A status report is given on Esprit Project p2615: intelligent training systems in industrial environment (ITSIE). This project, started in March 1990, aims to: investigate intelligent training systems based on ITS concepts; develop a set of generic tools for domain knowledge, tutoring and user modelling; develop a generic architecture and associated communication protocols for ITSIE; establish a methodology for matching training objectives to generic solutions; validate the tools and methodology through two realistic demonstrators. The two demonstrators of the project are complementary with respect to the training and the domains. They are: training of electrical distribution network personnel in the correct online maintenance procedures and training of operators of a fossil-fuel power station.< >

Motion planning is studied in a time-varying environment. Each obstacle is a convex polygon that moves in a fixed direction at a constant speed. The robot is a convex polygon that is subject to a speed bound. A method of determining whether or not there is a translational collision-free motion for a polygonal robot from an initial position to a final position and of planning such a motion, if it exists, is presented. The method makes use of the concept of configuration spaces and accessibility. An algorithm is given for motion planning in such an environment, and its time complexity is analyzed.< >

HIRECS: HYPERCUBE IMPLEMENTATION OF RELAXATION-BASED CIRCUIT SIMULATION

Circuit simulation is a highly compute-intensive task as it involves solving thousands of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) describing the VLSI circuit under consideration. This paper describes an effort towards speeding up this task using a hypercube-based architecture. The paper focusses on the design and development of HIRECS (Hypercube Implementation of RElaxation-Based Circuit Simulation). HIRECS is based on the relaxation approach of solving the ODEs describing the circuit. The natural decomposition of the problem makes the relaxation algorithms amenable to parallel implementation. HIRECS employs the Waveform Relaxation (WR) algorithm. The special feature of WR algorithm is that the latency of the circuit can be exploited better, effecting a saving in the total computation time. The concept of ’windowing’ has been incorporated in HIRECS to effect a saving in the memory requirement. Another important feature of HIRECS is a novel synchronization scheme called partial synchronization. HIRECS runs on a DEC-1090 system and is developed using SIMULA. Performance studies of HIRECS based on parameters such as speedup, efficiency, and utilization of processors have been carried out. The performance evaluation of HIRECS in the simulation of some bench mark circuits like inverter chains and multiplexers indicates that a significant speedup, almost linear, can be obtained using a hypercube. For circuits with large number of nodes, such an implementation can result in tremendous saving in the computation time.

This paper describes the meta-level control system of a program (Dominic) for parametric design of mechanical components by iterative redesign. We view parametric design as search, and thus Dominic is a hill climbing algorithm. However, from experience with Dominic we concluded that modeling engineering design as hill climbing has several limitations. Therefore, a need for meta-level control knowledge exists. To implement meta-level control, we have taken the approach of dynamically modifying the way hill climbing is performed for this task, rather than requiring the addition of domain-specific control knowledge. We have identified the limitations of hill climbing, constructed various generic hill climbing strategies, and developed a me&t-strategy to guide the application of the strategies. The program monitors its own performance for unproductive efforts and selects among different strategies to improve its performance as it designs. This met&level control significantly improves the performance of the program over the performance of an earlier version. © 1988, AAAI (***). All rights reserved.

PATCH: Empowering Large Language Model with Programmer-Intent Guidance and Collaborative-Behavior Simulation for Automatic Bug Fixing

Bug fixing holds significant importance in software development and maintenance. Recent research has made substantial strides in exploring the potential of large language models (LLMs) for automatically resolving software bugs. However, a noticeable gap in existing approaches lies in the oversight of collaborative facets intrinsic to bug resolution, treating the process as a single-stage endeavor. Moreover, most approaches solely take the buggy code snippet as input for LLMs during the patch generation stage. To mitigate the aforementioned limitations, we introduce a novel stage-wise framework named PATCH. Specifically, we first augment the buggy code snippet with corresponding dependence context and intent information to better guide LLMs in generating the correct candidate patches. Additionally, by taking inspiration from bug management practices, we decompose the bug-fixing task into four distinct stages: bug reporting, bug diagnosis, patch generation, and patch verification. These stages are performed interactively by LLMs, aiming to simulate the collaborative behavior of programmers during the resolution of software bugs. By harnessing these collective contributions, PATCH effectively enhances the bug-fixing capability of LLMs. We implement PATCH by employing the powerful dialogue-based LLM ChatGPT. Our evaluation on the widely used bug-fixing benchmark BFP demonstrates that PATCH has achieved better performance than state-of-the-art LLMs.

This book and its sister volumes constitute the Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2006) held in Chengdu in southwestern China during May 28–31, 2006. ISNN 2006 received 2472 submissions from authors in 43 countries and regions (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Qatar, Turkey, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Demark, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Ireland, Canada, USA, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Nigeria, and Tunisia) across six continents (Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and Oceania). Based on rigorous reviews, 616 high-quality papers were selected for publication in the proceedings with the acceptance rate being less than 25%. The papers are organized in 27 cohesive sections covering all major topics of neural network research and development. In addition to the numerous contributed papers, ten distinguished scholars gave plenary speeches (Robert J. Marks II, Erkki Oja, Marios M. Polycarpou, Donald C. Wunsch II, Zongben Xu, and Bo Zhang) and tutorials (Walter J. Freeman, Derong Liu, Paul J. Werbos, and Jacek M. Zurada).

Line Drawing Guided Progressive Inpainting for Mural Damage

Mural image inpainting is far less explored compared to its natural image counterpart and remains largely unsolved. Most existing image-inpainting methods tend to take the target image as the only input and directly repair the damage to generate a visually plausible result. These methods obtain high performance in restoration or completion of some pre-defined objects, e.g., human face, fabric texture, and printed texts, etc., however, are not suitable for repairing murals with varying subjects and large damaged areas. Moreover, due to discrete colors in paints, mural inpainting may suffer from apparent color bias. To this end, in this paper, we propose a line drawing guided progressive mural inpainting method. It divides the inpainting process into two steps: structure reconstruction and color correction, implemented by a structure reconstruction network (SRN) and a color correction network (CCN), respectively. In structure reconstruction, SRN utilizes the line drawing as an assistant to achieve large-scale content authenticity and structural stability. In color correction, CCN operates a local color adjustment for missing pixels which reduces the negative effects of color bias and edge jumping. The proposed approach is evaluated against the current state-of-the-art image inpainting methods. Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in mural image inpainting. The codes and data are available at https://***/qinnzou/mural-image-inpainting.
