This paper presents a high-precision position control system for a linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM) based on dSPACE real-time control platform. The LSRM has a very simple structure and it can be manufactured easily, and there is no need for magnets. The control system utilizes dSPACE development platform as the controller and generates the real-time code for the control algorithm and motor model, tuning the control parameters online and PD algorithm is implemented. The experiment results indicate that with the control method presented in the paper, the position error is less than 0.04 mm. Also compared with traditional research and development method, using dSPACE real-time control platform is able to quickly complete research and development for this kind of position control system, and the advantages are not only to shorten the entire system development cycle but also ensure system reliability and reduce costs.

The field of electric braking has focused its attention on braking force obtained by using a motor instead of a hydraulic brake which has been adopted by previous automobile systems. Electric braking is a system which consists of fewer numbers of components than previous hydraulic brakes, and it has effects of improved responsiveness and reduced braking distance for the ABS(Anti-lock Brake System) and the ESC(Electronic Stability control). The purpose of this paper is to develop BLAC motor Drive System for Electro-Magnetic Brake(EMB). In order to achieve the purpose, this paper shows a control system constituted by a power converter system which drives a motor and a digital control system which controls the speed, and it suggests a vector control strategy for a fast torque response. Furthermore, this paper applies the control technique and verifies the performance of BLAC motor drive system for EMB while providing the result of experiment as well as simulation by Matlab/Simulink.

This paper compares flat and hierarchical model structures in local model networks and discusses the side effects of normalization. A new algorithm for automatic transition adjustment between local models avoids undesirable effects that occur with the hierarchical approach and leads to a suitable model structure with better interpretability of local models. Demonstration examples illustrate the advantages over the existing approaches.

In this paper the new algorithm SUHICLUST (supervised hierarchical clustering) is presented. It unifies the strengths of the supervised, incremental construction scheme LOLIMOT with the advantages of product space clustering. The result of this fusion is a powerful structure identification algorithm that enables approximation of processes with axes-oblique partitioning, high flexible validity functions and local polynomial models. The theoretical comparison with LOLIMOT and product space clustering and a demonstration example underline the usefulness of SUHICLUST.

This study investigate the potential biomedical application of micro/nano-aperture membrane fabricated with Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Experimental work is carried out to examine the membrane's sound transmission /absorption characteristics under the condition of different aperture diameter, thickness and cavity depth of tube. It is discovered that when there is no air layer besides the tested membrane, sound transmission is not affected. When there is sound layer, it is resonant sound absorption. In the frequency range of 100-1500Hz, it is low frequency high rate sound transmission zone. In the frequency range of 1500Hz-6300Hz, it is high frequency resonant sound absorption. It is found that PTFE as a fine sound transmission material as well as a fine sound absorption material. The original test provides a solid evidence for further research and modeling of sound transmission theory. © 2009 IEEE.

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a technology that developed over the last three decades has provided a novel and promising alternative method for interacting with the environment. BCI is a system which translates a subject's intentions into a control signal for a device, e.g., a computer application, a wheelchair or a neuroprosthesis. Electroencephalogram-based BCI has become a hot spot in the research of neural engineering, rehabilitation, and brain science. The artifacts are disturbance that can occur during the signal acquisition and that can alter the analysis of the signals themselves. Removing artifacts produced in Electroencephalogram (EEG) data by muscle activity, eye blinks and electrical noise is a common and important problem in EEG analysis. In this research, for artifact rejection, EEG data are filtered to the frequency range between 8 and 32 Hz with a butterworth band-pass filter. Finally two different structures of neural network and a support vector machine used to classify features that are extracted by Hilbert and Wavelet transform. © 2009 IEEE.

Analysis of thermal effect on transparent conductive oxide thin films ablated by UV laser

Transparent conductive oxide thin films are applied to many computer, communication and consumer electronics products including thin film transistor liquid crystal displays, organic light emitting diodes, solar cells, mobile phones, and digital cameras. The laser direct write patterning of the indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film processing technique produces a heat affected zone that has an enormous effect on the electro-optical efficiency of transparent conductive oxide films. This is because direct laser writing patterning in thermal machining process can create debris and micro-cracks in the substrate. Therefore, this study establishes the ultraviolet (UV) laser ablation of temperature model on the polycarbonate and soda-lime glass substrates using the finite element analysis software ANSYS, and measures the temperature field based on the laser micro-patterning process. The meshing model determines the structure of the pre-processors and parameters were set with ANSYS parameter design language. This study also simulates the Gaussian distribution laser irradiation on the pre-processor structure. A UV laser processing system made micro-patterning on ITO thin films to analyze which conditions damaged the substrates. Comparing the simulation and experiment results reveals the minimum laser ablation threshold of the ITO thin films with the melting and vaporization temperatures. Simulation results show that the temperature distribution on PC and soda-lime glass substrates after laser irradiation of 1.05 μs with a laser output power of 0.07 W produces temperatures of approximately 52 °C, 54 °C and 345Cand 205 °C at the laser output power of 0.46 W. The experiment results show that the patterning region is similar to the simulation results, and the lower laser power does not damage the substrates. © 2009.

A geometry-based method is proposed in this paper to solve the stereo-correspondence problem of single-lens biprism stereovision *** an optical bi-prism and a static CCD camera setup,image pairs are captured synchronously by two virtual cameras which are defined by two boundary lines:optical axis and CCD camera field of view(FOV) boundary *** geometrical relationship between the 2D images and the 3D scene are established by applying two fundamental theories:geometrical analysis in which all the pertinent points,lines and planes are expressed in 3D Camera Coordinates and the Rules of Refraction. Subsequently,the least square method is employed to fit the epipolar line with a set of obtained corresponding point candidates. The corresponding points are located by searching along the epipolar fine with SSD(Sum of Square Difference) correlation algorithm. By utilizing the uniquely geometrical properties of the bi-prism stereovision system,complicated camera calibration procedures are exempted to settle down the stereo *** geometry-based method can be easily generalized to tri-ocular and multi-ocular stereovision systems to facilitate the solving of stereo-correspondence *** are conducted to validate this method.

This paper describes a design and development of a graphical user interface (GUI) panel for microprocessor-based controller for a flying robot applications. The robot consists of a mini-aerial helicopter with a build-in integrated camera that linked to a PC-based controller that manipulated by a GUI Panel program. A couple of full duplex transceivers are used to provide wireless communications between the controller and the flying robots. The main objective is building advanced GUI panel that could simulate and visualize high-performance robot systems for further image acquisition and analysis. The test result is well described and the vision data captured is encouraging for future development. Some problems is also being notified for further improvement of the flying robot system.

We describe a unique competition based on the novel concept of robotics and mechatronics products that included evaluation of the products' engineering function and interface design. Seventy-seven students of eleven teams from seven universities in the Kyushu area participated in the competition, whose subject was " Health care, life supporting and communication or other technical aids for the elderly or disabled." Many of the plans presented ideas that balanced function and design, showing the results of collaboration among students studying engineering and students studying product design. © 2009 SICE.
