Deterministic Uncertainty Estimation for Multi-Modal Regression With Deep Neural Networks

Prediction interval (PI) is a common method to represent predictive uncertainty in regression by deep neural networks. This paper proposes an extension of the prediction interval by using a union of disjoint intervals. Since previous PI methods assumed a single-interval PI (one lower and upper bound), it suffers from performance degradation in uncertainty estimation when the conditional density function is multi-modal. This paper demonstrates the need to include multi-modality in uncertainty estimation for regression. To address the issue, we propose a novel method that generates a union of disjoint PI's. With UCI benchmark experiments, the proposed method is shown to improve over current state-of-the-art uncertainty quantification methods, reducing an average PI width by over 27%. With qualitative experiments, it is shown that multi-modality often exists in real-world datasets, and our method produces high-quality PI's compared to existing PI methods.

Exploring challenges in implementing antimicrobial stewardship interventions across eight African nations: A multi case study

Introduction The Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) programme, funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care's Fleming Fund and managed by the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) and Tropical Health and Education trust (THET), currently supports 24 health partnerships (HPs) developing and implementing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions in 73 health facilities across eight African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. This study assesses the barriers and challenges experienced by HPs in designing and implementing AMS interventions. Method A qualitative case-study design was adopted, with data collection undertaken between June 2023 and March 2024 by in-person (THET and CPA) visits. Data collection methods included non-participant observations, formal and informal feedback from key stakeholders, semi-structured interviews and focus groups. Interview guides were designed based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research to encourage systematic data collection and reporting, track progress and identify barriers encountered during implementation of AMS interventions. Qualitative data underwent thematic analysis using NVivo 14®. Results Since the introduction of CwPAMS, a total of 15 AMS committees, 52 Point Prevalence Surveys (PPS) on antimicrobial use, and 21 AMS action plans have been developed and established across 73 health facilities, with 884 healthcare professionals completing AMS training. Key barriers reported by HPs included: challenges in PPS data collection due to lack, or inadequacy, of electronic patient record systems; delays in permissions and approvals (e.g. ethical approval); competing priorities (e.g. institutional priorities vs quality improvement initiatives); limited funding; challenges with procurement of medicines/reagents; over-ambitious projects as well as monitoring and evaluation plans. How Nursing Home Professionals Frame the Perspective on Residents' Safety Management: A Q-Methodology Approach

AimTo identify a frame of reference for resident safety management in nursing *** study was conducted using Q-methodology to identify shared perspectives about resident safety management among nursing home professionals. Data were collected from 13 May 2023, through 29 August 2023. Thirty-four professionals, including nurses, care workers, social workers and physical therapists, classified Q-samples into a normal distribution grid through Q-sorting. Data analysis was performed using the PQmethod programme. Q-factors were interpreted by integrating interview transcripts, demographic data and factor arrays that organised the analysis *** analysis included the Q-sort of 33 professionals, with an average age of 46.03 years and 6.53 years of nursing home experience, after excluding one individual who did not fit any Q-factor. A Cultural-Historical Analysis of Marsick and Watkins' Informal and Incidental learning Model

This paper uses Vygotsky's cultural-historical development theory to examine the theoretical lineages that influenced Marsick and Watkins' (1990) model of informal and incidental learning. After discussing the context of each influence, the paper applies cultural-historical development theory to the many updates that Marsick, Watkins, and collaborators have contributed, moving the model into a theory. In 1990, Marsick and Watkins named the work of Dewey, Lindeman, Lewin, Knowles, Polanyi, and Argyris and Schon as primary influences for the formation of their informal and incidental learning model. By focusing on the context of each of the theorists who influenced the original Marsick and Watkins model and sketching the connections between the theorists' ideas and experiences, this paper fulfills the twofold purpose of exploring the context of Marsick and Watkins' model-turned-theory and providing a model for Vygotsky-informed literature reviews.

Understanding collaborative and coordinated care in a mental health and well-being context: Essential elements for effective service integration

Multiple system reforms in Australia, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), are changing mental health (MH) and disability-related service provision, whilst policy drivers continue to require service integration. This has necessitated service providers discovering new ways of working collaboratively to achieve an integrated model of care. This qualitative study examined what does and does not work to support collaborative and coordinated care (CCC), as essential components of service integration. The study sample (n = 59) included four cohorts: health and community service leaders (n = 16), staff (n = 23);MH service consumers with complex needs (n = 10), and MH carers (n = 10). Thematic analysis from interviews was applied to data from each cohort to identify overarching themes that described the lived experience of current CCC delivery. COREQ and EQUATOR guidelines were applied to reporting the findings. Themes emphasized CCC is enabled by the development and sustainability of positive working relationships, and depth of knowledge across health and community services. Unnavigable service systems, stigmatization, perceived power differentials, multiple and rapid service reforms and Fee-For-Service (FFS) models provide significant barriers to CCC. Recommendations include the need for accessible service navigation, consumer-friendly service environments, a stable workforce, standardization of knowledge across sectors, outcome measures and funding attached to CCC as part of a raft of potential changes.

Overcoming Confounding Bias in Causal Discovery Using Minimum Redundancy and Maximum Relevancy Constraint

Causal discovery is the process of modeling cause and effect relationships among features. Unlike traditional model-based approaches, that rely on fitting data to the models, methods of causal discovery determine the causal structure from data. In clinical and EHR data analysis, causal discovery is used to identify dependencies among features that are difficult to estimate using model-based approaches. The resultant structures are represented as Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) consisting of nodes and arcs. Here, the direction of the arcs in a DAG indicates the influence of one feature over the other. These dependencies are fundamental to the discovery of novel insights obtained from data. However, causal discovery solely relies on establishing feature dependencies based on their conditional dependencies, that could lead to inaccurate inferences brought about by confounding bias. Our contribution in this work is 'Non-Confounding Causal Discovery' (NCCD), a framework aimed at overcoming confounding bias leveraging maximum relevancy and minimum redundancy between features using the concepts of information theory. The work presented uses threshold conditioned values on which the features in the graphical structure are connected to one another. Validation was carried out on three clinical trial benchmark datasets and compared the results against the previously known Naive Bayes (NB) and Tree Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN) algorithms. We observe a reduction in the complexity of the graph, evidenced by a decrease in the number of arcs. Notably, the graphs generated through NCCD exhibited a capacity to eliminate confounding dependencies while concurrently preserving the overall score of the network.

This paper offers a fresh perspective on the COVID-19 situation of higher education institutions from a disaster-management perspective. Based on conceptual models of disaster management theory and with the help of a longitudinal multi-method, multi-perspective approach, this research contributes to better understanding the challenges during and "after" such a crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic started with a single event (e.g. campuses are shut down because of a dangerous disease) and transformed into a situation where new events (like new virus mutants) deepened the crisis during the hypothetical restabilisation phases. This includes the switch from a very coherent problem perception of all institutional actors in the beginning, to different and conflicting viewpoints and preferences over time. The paper argues that these developments contribute to the already fragmented realities of higher education institutions, e.g. by never giving institutions the time to agree on how to deal with the abundance of options in the long run.

An Investigation of a Customizable Entertaining Animated E-Book: A Gender Difference Perspective

Game-based learning, electronic books (e-books), and animations offer different advantages and serve distinct purposes. Consequently, this study aimed to propose an entertaining animated e-book by seamlessly integrating these three information technologies. Additionally, customization was incorporated into the entertaining animated e-book to accommodate learners' diverse preferences. In other words, a Customizable Entertaining Animated E-book (CEAE) was implemented in this study, which also aimed to investigate the influences of gender differences on their reactions to the CEAE. Results indicated that the CEAE could reduce gender differences, in terms of test performance and task performance. However, differences between males and females still existed in learning behavior and gaming behavior. More specifically, males and females preferred to use different scaffolding hints and choose different gaming modes. Based on these findings, we introduced a framework, which could work as a valuable reference for instructors to implement e-books, GBL, and animations in educational settings. This framework could also provide guidelines for designers to personalize entertaining animated e-books.

Designing and delivering MOOCs to motivate participants for self-directed learning

Self-directed learning (SDL) is necessary for successful learning in MOOCs. Motivation is one of the critical elements of SDL. This mixed-method study examined the design and delivery of MOOCs to motivate learners for SDL. The data collection methods included semi-structured interviews with 22 MOOC instructors, a document review of 22 MOOCs, and an online survey with 198 participants. The researchers found that MOOC instructors valued motivating learners for SDL. The strategies to motivate learners included entering motivations (i.e. decisions to participate in a course) and task motivations (i.e. learners' persistence in learning activities). For entering motivation, MOOC instructors used strategies, such as identifying the value and needs of learning, increasing self-efficacy, and using incentives. For task motivation, MOOC instructors adopted engaging instructional strategies, well-designed learning materials, immediate and constructive feedback, and social interaction. Besides, technology played an essential role in motivating learners. Implications for instructors and instructional designers were discussed at the end of the paper.

This research aims to explore the childfree discourse constructed by the two leading online news outlets in Indonesia, namely *** and ***. I argue that online news outlets construct a discourse that aims to discriminate childfree women and the representation of women in the issue of childfree is a media instrument to reproduce the ideology of pronatalism. By using the corpus assisted critical discourse studies method to analyze 137 news articles, this research found that online news outlets produce childfree discourse as a deviation, a source of problems, and a feminist agenda. In these discourses, childfree women are represented as selfish, cold, and incomplete individuals. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that online news outlets in Indonesia do not report the issue of childfree in a neutral and balanced manner. Furthermore, this research discussion seeks to uncover the role of ibuism, as a pronatalist ideology in the Indonesian context, behind the construction of these gendered discourses. © 2024 Asian Media Information and Communication Centre.
