AIE-based fluorescent sensing of ciprofloxacin using non-fluorescent 2D silver dimolybdate nanosheets: The synergistic sensor method (SGSM) to switch on non-fluorescent 2D nanosheets into an effective fluorescent biosensor

The development of an efficient method for detecting ciprofloxacin (CIP) is critical due to the potential for significant harm to humans, including the danger of severe liver damage and hematuria associated with increased levels of this drug. In this study, we offer a highly sensitive and highly selective method for fluorescence sensing of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin employing the properties of Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) with silver dimolybdate nanosheets (Ag2Mo2O7 NSs). Outstanding structural characteristics of the Ag2Mo2O7 NSs achieved using the hydrothermal method. By carefully controlling the aggregation of the Synergistic Sensor Method (SGSM), we are able to produce a very bright fluorescence response with the ciprofloxacin concentration range from 0 to 250 nM with a low detection limit of 1.1 nM. Quick and ultrasensitive detection has been achieved by the Synergistic effect (SGE) and AIE from the current approach. The SGSM has been shown to be a novel platform for human health monitoring and pharmaceutical quality control. With broad-ranging practical implications, the combination of AIE and silver dimolybdate nanosheets offers a platform for reliable and ciprofloxacin detection. We believe the SGSM is a role model paper for future nano-biosensor detection methods due to the synergistic effect resulting in the AIE and turn-on sensor approach for many non-fluorescent 2D nanosheets. This can open many new doors for the intensive development of 2D nanosheets for future fluorescent sensors without the need to produce fluorescence by the nanosheet itself. © 2024

PURPOSE:Pediatric hydrocephalus is the most common cause of surgically treatable neurological disease in children. Controversies exist whether endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt placement is the most appropriate treatment for pediatric hydrocephalus. This study aimed to compare the risk of re-operation and death between the two procedures. METHODS:We performed a retrospective population-based cohort study and included patients younger than 20-years-old who underwent CSF shunt or ETV for hydrocephalus from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. RESULTS:A total of 3,555 pediatric patients from 2004 to 2017 were selected, including 2,340 (65.8%) patients that received CSF shunt placement and 1215 (34.2%) patients that underwent ETV. The incidence of all-cause death was 3.31 per 100 person-year for CSF shunt group and 2.52 per 100 person-year for ETV group, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.66-0.94, p = 0.009). The cumulative incidence competing risk for reoperation was 31.2% for the CSF shunt group and 26.4% for the ETV group, with an adjusted subdistribution HR of 0.82 (95% CI = 0.70-0.96, p = 0.015). Subgroup analysis showed that ETV was beneficial for hydrocephalus coexisting with brain or spinal tumor, central nervous system infection, and intracranial hemorrhage. CONCLUSION:Our data indicates ETV is a better operative procedure for pediatric hydrocephalus when advanced surgical techniques and instruments are available.

Background: Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been applied widely in several energy storage applications. Triphenylamine derivatives are good electrode materials that can be processed into SC devices because of their high charge mobilities, unique electronic properties, and high redox activity. Methods: We prepared two novel tetrabenzonaphthalene-linked conjugated microporous polymers (TBN-pH CMPs) through [4 + 2] and [4 + 3] Schiff-base condensations of 2,7,10,15-tetra(4-formylphenyl)tetrabenzonaphthalene (TBN-PhCHO) with tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)ethene (TPE-4NH2) and tris(4-aminophenyl)amine (TPA-3NH2), respectively. Fourier transform infrared, and solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy investigated the structures of the as-prepared CMPs. Significant Findings: These CMPs, had large surface areas and outstanding thermal stability at temperatures of up to 400 °C, making them suitable for use as electrodes in supercapacitor (SC) systems. Indeed, the TBN-TPA CMP–based electrode had high specific capacitances (251 F g − 1 measured at 0.5 A g–1) and capacity retentions (94%, measured after 5000 cycles at 10 A g–1) when tested in three-electrode systems. We attribute the remarkable electrochemical activity and conductivity of the TBN-TPA CMP electrode to its large specific surface area (230 m2 g–1) and chemical structure featuring stacking of the benzene rings of its redox-active triphenylamine moieties. © 2023 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers

Blood platelet count significantly affects the development of severe conditions like myocardial infarction, peripheral arterial ischemia, respiratory compromise, stroke, diabetes, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), along with chemotherapy patients and those suffering cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). These conditions necessitate frequent monitoring of platelet counts to guide diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. However, existing techniques are relatively time-consuming, lack of accuracy and require precise operation. The emergence of these severe diseases underscored the need to develop advanced platelet count-monitoring techniques which are rapid, highly precise, and conveniently portable for point-of-care applications. In this study, we emphasized the development of a triboelectric microfluidic nanosensor (TMNS) for platelet quantification through the assessment of flow resistance. The functionality of TMNS device is based on immobilization of platelets on a collagen layer coated inside a microfluidic channel. The triboelectric voltage output is measured as a detection signal of the flow resistance and is enhanced by incorporating high surface area copper oxide nanowires (CuO NWs) on the interior of copper tubes. These copper tubes serve as terminal electrodes and for flow guiding. The flow resistance of plasma solutions is elevated when the platelet concentration increases due to heightened adherence of platelets onto the collagen layer. Variations in flow resistance induce alterations in contact electrification, causing changes in output voltage at load terminals. Fine-tuning of the TMNS device was achieved by optimizing the channel width and length, flowing liquid viscosity, and voltage measurement technique. The study aims to develop an abnormal body temperature probability (ABTP) model for dairy cattle, utilizing environmental and physiological data. This model is designed to enhance the management of heat stress impacts, providing an early warning system for farm managers to improve dairy cattle welfare and farm productivity in response to climate change. The study employs the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) algorithm to analyze environmental and physiological data from 320 dairy cattle, identifying key factors influencing body temperature anomalies. This method supports the development of various models, including the Lyman Kutcher-Burman (LKB), Logistic, Schultheiss, and Poisson models, which are evaluated for their ability to predict abnormal body temperatures in dairy cattle effectively. The study successfully validated multiple models to predict abnormal body temperatures in dairy cattle, with a focus on the temperature-humidity index (THI) as a critical determinant. These models, including LKB, Logistic, Schultheiss, and Poisson, demonstrated high accuracy, as measured by the AUC and other performance metrics such as the Brier score and Hosmer–Lemeshow (HL) test. The results highlight the robustness of the models in capturing the nuances of heat stress impacts on dairy cattle. The research develops innovative models for managing heat stress in dairy cattle, effectively enhancing detection and intervention strategies. By integrating advanced technologies and novel predictive models, the study offers effective measures for early detection and management of abnormal body temperatures, improving cattle welfare and farm productivity in changing climatic conditions. This approach highlights the importance of using multiple models to accurately predict and address heat stress in livestock, making significant contributions to enhancing farm management practices. © The Author(s) 2024.

BACKGROUND:The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (ISRSFC) was introduced globally in 2019 in response to the absence of a standardized reporting system for serous fluid cytology. This study presents experiences implementing this system across three distinct hospitals in Taiwan. METHODS:A total of 6177 serous fluid specimens in three hospitals in Taiwan between 2018 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed and reclassified according to the ISRSFC. Cytohistological correlation and chart review were further performed to investigate etiologies and risks of malignancy (ROMs). RESULTS:Reclassification showed that 34 (0.7%) of 4838 pleural effusions were nondiagnostic (ND), 4086 (84.5%) were negative for malignancy (NFM), 201 (4.2%) were atypia of undetermined significance (AUS), 92 (1.9%) were suspicious for malignancy (SFM), and 425 (8.8%) were malignant (MAL). The 1231 ascites cases contained 13 (1.1%) ND, 1004 (81.6%) NFM, 53 (4.3%) AUS, 31 (2.5%) SFM, and 130 (10.6%) MAL specimens. In pleural effusions, the ROM was 2.9% for ND, 14.0% for NFM, 52.2% for AUS, 85.9% for SFM, and 95.1% for MAL. In ascites, it was 15.4% for ND, 19.1% for NFM, 52.8% for AUS, 83.9% for SFM, and 92.3% for MAL. In pericardial effusions, it was 0.0% for ND, 11.6% for NFM, 30.8% for AUS, 100.0% for SFM, and 95.2% for MAL. Different effusions' most common benign and malignant etiologies were also disclosed. CONCLUSIONS:These multi-institutional data have determined the diagnostic usefulness of the ISRSFC, which provides pathologists and physicians with invaluable assistance in correctly classifying effusions for further management.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant global health concern often accompanied by cognitive impairment in affected patients. Ludwigia octovalvis extract (LOE) is a traditional medicine widely used for various conditions, including renal disease and its associated complications. However, the pharmacological effects and underlying mechanisms of LOE on CKD remain unclear. Methods: Adult male mice underwent a 4-week oral adenine-induced CKD model, followed by daily administration of either a vehicle, losartan, or LOE for 1 to 2 months. A battery of behavioral tests was conducted to examine CKD-associated cognitive impairments. Additionally, RNA sequencing, Golgi staining, and immunohistochemistry were performed to decipher the underlying mechanisms. Results: Neither losartan nor LOE supplementation could reverse adenine-induced kidney damage. However, during behavioral tests, both losartan and LOE treatments improved memory performance in mice without affecting emotional status and general locomotor activity. Transcriptome profiling and histological analyses revealed altered dendritic arborization and increased spine density of dentate granule cells, along with augmented adult hippocampal neurogenesis, contributing to the improved memory performance of mice treated with LOE. Conclusion: Our study provides comprehensive neurobehavioral and molecular evidence supporting the potential use of LOE for future CKD-associated memory dysfunction treatment. © 2024 The Author(s)

Wastewater-based surveillance of respiratory viruses in Northern Tuscany (Italy): Challenges and added value for public health purposes

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) showed great potential as an early warning system and could complement human clinical surveillance. This study aimed to highlight the added value of WBS for respiratory infections alongside different clinical surveillance systems. Sewage collected at the entry of four Wastewater Treatment Plants in Northern Tuscany (Italy) were analyzed for SARS-CoV-2, Human Adenovirus (HAdV), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Influenza Virus (IV), over two years. Clinical data for COVID-19 were available for the study area, while data for other viruses came from national virological surveillance. For SARS-CoV-2, the correlation was highly significant between clinical and hospitalization data (ρ = 0.8460), but not significant between wastewater and clinical or hospitalization data (ρ = 0.1682 and ρ = 0.0569, respectively). SARS-CoV-2 RNA was found in wastewater even in period when clinical cases were not reported, indicating a continuous community circulation. HAdVs were detected in 74.3 % of samples, but most of the sequences identified belonged to enteric species (HAdV-F41), indicating the need of distinguishing the species causing respiratory diseases for the surveillance. RSV were found only in winter 2022–2023, while IV had not been detected in wastewater, probably due to poor test sensitivity. In conclusion, although there may be various challenges in testing different targets, WBS can provide pathogen-specific situational assessment which complements existing surveillance systems. © 2024 The Authors

Virtual Reality-Assisted Rehabilitation for Patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Background Chronic musculoskeletal disorders often lead to persistent pain and psychological distress, negatively affecting patients' quality of life. Virtual reality (VR), as a novel therapeutic approach, has been shown to effectively alleviate chronic pain and improve mental health. However, systematic comparisons between immersive and non-immersive VR in terms of efficacy are still lacking. Objective This study aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy of immersive and non-immersive VR in alleviating pain and psychological distress in patients with chronic musculoskeletal disorders through a systematic review and meta-analysis, while also exploring its clinical applicability. Methods This study included 17 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of immersive VR with non-immersive VR and traditional active training methods. The primary outcomes assessed were pain intensity and psychological distress (including depression and anxiety). Data were collected from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of science, and analyzed using standardized effect sizes. Results The analysis showed that immersive VR demonstrated significantly better efficacy in reducing pain and improving psychological health, particularly in enhancing patient engagement and treatment adherence. Non-immersive VR was also effective, but the effects were more modest. Conclusion Immersive VR-assisted training showed superior efficacy compared to non-immersive VR and traditional therapies. Future research should further explore its long-term effects and optimal application methods to facilitate broader clinical adoption.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols aim to aid recovery, but their impact on older TKA patients is uncertain. Methods This study employs a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize the effects of ERAS on older patients with TKA from randomized controlled trials. PubMed, Cochrane, Web of science, and EMBASE databases were searched, and the Analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.4 software. Results The ERAS group showed a significantly shorter length of hospital stay, fewer postoperative complications, and no significant difference in readmission rates compared to the control group. Regarding pain management, the ERAS group had significantly lower VAS scores on the first two postoperative days, reduced analgesic use, and lower hospitalization costs, demonstrating clear clinical advantages. Conclusion ERAS accelerates older patients' TKA recovery, reducing hospital stays and complications, and has important clinical implications.
