Exploring the economic benefits and stability of renewable energy microgrids with controllable power sources under carbon fee and random outage scenarios

This study investigates the application models and economic benefits of controllable power sources in microgrids under various carbon fee scenarios using a convenience store in Taiwan as a case study. Convenience stores are characterized by their high energy consumption and heavy reliance on stable power supply, and therefore underscore the importance of optimizing microgrid configurations to reduce operational costs and carbon emissions. This research adopts an innovative approach by integrating renewable-energy hybrid systems and advanced energy-storage technologies. Optimization simulations combining wind power, solar energy, and energy-storage systems are conducted using different HomerPro dispatch strategies, considering fixed parameters such as the nominal discount rate (2.125 %), inflation rate (1.37 %), and the annual average rate increase of Taiwan Power Company. These simulations evaluate their impact on system performance to enhance overall system efficiency and stability. During grid outages, self-generated renewable energy and storage systems may be insufficient to meet load demands, thus necessitating backup diesel generators. In this study, the formulated optimization problem explicitly aims to minimize the net present cost (NPC), which includes fuel costs, carbon emission fees, and capital investments, subject to feasible constraints such as power balance, battery state-of-charge (soC) limits, and equipment capacity restrictions. Consequently, under these conditions, HomerPro’s simulation automatically dispatches the generator only when the available renewable energy generation and battery storage capacities are inadequate to supply the critical loads, thereby effectively minimizing overall operational costs and carbon emissions. The simulation result demonstrates that configuring generators for low-frequency use as backup power sources is an economically viable option. This paper proposes a measurement technique for an integrated complex filter. The proposed method is based on two measurement methods with integrated circuitry for calibration. It is accomplished by applying square waves to an FUT (Filter Under Test) instead of sinusoidal waves or by superposing transfer characteristics obtained by applying a single sinusoidal wave to an FUT. In both of the above methods, the output signal connected to the external measurement equipment via a 50 Ω coaxial cable and so on. In this case, the output signal of the FUT should be amplified by internal or external amplifiers, which degrades the response. However, it is cancelled out by the proposed calibration circuitry with some analog switches. In addition to the above, for the RC polyphase filter, the source resistance and the load capacitance degrade the measurement results and their effect is discussed. The validity of the proposal is confirmed through computer simulation for a third-order RCPF whose passband is 8–40 MHz fabricated by Phenitec 0.6 µm CMOs process. It is shown that the measurement error is −1.10 dB for the square-wave method and −1.00 dB and −0.43 degrees for the superposition method at 40 MHz. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Eye-tracking studies focused on art galleries and museums within the realm of Instagram, especially in the Indonesian context, are notably scant. This investigation elucidates the user interaction and experience of the art gallery’s Instagram account, @galerinasional. Employing a quantitative approach, we implemented eye-tracking experiments using the well-known online eye-tracking software RealEye. The study participants were followers of the National Gallery of Indonesia’s (Galnas) Instagram profile, seven women and three men, in two age brackets: 18–24 years (n = 5) and 25–34 years (n = 5). The experimental protocol required participants to execute five tasks centered on locating exhibition details and artwork on the Galnas Instagram platform, with a duration of 100 s allocated to each task. The Participant Quality Grade (PQG), examination duration, optimal browser dimensionality, K-factor mean, gaze and fixation frequencies, and heat maps were determined for the participants. The key findings are as follows. (1) The participants’ PQG scores were predominantly between 4 and 6. (2) Investigative browsing typically exceeded the 100-s limit. (3) The consensus on the ideal browser dimensions hovered around 1,368.6 × 814.8 px. (4) The K-factor mean across participants tended toward K > 0. (5) The average gaze occurrence was 27 items per second for most participants. (6) A noticeable disparity in fixation counts was observed between the two age groups, with individuals aged 25–34 demonstrating prolonged engagement with Galnas’ content. A self-Healing WDM Access Network with Protected Fiber and FsO Link Paths Effective Against Fiber Breaks

In this article, an additional protected fiber and free-space optical (FsO) link path is proposed, to provide self-healing capabilities for protection against fiber faults in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems. The new optical line terminal (OLT), remote node (RN), and optical network unit (ONU) in the presented PON architecture result in self-protective function against fiber breakpoints. In the measurement, 25 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation was applied on each WDM channel to assess the downstream and upstream signals after 25 km single-mode fiber (sMF) and 25 km sMF + 2 m FsO connections, respectively. In addition to using protected fiber paths for self-healing operations. This PON system can also apply the FsO link method. The measured bit error rate (BER) for all downstream and upstream traffic was maintained below 3.8 × 10−3 with forward error correction (FEC). The detected optical power sensitivity of the proposed self-restorative fiber- and FsO-based WDM-PON for downstream and upstream WDM signals ranged from −33.5 to −28.5 dBm and from −33 to −28.5 dBm, respectively, and the corresponding power budgets of the downstream and upstream WDM signals were between 29.5 and 30.5 dB and 33 and 38 dB, respectively. © 2025 by the authors.

Continuous blood pressure monitoring is crucial because of its dynamic nature, influenced by factors such as physical activity and mental stress. Although cuffless blood pressure estimation is a promising technique for continuous monitoring, its accuracy during drastic fluctuations, especially during exercise, remains insufficiently validated. In this study, we evaluated a simple Pulse Arrival Time based blood pressure estimation method and several improved methods for sharp fluctuations induced by exercise. sixteen subjects in the experiment, with data from 13 valid for analysis. The proposed method achieved an average correlation of 0.527 in systolic blood pressure, suggesting that cuffless blood pressure estimation could be applied to estimate continuous blood pressure variability during exercise. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to springer Nature switzerland AG 2025.

This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of an RC polyphase filter (RCPF) and circuitry for measuring its frequency characteristics. The integrated circuit is fabricated on a 0.6 µm CMOs process and its supply voltage is 5 V. The integrated circuit includes a filter under test (FUT), a four-phase square wave generator, several analog switches and differential amplifiers to amplify the high-impedance signals of the RCPF. This FUT is a third-order complex RCPF whose passband is 8 − 40 MHz. This paper describes the design of these circuits in detail. This integrated circuit can select two measurement methods by means of external control signals. The first method uses a four-phase square wave. The frequency characteristics are measured by using an on-chip four-phase square wave generator driven by an external clock generator and by a spectrum analyzer tuned to the fundamental frequency. The second method uses an external network analyzer. Furthermore, this integrated circuit is equipped with a calibration circuit to measure the frequency characteristics of the circuitry except FUT by passing through the input / output signals of the FUT. As a result, the frequency characteristics of the FUT itself can be accurately measured. The effectiveness is confirmed through evaluation of the fabricated integrated circuit. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This study presents a comprehensive strategy for enhancing the sustainability and dissemination of biogas systems in rural and small island communities, with Manado City, Indonesia, as a focal case. The symbiosis Bioenergy (symnergy) model, operational since 2018, converts organic waste into renewable energy while addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges. Employing a system Dynamics (sD) approach, the research evaluated three scenarios—Business-As-Usual (BAU), Moderate, and Optimistic—over a decade (2023–2033). Quantitative results show that under the BAU scenario, sustainability remains critically low at 28.61%, categorized as "Less sustainable." The Moderate scenario significantly improves to 71.62%, classified as "sufficiently sustainable," while the Optimistic scenario reaches 78.90%, rated as "sustainable." These results underline the transformative impact of strategic policies, such as community-based training programs, trust-building initiatives, and government subsidies, which drive a 63.1% increase in sustainability from BAU to Optimistic scenarios. Moreover, these interventions reduce CO₂ emissions, improve waste management, and stimulate economic resilience. This study's novelty lies in integrating socio-economic and environmental factors within a dynamic sD framework, offering actionable and scalable policy recommendations. The findings provide clear evidence of the critical role of community empowerment and strategic interventions in achieving long-term sustainability for biogas systems, filling key gaps in existing literature and setting a benchmark for renewable energy strategies in similar regions globally. © 2025 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

As bullying rapidly spreads in schools, many parents are becoming increasingly concerned about their children being subjected to bullying by peers, which could negatively impact their physical and mental health. This paper proposes an abusive language detection system that combines Mel-frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCC) speech features with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Audio files which contain daily abusive phrases in the Minnan dialect are initially preprocesses to eliminate non-speech interference. subsequently, the MFCC algorithm is applied to extract speech features that closely capture auditory characteristics. The CNN classification model is trained to learn the MFCC features and classify the phrases into their respective categories. Experimental results indicate that the CNN model achieves an average recognition accuracy of 91.9%. Finally, the CNN model was deployed on an embedded platform, where it achieves an average recognition time of 0.54 seconds per phrase and an average recognition accuracy of 86.25%.

In this paper, the design of the control board and human-machine interface for imitation and 3D operation is implemented with the DOBOT arm mechanism. The coordinate array data of glyphs written on the tablet is captured by the CCD camera. The glyph learning and imitation are implemented by the center point and radius estimation algorithms. In addition, the 3D position and operation procedure planned on the computer window interface will also be converted into a tracking coordinate array and procedure control code. They will be transmitted to the ARM chip on the control board via WIFI or UsB, for parallel-quadrilateral link calculation and coordinate conversion of the track, to get the motor control command of the robot arm. The automated monitoring system proposed in this paper is the result of completely self-design and development on software, firmware and hardware. Rotational control accuracy of 0.01125 deg/pulse and writing error of less than 0.5 mm can be achieved. © 2019 IEEE.

This study delves into the economic feasibility of various energy system combinations under the influence of carbon fee policies, using a convenience store located in the Changbin Industrial Park as a representative case. The primary focus is analyzing the intricate relationship between the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) and carbon fees. In light of the growing importance of sustainable energy practices, this research explores how different combinations of renewable energy sources and storage systems can be optimized within the context of evolving carbon fee regulations. The findings underscore the pivotal role of carbon fees as a decisive factor in determining the economic viability of microgrid systems. specifically, when the carbon fee escalates to NT$3000/tCO2e, certain system configurations, such as GPWL (Grid-Photovoltaic-Wind-Lithium) and GPWF (Grid-Photovoltaic-Wind-Flow Battery), emerge as economically viable options. However, the feasibility of these systems is significantly influenced by the prevailing costs of green electricity procurement, which can either enhance or limit their attractiveness. Moreover, the study introduces a regression analysis model capable of accurately predicting fluctuations in energy costs across different carbon fee scenarios. This model provides a robust analytical tool for decision-makers, enabling them to anticipate the financial implications of policy changes on energy systems. The insights derived from this research are particularly valuable for businesses and policymakers, offering a hopeful vision of a future with cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions. © 2024 IEEE.
