In this paper, we looked into two issues in pattern recognition using neural networks trained by back propagation (BP), namely inefficient learning and insufficient generalization. We observed that these phenomena are partly caused by the way the hidden layer units responds to the inputs. In order to solve the issues, we introduced regularization of the hidden layer unit response which amounts to suppressing the correlation among the response of the hidden layer units, and pruning the unit with the method unit fusion. The results of using the proposed technique were compared with the case of conventional technique in pattern recognition problems. From the results of the experiments, the rate of correct recognition increased when using regularization in the hidden layer unit response is performed, and it turned out that the required number of training epochs also decreases.

Three-phase voltage unbalance has long been a problem in electric power system. It not only increases the system losses but has detrimental effects on three-phase rotating machines. This paper deals with the pulsating torque of an induction motor caused by Steinmetz connection which has been used for a three-phase motor operating on a single-phase supply. An analytical model based on the positive-sequence and negative sequence equivalent circuits of the motor is developed, and the pulsating torque as a function of the capacitance and slip rate are then derived. The proposed analytical method is verified by the Universal Machine Model of the EMTP. Finally it is provided to show the relation between site measurement, mathematical analysis and EMTP simulation. There has been a considerable increase in the population proportion of senior people among global population. Fall often happens among these senior people, which is also the leading cause of their death. A real-time fall detection system may help us to detect fall events among elderly people in time and reduce the overall casualty rate. This paper proposed a home-based, real-time fall detection system that not only can distinguish up to 4 different kinds of fall events (forward, backward, rightward and leftward), but is also portable, low-cost and with high accuracy rate. The system includes a real-time fall detection band, a home server, and GSM instant messaging function which can transfer fall alert, send emergency help messages.

Advances in deep learning have significantly impacted various sectors, including agriculture, by improving efficiency and sustainability. Computer vision-based plant disease detection that utilizes deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) has replaced manual methods that require specialized skills. Vision Transformers (ViTs) with self-attention mechanisms excel at recognizing complex patterns in images of diseased plants, enabling early detection and more effective management. This study conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate the use of feature fusion-based transformer algorithms in plant disease detection and to identify current research trends, challenges, and future opportunities. The results show that ViTs can improve accuracy and efficiency in plant disease diagnosis, particularly under diverse environmental conditions. However, the adoption of this technology faces obstacles such as the need for large annotated datasets, significant computational costs, and variability in field conditions that can affect model performance. This research highlights the need for further innovation to address these challenges and expand the accessibility and reliability of deep learning-based plant disease detection for the global agricultural sector.

Voice synthesizers still present several challenges in the speech of mathematical content, as spoken mathematics has quite peculiar rules. In the synthesized speech, pauses help blind and visually impaired students identify the limits of mathematical operators and subexpressions. However, most studies on pauses define them uniformly or use simple punctuation marks to force the synthesizer to introduce pauses in certain parts of the expression. Speech is a dynamic process and pauses in expressions also need to be dynamic to make the synthetic speech of expressions more natural, as this can help in memorizing this type of content. This work proposed a dynamic model of pauses for mathematical expressions. Collected math expressions spoken by teachers were used to create the model. These expressions were useful for identifying patterns and creating a linear regression model. Blind and visually impaired students evaluated the model. Some improvements were observed when we compared the synthesized mathematical expressions with the model and Audiomath, the parameter tool used in this study.

In this study, small disk ultrasonic transducers were used to develop a very small ultrasonic flowmeter with a measuring pipe diameter of less than 1 mm. The feasibility of using an ultrasonic flowmeter to measure a liquid flow rate below 1 mL/min was investigated experimentally. Calibration results of the developed ultrasonic flowmeter were almost all scattered within the range predicted from the standard deviation of measurements. The flowmeter can stably measure a flow rate of less than 1 mL/min with a standard deviation of about 0.01 mL/min. This result suggests that the flowmeter can be very useful for semiconductor, medical and chemical industries.

"BIM (building information modeling)" and "sustainability" are two frequently used words in construction and academia today. BIM is a design-oriented tool, which generates a virtual three-dimensional model of a project. Sustainability refers to prudent use of earth's natural resources, and construction sustainability is the application of this principle to building activities. Societies in general and the construction industry in particular--one of the largest in terms of natural resources consumed and waste produced--place high hopes on BIM and the principles of sustainability to reduce consumption and waste and to increase industry productivity. BIM's capabilities and limitations, currently more focused on model creation and energy simulations, are not well understood as they relate to construction sustainability and its goals. No method yet exists to evaluate BIM's contribution comprehensively to construction sustainability goals. This study presents a construction sustainability goals contribution matrix for BIM. The matrix indicates that this contribution may be more limited than it is commonly thought.
