Hazard Assessment and Remediation Tool for Simulation-Based Healthcare Facility Design Testing

Objectives: To develop an objective, structured observational tool to enable identification and measurement of hazards in the built environment when applied to audiovisual recordings of simulations by trained raters. Background: Simulation-based facility design testing is increasingly used to optimize safety of healthcare environments, often relying on participant debriefing or direct observation by human factors experts. Methods: Hazard categories were defined through participant debriefing and detailed review of pediatric intensive care unit in situ simulation videos. Categories were refined and operational definitions developed through iterative coding and review. Hazard detection was optimized through the use of structured coding protocols and optimized camera angles. Results: Six hazard categories were defined: (1) slip/trip/fall/injury risk, impaired access to (2) patient or (3) equipment, (4) obstructed path, (5) poor visibility, and (6) infection risk. Analysis of paired and individual coding demonstrated strong overall reliability (0.89 and 0.85, Gwet's AC(1)). Reliability coefficients for each hazard category were >0.8 for all except obstructed path (0.76) for paired raters. Among individual raters, reliability coefficients were >0.8, except for slip/trip/fall/injury risk (0.68) and impaired access to equipment (0.77). Conclusions: Hazard Assessment and Remediation Tool (HART) provides a framework to identify and quantify hazards in the built environment. The tool is highly reliable when applied to direct video review of simulations by either paired raters or trained single clinical raters. Subsequent work will (1) assess the tool's ability to discriminate between rooms with different physical attributes, (2) develop strategies to apply HART to improve facility design, and (3) assess transferability to non-ICU acute care environments.

4D-BIM to enhance construction waste reuse and recycle planning: Case studies on concrete and drywall waste streams

Despite pressing attention on construction waste management (CWM) issues, low rates of construction waste (CW) reuse and recycling (R&R) remain a limitation in construction projects. In recent years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has gained momentum for CWM purposes;its data-richness, visualization, and simulation capabilities provide an opportunity to enhance CW R&R planning at the project level. In this context, this study proposes temporal-based algorithms integrated with 4D-BIM for the planning of concrete and drywall waste R&R throughout construction projects. Two case studies from Central Texas were used for the demonstration of the algorithms, and estimates were validated with ground truth data and literature values from different projects in North America. The overarching objective of the proposed algorithms is to streamline estimation and visual planning of CW for on-site reuse, and off-site recycling - therefore promoting a more proactive and schedule-based CWM plan. In addition, the approach improves team communication around CWM goals of the project. Moreover, through the use of 4D-BIM, on-site waste reuse opportunities are planned in advance, thus, improving resource recovery and minimizing waste disposal in landfills. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Transforming inherent safety risk in the construction Industry: A safety risk generation and control model

To enhance the assessment and understanding of why accidents occur, several accident causation models have been developed for the construction industry. These models successfully describe accident causation with comprehensive causal factors and enable the support of accident investigation methods. With growing recognition of proactive safety management, a number of safety risk analysis methods have been introduced with construction domain knowledge. However, most current safety risk analysis methods in the construction industry lack a theoretical background. This study proposes a safety risk generation and control model that describes the phenomenon of dynamic safety risk with construction domain knowledge. Based on extensive literature review and analysis of fatality reports, the proposed model addresses how the inherent safety risk of a worker can be transformed by different measurable risk factors such as activity resource and temporal and spatial risk factors, as well as management control. Successful implementation of the proposed model is expected to improve the understanding of safety risk and provide a theoretical basis for the development of practical safety risk analysis methods in the construction industry.

Effectively managing human resources is an essential part of achieving the goals of any project. It can be challenging, however, to identify and then classify human resources into appropriate roles, particularly in the early stages of a project. To address this issue, a modified approach for managing project human resources is proposed that focuses on reducing/eliminating the omission and/or misclassification of these resources. Given the motivation from a case example of a process improvement project, this approach was developed to support the inclusion/reclassification of project team members and/or project stakeholders throughout the life cycle of a project. The focus of our proposed approach leverages learning opportunities throughout the initial stages of a project as project management tools and process improvement methods are used to investigate a problem and integrates that knowledge within the project through an augmented change request process. More specifically, the proposed approach equips project teams with the knowledge needed to question the appropriateness of a project’s human resources and their classification into various roles. By improving human resource management practices within projects, this research aims to help organizations enhance their project success rates.

African Shovel-snout snakes (Prosymna Gray, 1849) are small, semi-fossorial snakes with a unique com-pressed and beak-like snout. Prosymna occur mainly in the savanna of sub-Saharan Africa. Of the 16 cur-rently recognised species, four occur in Angola: Prosymna ambigua Bocage, 1873, P. angolensis Boulenger, 1915, P. frontalis (Peters, 1867), and P. visseri FitzSimons, 1959. The taxonomical status and evolutionary relationships of P. angolensis have never been assessed due to the lack of genetic material. This species is known to occur from western Angola southwards to Namibia, and eastwards to Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The species shows considerable variation in dorsal colouration across its range, and with the lower ventral scales count, an 'eastern race' was suggested. In recent years, Prosymna material from dif-ferent parts of Angola has been collected, and with phylogenetic analysis and High Resolution X-ray Computed Tomography, the taxonomic status of these populations can be reviewed. Strong phylogenetic evidence was found to include the angolensis subgroup as part of the larger sundevalli group, and the existence of three phylogenetic lineages within the angolensis subgroup were identified, which each exhibit clear morphological and colouration differences. One of these lineages is assigned to the nominotypical P. angolensis and the other two described as new species, one of which corroborates the distinct eastern population previously detected. These results reinforce that a considerable part of Angolan herpetological diversity is still to be described and the need for further studies.

An application of metadata-based image retrieval system for facility management

For facility management, photography is an efficient and accurate method of recording the physical state of infrastructure. However, without an effective organizational scheme, the difficulty of retrieving relevant photos from historical databases can become overly burdensome for highly complex or long-lived assets. To make strategic decisions, it is crucial to retrieve the right information from a plurality of sources in a timely manner. The main objective of this paper is to present a method for organizing and retrieving photos from massive facility management photo databases using photo-metadata: photographed location, camera perspective, and image semantic content information. Indoor localization experiments were performed using Bluetooth technology to infer the location information. Perspective is inferred from the device's on-board inertial measurement unit (IMU). Image semantic content is inferred using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based deep learning algorithm. Fusing these three features, seven query options were provided for the user when retrieving images. Leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a process and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a framework, this paper also envisions a federated information management by connecting 2D and 3D facility assets with our real-world map which can be smoothly bridged with our image retrieval system. The realization of the integrated application with BIM and GIS is significantly beneficial for the facility management domain by advancing the understanding of projects in a broader view with a federated data platform. In this research, the framework is illustrated with 21 institutional buildings within the University of Texas at Austin's main campus, and the authors conclude that the proposed metadata-based image retrieval system can ultimately enhance the better-informed decision-making process through rapid information retrieval.

Automated building change detection with amodal completion of point clouds

When updating digital models of existing buildings, changes in the built environment are detected by comparing outdated BIMs with captured point clouds representing current conditions. Here we show that point cloud completion (i.e. automated filling-in of missing data) improves the accuracy of change detection. We perform point cloud completion using a hierarchical deep variational autoencoder (a type of artificial neural network) modified to include skip connections between the convolution and deconvolution layers. The resulting receiver operating characteristic curve shows that completion boosts change detection performance from a total area under the curve of 0.55 to 0.75. Completion achieves this by eliminating differences between the BIM and point cloud inputs that are a consequence of incompleteness while distilling the differences due to building change. We anticipate that automated change detection methods with resilience to imperfect data will become more critical as automated building analyses become increasingly abstracted from data collection.

This paper reports on a comprehensive study, which has investigated the approaches, methods and tools being deployed in implementing living labs among higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world. Two methods were employed. First, a bibliometric analysis of the current emphasis given to living labs in a sustainable development context and in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Second, an empirical study aimed at identifying the use levels of living labs at HEIs. This was accomplished through an analysis of selected case studies that showcased successful approaches to SDGs implementation with living labs, and resulted in a framework for action. There are three main findings from these analyses. The first is that the multidisciplinary character of living labs in the context of sustainable development needs to be considered, to maximize their impacts. Second, most of the studied living labs focus on SDGs 4 and 11, which deal with providing quality education and ensuring the sustainable development of cities and communities. Third, the challenges encountered in the implementation of living labs refer to (1) the complexities in institutional administration, (2) the tensions between different groups of interest that need to be addressed by enhanced communication, and (3) the necessity to pay attention to the demand of using sustainability and innovation as a strategy in the operations of living labs. The paper draws from the experiences and lessons learned and suggests specific measures, which will improve the use of living labs as more systemic tools towards the implementation of the SDGs.

Quantifying geographic heterogeneity in TB incidence and the potential impact of geographically targeted interventions in South and North City Corporations of Dhaka, Bangladesh: a model-based study

In rapidly growing and high-burden urban centres, identifying tuberculosis (TB) transmission hotspots and understanding the potential impact of interventions can inform future control and prevention strategies. Using data on local demography, TB reports and patient reporting patterns in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Bangladesh, between 2010 and 2017, we developed maps of TB reporting rates across wards in DSCC and DNCC and identified wards with high rates of reported TB (i.e. 'hotspots') in DSCC and DNCC. We developed ward-level transmission models and estimated the potential epidemiological impact of three TB interventions: active case finding (ACF), mass preventive therapy (PT) and a combination of ACF and PT, implemented either citywide or targeted to high-incidence hotspots. There was substantial geographic heterogeneity in the estimated TB incidence in both DSCC and DNCC: incidence in the highest-incidence wards was over ten times higher than in the lowest-incidence wards in each city corporation. ACF, PT and combined ACF plus PT delivered to 10% of the population reduced TB incidence by a projected 7%-9%, 13%-15% and 19%-23% over five years, respectively. Targeting TB hotspots increased the projected reduction in TB incidence achieved by each intervention 1.4- to 1.8-fold. The geographical pattern of TB notifications suggests high levels of ongoing TB transmission in DSCC and DNCC, with substantial heterogeneity at the ward level. Interventions that reduce transmission are likely to be highly effective and incorporating notification data at the local level can further improve intervention efficiency.

Wildlife, fire, and forestry: Understanding the spatial and temporal relationships between caribou habitat and disturbance

Across the boreal forest, timber harvesting and wildfire convert mature forests to early seral stands resulting in habitat loss for specialists like woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) and habitat gain for generalists like moose (Alces americanus) and bears (black bears: Ursus americanus, grizzly bears: Ursus arctos). However, there have been few studies on how post-disturbance vegetation communities differ in their value as habitat for these large wildlife species and whether differences vary among disturbance and ecosystem types. We investigated the differential effects of clearcut harvest and wildfire on the habitat of caribou, moose, and bears across the boreal and foothills forests of Alberta, Canada. During 2021 and 2022, we collected tree and understory data from 251 harvested and 264 burned stands (0–40 years post-disturbance), as well as 256 stands with recent caribou use (>40 years post-disturbance). We used generalized linear models to quantify availability of caribou, moose, and bear forage as a function of forest attributes (e.g., basal area, coarse woody debris, soil depth), and assessed differences among harvest, wildfire, and caribou use sites. We found that forest attributes that promoted forage for one species limited forage of another. For example, basal area of deciduous trees was positively related to moose forage and negatively related to caribou winter forage. Our results demonstrate that regardless of disturbance type, regenerating forests can provide seasonal forage for caribou, moose, and bears. Effective habitat management will need to consider not only the dynamic availability of forage following disturbance, but also how these changes in forage influence the spatial interactions of herbivores and predators. © 2025 The Authors
