The growing demand for highly reliable communication systems drives research and development of algorithms capable of identifying and correcting errors that occur during data transmission and storage. This need becomes even more critical in hard-to-access or sensitive systems, such as those used in space applications, passenger transportation, and the financial sector. In this context, Error Correction Codes (ECCs) are essential tools for ensuring a certain level of reliability. This work proposes a technique to enhance ECC error correction capability through the overlapping of data regions. The approach consists of protecting the same data area with multiple ECCs organized in a two-dimensional structure, enabling logical inferences that correlate the codes and improve their error detection and correction capabilities. More specifically, the overlapping is characterized by the organization of multiple ECCs, whose intersection exclusively covers the entire data region. To evaluate the proposal, different configurations of overlapping ECCs were analyzed in terms of error detection and correction capability, scalability, and reliability. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the technique and demonstrate its high scalability potential, reducing the need for redundancy bits relative to the number of data bits. Furthermore, comparisons with state-of-the-art ECC approaches indicate the applicability of the technique in critical systems that require high reliability. © 2025, CC BY.

Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are critical for enabling accurate navigation, asset tracking, and emergency response in indoor environments where GPS fails. This study evaluates five machine learning algorithms-K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Decision Tree, and Random Forest-using two benchmark datasets, UJIIndoorLoc and UTSIndoorLoc. The results reveal that SVM achieves the highest accuracy, with 81.3 % on UJIIndoorLoc and 92 % on UTSIndoorLoc, followed by MLP with $\mathbf{7 8. 8 \%}$ and 90.9 %, respectively. Random Forest provides stable performance, with 77.6 % and 86.08 %, while KNN reaches 75 % and 89.7 %, performing well in structured environments. Decision Tree shows the lowest accuracy, 71.2 % and 76.54 %, highlighting its limitations with complex data. The UTSIndoorLoc dataset consistently yields higher accuracies, demonstrating its structured signal distribution. These findings underscore SVM and MLP as optimal algorithms for Wi-Fi fingerprinting IPS, offering robust and scalable solutions for indoor localization.

As cybersecurity threats evolve alarmingly, conventional defense strategies are becoming increasingly ineffective. In response to this urgent challenge, our study presents a transformative approach to red-teaming exercises by integrating the MITRE ATT&CK framework. This innovative integration leverages real-world attacker tactics and behaviors to create highly realistic scenarios that rigorously test defenses and uncover previously unidentified vulnerabilities. Our comprehensive evaluation demonstrates a significant enhancement in the realism and effectiveness of red-teaming, leading to improved vulnerability identification and the generation of actionable insights for proactive remediation. This study uniquely contributes by providing a structured, data-driven methodology that aligns current defenses with emerging threat tactics and promotes continuous improvement in cybersecurity resilience. Such advancements are essential for organizations seeking to stay ahead of attackers and maintain robust cyber defenses in dynamic threat environments. The significance of this study lies in offering a structured approach to strengthen cybersecurity resilience against evolving threats and providing a model for continual defense enhancement. The security closure of integrated circuits (ICs) is an emerging area of research within the very large scale integration (VLSI) community. Malicious third parties, referred to as "attackers", can employ various techniques to leak, alter, or manipulate the logic of a circuit. When targeting a completed layout, their primary goal is often the insertion of hardware trojans. In this work, we present algorithms that strengthen placement solutions against hardware trojan attacks. While state-of-the-art methods rely on exhaustive placement algorithms, we propose a clustering-based placement approach that reduces the number of moved cells by up to 17%. Additionally, we introduce a cell movement heuristic aimed at preventing increases in wirelength. Our methods reduce vulnerable placement sites by up to 78% while maintaining minimal impact on design performance. Compared to other approaches, our solution decreases the amount of moved cells to an average of 8%, mitigating the impact on wirelength to an average of 0.5%. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Recent advancements in on-demand multimedia streaming have revealed the potential of this business model, driven by the convenience of accessing content anytime and anywhere. However, delivering a seamless user experience remains challenging due to the demanding nature of audiovisual streams, despite significant resource allocation. A promising solution involves using load balancers to distribute workloads evenly among processing units. This study proposes optimizing the processing and transmission resources by means of Software-Defined Networks (SDN). By continuously monitoring performance metrics like CPU usage and throughput, the SDN network controller determines the best server for handling new connections, even allowing seamless server migration during playback. The results show up to 80% faster response times and more consistent video quality, with reduced latency and uninterrupted playback. The approach also confirms the feasibility of SDN in streaming services, providing a foundation for future network improvements.

Simulation-based learning is one of the most powerful tools to support the educational process. This learning offers an opportunity to learn based on experiences that are very similar to real-world environments. In the context of logistics, which can be considered a complex system, significant efforts are required to enhance students' understanding and practical skills. For that reason, simulations are used so that benefits such as skills and knowledge in the field of logistics can be achieved. However, there are currently several challenges in developing simulation-based learning in higher education. These challenges include the need for simulations that are appropriate for the current learning context, where the students are generally from Generation Z, and how to improve their learning quality in the era of Industry 4.0. To address these challenges, more suitable simulations need to be developed, and higher education institutions must carefully examine how to develop them, including identifying the essential components in the development of simulations for logistics learning. In this research, a systematic literature review using the PRISMA method and also creating a conceptual model of simulation that better meets the current needs of logistics education will be proposed. The results of this research can be used as a basis for developing updated simulations to better prepare students for the challenges of Industry 4.0.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a significant health burden globally, contributing to 1–2% of all mortality. The quest for new pharmacological interventions for NTDs is hampered by the substantial time and financial resources required for drug development, alongside a marked disinterest from laboratories due to the geographic and economic profiles of affected regions. This study presents a novel protocol for leveraging graph database architectures to elucidate potential connections between NTDs and existing pharmaceuticals that may be repurposed for treatment. Focusing on tuberculosis as a case study, we constructed a graph database integrating comprehensive disease and drug data. By removing established links between tuberculosis and known treatments, we employed a Graph Convolutional Neural Network (Graph-CNN) algorithm to unearth previously unrecognized relationships. This computational approach not only facilitates the discovery of new drug-disease associations but also streamlines the repurposing process for existing medications. Our findings demonstrate the utility of advanced data engineering and machine learning techniques in identifying promising therapeutic candidates for NTDs, potentially accelerating the availability of effective treatments for these underserved diseases. The study’s contribution is underscored by a comparative analysis of state-of-the-art algorithms within our graph database framework, highlighting the efficacy of our protocol in the broader context of drug repurposing research. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper proposes a measurement technique for an integrated complex filter. The proposed method is based on two measurement methods with integrated circuitry for calibration. It is accomplished by applying square waves to an FUT (Filter Under Test) instead of sinusoidal waves or by superposing transfer characteristics obtained by applying a single sinusoidal wave to an FUT. In both of the above methods, the output signal connected to the external measurement equipment via a 50 Ω coaxial cable and so on. In this case, the output signal of the FUT should be amplified by internal or external amplifiers, which degrades the response. However, it is cancelled out by the proposed calibration circuitry with some analog switches. In addition to the above, for the RC polyphase filter, the source resistance and the load capacitance degrade the measurement results and their effect is discussed. The validity of the proposal is confirmed through computer simulation for a third-order RCPF whose passband is 8–40 MHz fabricated by Phenitec 0.6 µm CMOS process. It is shown that the measurement error is −1.10 dB for the square-wave method and −1.00 dB and −0.43 degrees for the superposition method at 40 MHz. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Total Antioxidant Capacity of Meals Suggested in the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population

Chronic non-communicable diseases have modifiable risk factors, with dietary habits being a key component. A diet abundant in antioxidant-rich foods is inversely correlated with the onset and progression of these diseases. This study aimed to estimate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of meals suggested in the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian population (DGBP) (2014), as well as identify the main contributing foods. The research was quantitative and descriptive, based on the analysis of secondary data from photographic records of the suggested meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in the DGBP. The foods, their preparation methods, and portion sizes were identified. The TAC of the foods was primarily estimated according to Carlsen et al. (2010), through the Ferric-Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP) assay. Subsequently, the TAC of the meals, the percentage contribution of each food item, and the TAC adjusted to 250 kcal were estimated. The average TAC found was 3.01 ± 1.35 mmol in breakfast suggestions, 1.93 ± 0.84 mmol in lunch suggestions, and 2.49 ± 3.34 mmol in dinner suggestions, with no significant differences when comparing the TAC results among the three meals (p=0.608). However, coffee was identified as the main contributor in breakfast suggestions, while beans stood out as the main contributor in lunch and dinner suggestions. Therefore, the foods that most prominently contributed to the TAC of the meals suggested by DGBP were those that, in addition to being part of the national food culture, are classified as in natura or minimally processed, highlighting their importance in providing bioactive compounds with health benefits. © 2025, The Authors. Thermally treated granite slurry waste as a mitigating agent for sisal fiber mineralization in fiber-cement composites

This study explores the use of thermally treated granite slurry waste to mitigate the mineralization of sisal fibers in fiber-cement composites. Granite waste was thermally treated at 600°C and 900°C, and the treated materials were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sisal fibers, alkali-treated with 1.7% NaOH, were incorporated into fiber-cement composites, where 15% and 30% of the cement was replaced by treated and untreated granite. Composites with 15% of granite treated at 600°C and 900°C showed improvements in compressive strength of up to 12% and 18%, respectively, compared to the control. The flexural strength increased by 10% with 15% granite treated at 900°C. However, the untreated granite at 30% replacement increased porosity by 25% and water absorption by 18%, negatively affecting the mechanical properties. Aging tests showed a 40% loss in compressive strength, while composites with 30% granite treated at 900°C maintained their flexural strength, making them more durable. These findings highlight the potential of thermally treated granite waste to enhance the sustainability and performance of fiber-cement composites in construction. © 2025 The Author(s).
