Extensible Markup Language (XML) has become an important format for data exchange and representation on the Web. In addition to conventional query processing, more complex analysis on XML data is considered to become important in order to discover valuable information. In this research, we attempt to investigate an XML-OLAP, by which we can perform multidimensional analysis on XML data taking XML's features into account. Users are allowed to specify XML data-cube by XPath, and perform analytical processing by XQuery with OLAP extension. The system is implemented on top of relational databases, and the given requests for data-cube specification and analysis are translated into SQL so that they can be processed using the underlying system. We show the feasibility of the proposed scheme by experimental evaluations.

Using a simple method analogous to a quantum rephasing technique, a simple modification to a paradigm of classical and quantum chaos is proposed. The interesting quantum maps thus obtained display remarkably rich quantum dynamics. Emphasis is placed on the destruction of dynamical localization without breaking periodicity, unbounded quantum anomalous diffusion in integrable systems, and transient dynamical localization. Experimental realizations of this work are also discussed.

A two-step PCR method has been developed for the robust, high-throughput production of linear templates ready for cell-free protein synthesis. The construct made from the cDNA expresses a target protein region with N- and/or C-terminal tags. The procedure consists only of mixing, dilution, and PCR steps, and is free from cloning and purification steps. In the first step of the two-step PCR, a target region within the coding sequence is amplified using two gene-specific forward and reverse primers, which contain the linker sequences and the terminal sequences of the target region. The second PCR concatenates the first PCR product with the N- and C-terminal double-stranded fragments, which contain the linker sequences as well as the sequences for the tag(s) and the initiation and termination, respectively, for T7 transcription and ribosomal translation, and amplifies it with the universal primer. Proteins can be fused with a variety of tags, such as natural poly-histidine, glutathione-S- transferase, maltose-binding protein, and/or streptavidin-binding peptide. The two-step PCR method was successfully applied to 42 human target protein regions with various GC contents (38-77%). The robustness of the two-step PCR method against possible fluctuations of experimental conditions in practical use was explored. The second PCR product was obtained at 60-120 μg/ml, and was used without purification as a template at a concentration of 2-4 μg/ml in an Escherichia coli coupled transcription-translation system. This combination of two-step PCR with cell-free protein synthesis is suitable for the rapid production of proteins in milligram quantities for genome-scale studies. © 2007 Springer science+Business Media B.V.

Markov chains are a natural and well understood tool for describing one-dimensional patterns in time or space. We show how to infer kth order Markov chains, for arbitrary k, from finite data by applying Bayesian methods to both parameter estimation and model-order selection. Extending existing results for multinomial models of discrete data, we connect inference to statistical mechanics through information-theoretic (type theory) techniques. We establish a direct relationship between Bayesian evidence and the partition function which allows for straightforward calculation of the expectation and variance of the conditional relative entropy and the source entropy rate. Finally, we introduce a method that uses finite data-size scaling with model-order comparison to infer the structure of out-of-class processes.

Vacancy-type defects in MOSFET structures fabricated with high-k (HfSiON) gate dielectrics were studied by monogenetic positron beams An expansion of open volumes in HfSiON fabricated on Si substrates using atomic layer deposition technique was observed with increasing nitrogen concentration This fact was discussed in terms of a role of nitrogen in Hf-related oxide using results obtained by first-principles calculation and XPS. MOSFETs fabricated by F +-channel implantation technique were also characterized. The major defect species which causes the F& shift of MOSFETs was identified as vacancy-fluorine complexes (such as V3F2) locate in channel regions of Si substrates. The preset work suggests that positron annihilation can be used to detect microscopic defects in MOSFETs, and it is a useful tool for determining process parameters for MOSFET fabrications with high-k gate dielectrics. © The Electrochemical Society.

This paper describes a dynamic load balancing tool intended for computational investigators who have little familiarity with programming for a message-passing environment. Motivated by the PAR DOALL directive available in some compilers for shared-memory systems, the tool is designed to simplify the manual conversion of sequential programs containing computationally intensive one- or two-dimensional loops with independent iterates into parallel programs that execute with high efficiency on general-purpose clusters. The tool implements a dynamic loop scheduling strategy to address load imbalance which may be induced by the non-uniformity of loop iterate times, and by the heterogeneity of processors. The tool is based on the Message Passing Interface library for wide availability. Experimental results of two scientific applications that utilize the tool on a Linux cluster are presented to demonstrate sample achievable performance, and to underscore the effectiveness of the two-level dynamic load balancing strategy. © 2007 SWPS.

Mobility of Discrete Solitons in Quadratically Nonlinear Media

We study the mobility of solitons in lattices with quadratic (χ(2), alias second-harmonic-generating) nonlinearity. Using the notion of the Peierls-Nabarro potential and systematic numerical simulations, we demonstrate that, in contrast with their cubic (χ(3)) counterparts, the discrete quadratic solitons are mobile not only in the one-dimensional (1D) setting, but also in two dimensions (2D), in any direction. We identify parametric regions where an initial kick applied to a soliton leads to three possible outcomes: staying put, persistent motion, or destruction. On the 2D lattice, the solitons survive the largest kick and attain the largest speed along the diagonal direction.

We investigate fundamental localized modes in two-dimensional lattices with an edge (surface). The interaction with the edge expands the stability area for fundamental solitons, and induces a difference between dipoles oriented perpendicular and parallel to the surface. On the contrary, lattice vortex solitons cannot exist too close to the border. We also show, analytically and numerically, that the edge supports a species of localized patterns, which exists too but is unstable in the uniform lattice, namely, a horseshoe-shaped soliton, whose “skeleton” consists of three lattice sites. Unstable horseshoes transform themselves into a pair of ordinary solitons.

Quantum ratchets for periodically kicked cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates

We study cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates exposed to time-dependent standing waves of light. We first discuss a quantum chaotic dissipative ratchet using the method of quantum trajectories. This system is characterized by directed transport emerging from a quantum strange attractor. We then present a very simple model of directed transport with cold atoms in a pair of periodically flashed optical lattices. Finally we study the dynamics of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a toroidal trap and exposed to a pair of periodically flashed optical lattices. We show that the many-body atom-atom interactions, treated within the mean-field approximation, can generate directed transport. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.
