improve the accuracy of recommendation. The work highlights the importance of the user heterogeneity in recommender design.

Mental stress is a critical factor affecting one's physical and mental well-being. At the early stage, the effect of stress is often underestimated, while it usually leads to serious issue Lateran. Therefore, it is crucial to detect stress before it evolves into severe problems. Traditional stress detection methods are based on either questionnaires or professional devices, which are time-consuming, costly and intrusive. With the popularity of smartphones embedded with a rich set of sensors, which can capture people's context, such as movement, sound, location and so on, it is an alternative way to access people's behavior by smartphones. Through an empirical study, this paper proposes an automatic and non-intrusive stress detection framework based on smartphone sensing data. First, we construct various discriminative features from multi-modality phone sensing data, in which both absolute and relative features are considered to make the model more personalized. Then, to tackle the challenge of label insufficiency, we further develop a co-training based method for stress level classification. Finally, we evaluate our model based on an open dataset, and the experimental results verify its advantages over other baselines.

Master stability functions for complete, intralayer, and interlayer synchronization in multiplex networks of coupled Rössler oscillators

Synchronization phenomena are of broad interest across disciplines and increasingly of interest in a multiplex network setting. For the multiplex network of coupled Rössler oscillators, here we show how the master stability function, a celebrated framework for analyzing synchronization on a single network, can be extended to certain classes of multiplex networks with different intralayer and interlayer coupling functions. We derive three master stability equations that determine, respectively, the necessary regions of complete synchronization, intralayer synchronization, and interlayer synchronization. We calculate these three regions explicitly for the case of a two-layer network of Rössler oscillators and show that the overlap of the regions determines the type of synchronization achieved. In particular, if the interlayer or intralayer coupling function is such that the interlayer or intralayer synchronization region is empty, complete synchronization cannot be achieved regardless of the coupling strength. Furthermore, for any network structure, the occurrence of intralayer and interlayer synchronization depends mainly on the coupling functions of nodes within a layer and across layers, respectively. Our mathematical analysis requires that the intralayer and interlayer supra-Laplacians commute. But, we show this is only a sufficient, and not necessary, condition and that the results can be applied more generally.

With the development of sensor networks in the past two decades, synchronization of complex dynamical networks has received an increasing attention and has been widely studied both in theoretical research and in practical applications. This paper concerns the synchronization protocol design problem of nonlinear dynamical complex networks with stochastic ***-integral(PI) control protocols are designed to guarantee that complex dynamical networks with stochastic coupling can achieve global synchronization. Sufficient condition for choice of PI control gains are derived. Numerical example is included to demonstrate the efficiency of the theoretical results.

Impact of temperature and relative humidity on the transmission of COVID-19: A modeling study in China and the United States

Objectives We aim to assess the impact of temperature and relative humidity on the transmission of COVID-19 across communities after accounting for community-level factors such as demographics, socioeconomic status, and human mobility status. Design A retrospective cross-sectional regression analysis via the Fama-MacBeth procedure is adopted. Setting We use the data for COVID-19 daily symptom-onset cases for 100 Chinese cities and COVID-19 daily confirmed cases for 1,005 U.S. counties. Participants A total of 69,498 cases in China and 740,843 cases in the U.S. are used for calculating the effective reproductive numbers. Primary outcome measures Regression analysis of the impact of temperature and relative humidity on the effective reproductive number (R value). Results Statistically significant negative correlations are found between temperature/relative humidity and the effective reproductive number (R value) in both China and the U.S. Conclusions Higher temperature and higher relative humidity potentially suppress the transmission of COVID-19. Specifically, an increase in temperature by 1 degree Celsius is associated with a reduction in the R value of COVID-19 by 0.026 (95% CI [-0.0395,-0.0125]) in China and by 0.020 (95% CI [-0.0311, -0.0096]) in the U.S.;an increase in relative humidity by 1% is associated with a reduction in the R value by 0.0076 (95% CI [-0.0108,-0.0045]) in China and by 0.0080 (95% CI [-0.0150,-0.0010]) in the U.S. Therefore, the potential impact of temperature/relative humidity on the effective reproductive number alone is not strong enough to stop the pandemic.
