Experimental analysis on calcination and carbonation process in calcium looping for CO_(2) capture: study case of cement plants in Indonesia

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))is the main contributor to greenhouse gases that affect global *** industrial sector is the third largest producer of CO_(2) and the cement industry is one of the industries that consistently produces the most significant CO_(2) *** cement industry produces 5-8% of global CO_(2) *** methods for reducing specific CO_(2) emissions have been reported in the cement industry,including calcium looping,which uses the reversible reaction between calcination[calcium carbonate(CaCO_(3))decomposition]and carbonation[CO_(2) capture by calcium oxide(CaO)].This work investigates calcium looping employing limestone obtained directly from several cement factories in Indonesia to observe the carbon-absorption characteristics of limestone from different mining *** experiment was carried out using a tube furnace equipped with a controlled atmospheric condition that functions as a calciner and a carbonator.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray spec-troscopy characterization were conducted to analyse the changes in the experimental *** results demonstrated that the reactor configuration was capable of performing the calcination process,which converted CaCO_(3) to calcium hydroxide[Ca(OH)_(2)],as well as the carbonation process,which captured carbon and converted it back to CaCO_(3).Parametric analysis was performed on both reactions,including pressure,temperature,duration,particle size and reaction *** results show that the limestone obtained from all sites can be used as the sorbents for the calcium-looping process with an average reactivity of 59.01%.Limestone from cement plants in various parts of Indonesia has the potential to be used as carbon sorbents in calcium-looping *** a similar CO_(2) concentration as the flue gas of 16.67%,the experimental results show that Bayah limestone has the maximum reactivity,as shown by the highest carbon-content a

Activated carbon is known as an amorphous compound that can be manufactured from carbon-containing raw materials. It has a high adsorption capacity and is widely used in a variety of fields due to its high surface area and nano-sized pore structure. The rising demand has prompted a search for low-cost, large-quantity raw materials to replace non-renewable raw materials such as coal and petroleum residues, both of which are becoming scarce. The purpose of this research is to assess three types of Balinese bamboo as raw materials for activated carbon: petung, santong, and tali bamboos. Samples were prepared by dehydrating them under the sun for 5 days, cutting them into small pieces (±1 × 1 × 1 cm), and then heating them in an electric furnace at 105 ℃ for 1 h. Samples were then observed their microstructure using an optical microscope. To determine the chemical composition, moisture, ash, volatile, and fixed carbon content of the raw materials, the sample was ground into powder and characterized using the Van Soest analysis, and termogravimetric analysis (TGA test). The results showed that tali bamboo has the highest potential to produce high-quality activated carbon due to its higher cellulose (37.97%) and lignin (32.27%) content than petung and santong bamboos;despite having the highest moisture content (11.23%), tali bamboo has a fairly high volatile (70.72%), the lowest ash content (1.41%), and the highest fixed carbon (16.64%). The microstructure shows that vascular bundles close to the epidermis are denser and smaller in size than those further away. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

This paper is concerned with developing a shrouded design for a diffuser-augmented wind turbine (DAWT) suitable for use in urban areas, such as on the rooftops of buildings or houses. This study would specifically investigate the effects of the developed designs on wind pressure and velocity conditions at the diffusers' inlet and outlet areas. Using the SOLIDWORKS application, two design concepts were created: single-layered and double-layered. The first concept used a single cone-shaped structured diffuser, whereas the second concept used a cone-shaped structure but with a smaller cone-shaped structure placed inside the first structure. To determine the pressure and velocity variations along the diffuser’s inlet and outlet areas, these concepts were simulated using the ANSYS Fluent® application. The results strongly favored the double shrouded design of Concept 2 in both velocity and pressure simulations, with a velocity increment of 102% and a drag force of −0.161 N. The actual test results also show promising data that would make the prototype feasible for use in an urban area, with an average efficiency of 40% and a high efficiency compared to other urban-built wind turbines. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Cooling tower is a heat transfer device that works through water media, along with air used to cool the temperature using water media with direct contact with air which causes some of the water to evaporate. To improve the performance of the cooling tower, many trials and research have been carried out, one of which is by adjusting the hole in the cooling tower area as a liquid medium distribution. From this phenomenon, this study examines the effect that occurs on the number of holes on the rate of movement of the flat plate cooling tower with the overall height of the cooling tower 2.4 m, the number of distribution media for the cooling tower water flow is 5 plates in succession, and the length of each plate is 0.7 m with a width of 0.5 m. Plate variations are given to the cooling tower, namely plate without holes, plate 25 plate holes, 35 holes, 45 holes zig-zag hole model on the cooling tower. The diameter of each plate hole is 0.02 m with the slope ratio of each plate arrangement which is 15°. The results showed the highest heat transfer rate occurred in the cooling tower water inlet temperature of 75 °C. The plate variation used was the plate without the inlet hole model. And the lowest heat transfer rate occurs at the inlet water temperature of 55 °C with a plate variation of 45 holes with a zig-zag hole model. So that the variation of the hole pattern affects the temperature change with the heat transfer rate on the tower performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

With the development of machine learning, numerical analysis using neural networks has been devised. Remarkably, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) enable physically consistent numerical analysis by introducing a loss function that conforms to relevant governing equations. Moreover, research is rapidly advancing for the application of PINNs to inverse analysis in areas such as physical property identification. For a PINN to learn governing equations, the weights of the loss functions should be properly determined because they have different roles in components such as boundary conditions, initial conditions, and governing equations. However, weight setting is generally challenging. We propose a loss balancing method considering the procedure for solving partial differential equations. The proposed method is validated through comparisons with conventional solvers. © 2024 IEEE.

The cofiring of biomass and coal may be one of the most effective methods to improve energy utilization efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas *** study aims to investigate combustion performance,interaction and synergistic effects in the cofiring of coal and three types of *** fuel consisting of coal and three types of biomass such as sawdust,rice husk and solid recovery fuel was selected as the research *** and proximate analysis and differential thermogravimetric analysis with heating rates of between 10°C and 40°C/minute are used to analyse combustion *** of combustion in a 600-MWe steam power plant with a Carolina-type boiler is also carried out with the help of computational fluid dynamic(CFD)analysis to see the effect of the interaction and synergy of the mixed fuel on the performance of the steam *** effect on the com-bustion process in the combustion chamber of a steam power plant is also *** on the analysis of several test results of parameters such as ignition temperature,burnout temperature,calorific value of the fuel mixtures as well as CFD simulation,the results of the study show a strong indication of a positive synergy in mixing some of these biomasses as compared with a fuel mix-ture consisting only of coal and one type of *** no power derating of the boiler occurs until the biomass content in the fuel mixture is~30%on a mass *** reduction in greenhouse gas emissions also appears significant from the results of the CFD simulation of this study,which is characterized by a decrease in the fraction of CO_(2) in flue gas from 21.5%for coal alone as fuel to 15.9%in the case of cofiring excluding the CO_(2) attributed to the biomass.

Most infectious diseases are caused by viruses that are spread from one person to another through the air. Isolation room is a room that keeps virus in infected people from spreading to other people by maintaining temperature and humidity. Therefore, a system is needed that regulates the isolation room to remain sterile, where this system must control and maintain the stability of air circulation in the room. For this purpose, this study proposes the design of an automated control system to regulate the temperature and humidity in an isolated room by controlling the supply air with damper. The method that is used in making this control system is experimental and analysis from sensor readings that will be used as a sign of decision-making for the damper output that will control the air flow to the isolation room with closed loop algorithm for the system control, the controller will send digital signal to the damper relay based on sensor reading, so that the data results of the experiment and analysis can see whether the control system can work well or not. The successful performance of the control system is seen from results of sensor readings;when the system changed the damper position it can maintain the isolation room situation around 22 °C to 24 °C for temperature and 50% until 60% for the humidity. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Crawler cranes are used in various applications, including plant construction and civil engineering. However, accidents caused by hazardous events, such as overturning the entire body or overshadowing of a suspended load, can be problematic. Because crawler cranes are large and powerful machines, simulators are required to analyze the relationship between such hazardous events and human operations. This study proposed a framework for a mixed-reality simulator to analyze the interactions between humans and crawler cranes. This framework combined the high-performance graphics capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 with the high-precision multibody dynamics analysis of MATLAB Simscape to create a visually and physically realistic simulation. Moreover, the quantification of the decision-making process was possible based on the eye-tracking information of the operator. This study described the implementation of these features and discussed the prospects for human-crawler crane interaction analysis using this simulator. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a method to estimate the posture of an athlete moving on a vast field in a sporting event using a pan-tilt-zoom camera. In order to estimate the posture of an athlete on a sports field from a dynamic video sequence, our method extracts image features to search correspondence points among successive frames and computes the homography transformation matrix that compensates for changes the camera parameters (e.g., angle of view and posture). The effectiveness of this method is qualitatively verified using MLB TV broadcast video. The accuracy and error factors are also quantitatively verified by CG simulation.
