Introduction Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience recurrent acute vaso-occlusive events (VOE) beginning in infancy, that can be prevented with hydroxyurea therapy (Wang W. Lancet 2011), while chronic organ dysfunction becomes evident in adolescence and progresses with age. Nutritional insufficiencies and deficiencies occur in SCD (e.g., zinc, vitamin D and B6), and are associated with greater frequency of VOE (McCaskill M. Nutrients 2018, Martyres D. PBC 2016, Schall J. J Pediatr 2004). While infants and young children (age <6) are particularly vulnerable to the effects of malnutrition (e.g., developmental delay and cognitive impairment), the environmental components leading to decreased food access have not been investigated relative to the impact on their healthcare outcomes. We tested the hypothesis that restricted access to healthy food sources is associated with increased SCD-related acute care utilization among children with SCD younger than age 6 years, despite treatment with hydroxyurea. Methods Participants were recruited from the IRB-approved longitudinal clinical cohort study, Sickle Cell Clinical research and Intervention program (Hankins J. PBC 2018). Home addresses were mapped to census-tract environmental data from the US Food Access research Atlas (USDA ERS 2017). Food deserts were defined as “low income census tracts where at least 33% (minimum of 500 people/tract) of the population live >1.0 (urban area) or >10 (rural area) miles from a grocery store or a supermarket” (Food Access, USDA ERS 2019). Three main outcomes: emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and acute care utilization (ACU=ED + hospitalizations) from a VOE, were collected from birth to age 6 and analyzed as cross-sectional outcomes at age 6-years. Translating Social science Skill Sets for Careers Beyond Academia

作者： Laila Sorurbakhsh Laila Sorurbakhsh (sorurbakhsh@gwu.edu) holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Houston (2012) with specializations in Comparative Politics American Politics and Quantitative Methods. Her research focuses on NGOs particularly the integration of risk research innovation and uncertainty in policymaking. Laila is currently an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Master of International Policy and Practice program and Director of Online Education at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University.

While the academic community has embraced the social sciences as a necessary and valuable discipline, translating skills developed in academia to the broader community continues to be a challenge. The challenge presents itself more as a lack of understanding as to what a social scientist does than a lack of applicable skills. In fact, by the discipline’s very goal of aligning complex problems with scientific methodology, the social scientist gains a wide range of skills that span market demand. These skills include those designed to persuade through effective communication, those designed to question status quo assumptions and lay the foundation for better understanding, and those designed to demonstrate leadership through mentoring, coaching, and teaching. I identify at least eighteen directly translatable skills along these three themes that benefit those who transition from academic to practical environments.

Background Transportation barriers significantly limit participation in breast cancer screening trials among Hispanic women, exacerbating disparities in breast cancer outcomes and underrepresentation in clinical research. Rideshare programs have emerged as a potential solution, but their long-term sustainability remains underexplored. Understanding sustainability capacity is critical to ensuring these programs can address structural barriers, promote health equity, and improve outcomes for underserved populations. The aim of this study is to evaluate sustainability capacity of a no-cost rideshare program and to identify potential strategies to support sustainability. Methods This explanatory, sequential, mixed-methods study evaluated the sustainability capacity of a no-cost rideshare program aimed at increasing Hispanic women’s participation in the Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST). Analyses and data integration were guided by the Capacity for Sustainability Framework. Average domain scores on the program Sustainability Assessment Tool (PSAT) survey were calculated ranging from 1 to 7 with higher scores indicating higher levels for each domain, and structured interviews were analyzed using a rapid qualitative approach. PSAT and interview findings were integrated using a joint display. Results Survey responses (N=37) indicated strengths in environmental support (mean score: 5.4) and partnerships (6.0), but challenges in funding stability (4.2) and strategic planning (4.5). Interview findings emphasized the importance of program champions and collaborative partnerships, while highlighting gaps in securing diverse funding sources and engaging institutional leadership in strategic planning. Participants identified opportunities to strengthen communication, evaluate program impact, and adapt processes to meet evolving needs. Statistical estimates from survey samples have traditionally been obtained via design-based estimators. In many cases, these estimators tend to work well for quantities such as population totals or means, but can fall short as sample sizes become small. In today’s information age, there is a strong demand for more granular estimates. To meet this demand, using a Bayesian pseudo-likelihood, we propose a computationally efficient unit-level modeling approach for non-Gaussian data collected under informative sampling designs. Specifically, we focus on binary and multinomial data. Our approach is both multivariate and multiscale, incorporating spatial dependence at the area-level. We illustrate our approach through an empirical simulation study and through a motivating application to health insurance estimates using the American Community Survey. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Heat exchangers are widely utilized in different thermal systems for diverse industrial aspects. The selection of HEx depends on the thermal efficiency, operating load, size, flexibility in operation, compatibility with working fluids, better temperature and flow controls, and comparatively low capital and maintenance costs. Heat transfer intensification of heat exchangers can be fulfilled using passive, active, or combined approaches. Utilizing nanofluids as working fluids for heat exchangers have evolved recently. The performance of heat exchangers employed different nanofluids depends mainly on the characteristics and improvement of thermophysical properties. Regarding the unique behavior of different nanofluids, researchers have attended noteworthy progress. The current study reviews and summarizes the recent implementations carried out on utilizing nanofluids in different types of heat exchangers, including plate heat exchangers, double-pipe heat exchangers, shell and tube heat exchangers, and cross-flow heat exchangers. The results showed that nanofluids with enhanced thermal conductivity, although accompanied by a considerable decrease in the heat capacity and raising viscosity, has resulted in performance enhancement of different heat exchangers types. So, the performance evaluation criterion that combines the thermal enhancement and increases the pumping power for any type of heat exchangers is requisite to evaluate the overall performance properly. The challenges and opportunities for future work of heat transfer and fluid flow for different types of heat exchangers utilizing nanofluids are discussed and presented. © 2021 The Author(s)

Malignant or aggressive primary musculoskeletal tumors are rare and encompass a wide variety of bone and soft tissue tumors. Given the most common site for metastasis from these primary musculoskeletal tumors is to the lung, chest imaging is integral in both staging and surveillance. Extrapulmonary metastases are rarely encountered with only a few exceptions. Following primary tumor resection, surveillance of the primary tumor site is generally recommended. Local surveillance imaging recommendations differ between primary tumors of bone origin versus soft tissue origin. This document consolidates the current evidence and expert opinion for the imaging staging and surveillance of these tumors into five clinical scenarios. The ACR Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed annually by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guideline development and revision process support the systematic analysis of the medical literature from peer-reviewed journals. Established methodology principles such as Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation or GRADE are adapted to evaluate the evidence. The RAND/ UCLA Appropriateness Method User Manual provides the methodology to determine the appropriateness of imaging and treatment procedures for specific clinical scenarios. In those instances in which peer-reviewed literature is lacking or equivocal, experts may be the primary evidentiary source available to formulate a recommendation.

Background: Regional gray matter volume (GMV) differences between individuals with mental disorders and comparison participants may be confounded by co-occurring disorders. To disentangle disorder-specific GMV correlates, we conducted a large-scale multidisorder meta-analysis using a novel approach that explicitly models co-occurring disorders. Methods: We systematically reviewed voxel-based morphometry studies indexed in PubMed and Scopus up to January 2023 that compared adults with major mental disorders (anorexia nervosa, schizophrenia spectrum, anxiety, bipolar, major depressive, obsessive-compulsive, and posttraumatic stress disorders plus attention-deficit/hyperactivity, autism spectrum, and borderline personality disorders) with comparison participants. Two authors independently extracted data and assessed quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. We derived GMV correlates for each disorder using: 1) a multidisorder meta-analysis that accounted for all co-occurring mental disorders simultaneously and 2) separate standard meta-analyses for each disorder in which co-occurring disorders were ignored. We assessed the alterations’ extent, intensity (effect size), and specificity (interdisorder correlations and transdiagnostic alterations) for both approaches. Results: We included 433 studies (499 datasets) involving 19,718 patients and 16,441 comparison participants (51% female, ages 20–67 years). We provide GMV correlate maps for each disorder using both approaches. The novel approach, which accounted for co-occurring disorders, produced GMV correlates that were more focal and disorder specific (less correlated across disorders and fewer transdiagnostic abnormalities). Conclusions: This work offers the most comprehensive atlas of GMV correlates across major mental disorders. Modeling co-occurring disorders yielded more specific correlates, supporting this approach's validity. The atlas NIfTI maps are available online. © 2024 Society of Biological Psychiatry
