In this paper, we provide a first physical interpretation for the event Horizon Telescope (eHT)’s 2017 observations of Sgr A∗. Our main approach is to compare resolved eHT data at 230 GHz and unresolved non-eHT observations from radio to X-ray wavelengths to predictions from a library of models based on time-dependent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) simulations, including aligned, tilted, and stellar wind-fed simulations;radiative transfer is performed assuming both thermal and non-thermal electron distribution functions. We test the models against 11 constraints drawn from eHT 230 GHz data and observations at 86 GHz, 2.2 µm, and in the X-ray. All models fail at least one constraint. Light curve variability provides a particularly severe constraint, failing nearly all strongly magnetized (MAD) models and a large fraction of weakly magnetized (SANe) models. A number of models fail only the variability constraints. We identify a promising cluster of these models, which are MAD and have inclination i ≤ 30°. They have accretion rate (5.2–9.5) × 10−9M☉ yr−1, bolometric luminosity (6.8–9.2) × 1035 erg s−1, and outflow power (1.3–4.8) × 1038 erg s−1. We also find that: all models with i ≥ 70° fail at least two constraints, as do all models with equal ion and electron temperature;exploratory, non-thermal model sets tend to have higher 2.2 µm flux density;the population of cold electrons is limited by X-ray constraints due to the risk of bremsstrahlung overproduction. In this paper we quantify the temporal variability and image morphology of the horizon-scale emission from Sgr A∗, as observed by the eHT in 2017 April at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. We find that the Sgr A∗ data exhibit variability that exceeds what can be explained by the uncertainties in the data or by the effects of interstellar scattering. The magnitude of this variability can be a substantial fraction of the correlated flux density, reaching ∼100% on some baselines. Through an exploration of simple geometric source models, we demonstrate that ring-like morphologies provide better fits to the Sgr A∗ data than do other morphologies with comparable complexity. We develop two strategies for fitting static geometric ring models to the time-variable Sgr A∗ data;one strategy fits models to short segments of data over which the source is static and averages these independent fits, while the other fits models to the full dataset using a parametric model for the structural variability power spectrum around the average source structure. Both geometric modeling and image-domain feature extraction techniques determine the ring diameter to be 51.8 ± 2.3 µas (68% credible intervals), with the ring thickness constrained to have an FWHM between ∼30% and 50% of the ring diameter. To bring the diameter measurements to a common physical scale, we calibrate them using synthetic data generated from GRMHD simulations. This calibration constrains the angular size of the gravitational radius to be 4.8+1−047 µas, which we combine with an independent distance measurement from maser parallaxes to determine the mass of Sgr A∗ to be 4.0+1−016 × 106 M. © 2023, CC BY.

We present the first event-horizon-scale images and spatiotemporal analysis of Sgr A∗ taken with the event Horizon Telescope in 2017 April at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Imaging of Sgr A∗ has been conducted through surveys over a wide range of imaging assumptions using the classical CLeAN algorithm, regularized maximum likelihood methods, and a Bayesian posterior sampling method. Different prescriptions have been used to account for scattering effects by the interstellar medium towards the Galactic Center. Mitigation of the rapid intra-day variability that characterizes Sgr A∗ has been carried out through the addition of a "variability noise budget" in the observed visibilities, facilitating the reconstruction of static full-track images. Our static reconstructions of Sgr A∗ can be clustered into four representative morphologies that correspond to ring images with three different azimuthal brightness distributions, and a small cluster that contains diverse non-ring morphologies. Based on our extensive analysis of the effects of sparse (u, v)-coverage, source variability and interstellar scattering, as well as studies of simulated visibility data, we conclude that the event Horizon Telescope Sgr A∗ data show compelling evidence for an image that is dominated by a bright ring of emission with a ring diameter of ∼50 µas, consistent with the expected "shadow" of a 4 × 106M black hole in the Galactic Center located at a distance of 8 kpc. © 2023, CC BY.

We report on the observations of the quasar NRAO 530 with the event Horizon Telescope (eHT) on 2017 April 5−7, when NRAO 530 was used as a calibrator for the eHT observations of Sagittarius A∗. At z = 0.902 this is the most distant object imaged by the eHT so far. We reconstruct the first images of the source at 230 GHz, at an unprecedented angular resolution of ∼ 20 µas, both in total intensity and in linear polarization. We do not detect source variability, allowing us to represent the whole data set with static images. The images reveal a bright feature located on the southern end of the jet, which we associate with the core. The feature is linearly polarized, with a fractional polarization of ∼5-8% and has a sub-structure consisting of two components. Their observed brightness temperature suggests that the energy density of the jet is dominated by the magnetic field. The jet extends over 60 µas along a position angle PA∼ −28◦. It includes two features with orthogonal directions of polarization (electric vector position angle, eVPA), parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis, consistent with a helical structure of the magnetic field in the jet. The outermost feature has a particularly high degree of linear polarization, suggestive of a nearly uniform magnetic field. Future eHT observations will probe the variability of the jet structure on µas scales, while simultaneous multi-wavelength monitoring will provide insight into the high energy emission origin. © 2023, CC BY.

Current deep learning models are mostly task specific and lack a user-friendly interface to operate. We present Meta-eyeFM, a multi-function foundation model that integrates a large language model (LLM) with vision foundation models (VFMs) for ocular disease assessment. Meta-eyeFM leverages a routing mechanism to enable accurate task-specific analysis based on text queries. Using Low Rank Adaptation, we fine-tuned our VFMs to detect ocular and systemic diseases, differentiate ocular disease severity, and identify common ocular signs. The model achieved 100% accuracy in routing fundus images to appropriate VFMs, which achieved ≥82.2% accuracy in disease detection, ≥89% in severity differentiation, ≥76% in sign identification. Meta-eyeFM was 11% to 43% more accurate than Gemini-1.5-flash and ChatGPT-4o LMMs in detecting various eye diseases and comparable to an ophthalmologist. This system offers enhanced usability and diagnostic performance, making it a valuable decision support tool for primary eye care or an online LLM for fundus evaluation. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death ensemble model (CODem) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. Context. Number counts of galaxy clusters across redshift are a powerful cosmological probe, if a precise and accurate reconstruction of the underlying mass distribution is performed - a challenge called mass calibration. With the advent of wide and deep photometric surveys, weak gravitational lensing by clusters has become the method of choice to perform this measurement. Aims. We measure and validate the weak gravitational lensing (WL) signature in the shape of galaxies observed in the first 3 years of the Dark energy Survey (DeS Y3) caused by galaxy clusters and groups selected in the first all-sky survey performed by SRG (Spectrum Roentgen Gamma)/eROSITA (eRASS1). These data are then used to determine the scaling between X-ray photon count rate of the clusters and their halo mass and redshift. Methods. We empirically determine the degree of cluster member contamination in our background source sample. The individual cluster shear profiles are then analysed with a Bayesian population model that self-consistently accounts for the lens sample selection and contamination, and includes marginalization over a host of instrumental and astrophysical systematics. To quantify the accuracy of the mass extraction of that model, we perform mass measurements on mock cluster catalogs with realistic synthetic shear profiles. The first images of the black holes in Sgr A∗ and M87∗ have created a wide range of new scientific opportunities in gravitational physics, compact objects, and relativistic astrophysics. We discuss here the scientific opportunities that arise from the rich data sets that have already been obtained and the new data sets that will be obtained, exploiting a wide range of technical advances, including observational agility, receiver upgrades, and the addition of new stations. This document provides a 5-year framework for event Horizon Telescope (eHT) science structured around four fundamental questions that are used to prioritize the analysis of existing data, guide technical upgrades, and determine the optimal use of future observational opportunities with eHT, ALMA, and multi-wavelength facilities. Through enhancements over this period, the eHT will create the first movie of M87∗ connecting black hole and jet physics, provide detailed studies of the structure and dynamics of Sgr A∗, characterize the magnetospheres of both systems through polarimetric imaging, and explore the spacetime properties of black holes with greater precision and range. © 2024, CC BY.

Context. Many active galaxies harbor powerful relativistic jets, however, the detailed mechanisms of their formation and acceleration remain poorly understood. Aims. To investigate the area of jet acceleration and collimation with the highest available angular resolution, we study the innermost region of the bipolar jet in the nearby low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINeR) galaxy NGC 1052. Methods. We combined observations of NGC 1052 taken with VLBA, GMVA, and eHT over one week in the spring of 2017. Our study is focused on the size and continuum spectrum of the innermost region containing the central engine and the footpoints of both jets. We employed a synchrotron-self absorption model to fit the continuum radio spectrum and we combined the size measurements from close to the central engine out to ∼1 pc to study the jet collimation. Results. For the first time, NGC 1052 was detected with the eHT, providing a size of the central region in-between both jet bases of 43 µas perpendicular to the jet axes, corresponding to just around 250 RS (Schwarzschild radii). This size estimate supports previous studies of the jets expansion profile which suggest two breaks of the profile at around 3 × 103 RS and 1 × 104 RS distances to the core. Furthermore, we estimated the magnetic field to be 1.25 Gauss at a distance of 22 µas from the central engine by fitting a synchrotron-self absorption spectrum to the innermost emission feature, which shows a spectral turn-over at ∼130 GHz. Assuming a purely poloidal magnetic field, this implies an upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the event horizon of 2.6 × 104 Gauss, which is consistent with previous measurements. Conclusions. The complex, low-brightness, double-sided jet structure in NGC 1052 makes it a challenge to detect the source at millimeter (mm) wavelengths.
