This paper presents a study accomplished in the State of Parana in Southern Brazil, aiming at verifying the correlation between organizational human factors (OHF) and the level of energy losses in organizations. The purpose is to subsidize the formularization of institutional policies in organizations to improve the energy efficiency in the productive sector. The research was carried out in ten industries of the following sectors: pulp and paper;food;wood and chemical products. The losses of electric energy were determined in motor systems with the aid of a mathematical model and the evaluation of 27 OHF identified in the literature review was made with the supervisors in the industries by means of a structurized questionnaire. Seven OHF had presented significant correlation with energy losses and six of them are inversely proportional to the losses, in accordance with linear regression analysis. The inversely proportional factors to the losses also with significant correlation are considered determinative OHF and constitute barriers for energy efficiency in organizations. These barriers are linked with the following organizational areas: management system;education of employees;strategical vision. The study recommends the implementation of the determinative OHF in organizations as a way to transpose the human barriers for energy efficiency. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In most cases, owners of companies or general contractors initiate Lean implementation on construction projects. The value in this case study is that it presents a subcontractor successfully implementing Lean construction on its projects. The case study investigated its motivation for making a Lean transformation, the course of its Lean transformation, and the lessons learned through its Lean journey. The study used interviews with twentyfive key personnel, twelve site visits, and an analysis of twelve documents on twelve projects. Further, it shows that while subcontractors have difficulty initiating Lean implementation beyond their own firms due to their lack of influence, it is possible for them to affect this kind of change.

The identification of a nonlinear system with chaotic behavior denoted Chua's oscillator by using fuzzy models intertwined with particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is presented. This hybrid approach is applied to experimental data generated by an inductorless Chua's circuit that consists of an electronic chaotic oscillator. Chua's circuit has been used as a test platform by various scientific and engineering communities related to the study of chaos due its great potencial in technological applications, for instance, telecommunications, cryptography and physics. Fuzzy set theory has been evolved as a powerful modeling tool that can cope with uncertainties and nonlinearities in modeling and identification procedures. The identification of a optimized fuzzy model Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model involves two primary tasks: parameter tuning and structure optimization. The premise part of production rules is optimized here by using the particle swarm optimization method. In turn, least mean squares technique is applied to the consequent part of a T-S fuzzy model. Results indicate PSO method and Least Mean Square technique succeeded in constructing a T-S fuzzy model when dealing with chaotic dynamics obtained through experimental data supplied by inductorless Chua's electronic circuit.

Evolutionary algorithms are heuristic methods that have yielded promising results for solving nonlinear, nondifferentiable, and multi-modal optimization problems in the power systems area. The differential evolution (DE) algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm that uses a rather greedy and less stochastic approach to problem solving than do classical evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, and evolution strategies. DE also incorporates an efficient way of self-adapting mutation using small populations. The potentialities of DE are its simple structure, easy use, convergence property, quality of solution, and robustness. This paper proposes a new approach for solving economic load dispatch problems with valve-point effect. The proposed method combines the DE algorithm with the generator of chaos sequences and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) technique to optimize the performance of economic dispatch problems. The DE with chaos sequences is the global optimizer, and the SQP is used to fine-tune the DE run in a sequential manner. The combined methodology and its variants are validated for two test systems consisting of 13 and 40 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. The proposed combined method outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving load dispatch problems with the valve-point effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
