In this paper we consider an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission where a human operator and a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are tasked to patrol a road. There are numerous inherent ISR benefits for patrolling a road. For example it might be beneficial to track the suspected movements of enemy troops in a forward operating location. Another example might be to gather intelligence that could then be used, possibly not in real time, to perform change detection, a method that might help with the detection of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The layout of the road, with respect to a fixed known reference point, is assumed to be known a priori. For example the latitude and longitude coordinates of various points along the road would be sufficient. Most UAV autopilots make use of waypoint navigation to control the vehicle. This work investigates one method of optimally choosing the waypoints for the UAVs along the road. The cost function used minimizes the cross-track area error.

This paper demonstrates a simple second-order controller that eliminates scan-induced oscillation and provides integral tracking action. The controller can be retrofitted to any scanning probe microscope with position sensors by implementing a simple digital controller or op-amp circuit. The controller is demonstrated to improve the tracking bandwidth of an NT-MDT scanning probe microscope from 15 Hz (with an integral controller) to 490 Hz while simultaneously improving gain-margin from 2 dB to 7 dB. The penalty on sensor induced positioning noise is minimal. For the Scanning Probe Microscope considered in this paper, the noise is marginally increased from 0.30 nm RMS to 0.39 nm RMS. Open- and closed-loop experimental images of a calibration standard are reported at speeds of 1 and 10 lines per second (with a scanner resonance frequency of 290 Hz). Compared to traditional integral or PID controllers, the proposed controller provides a bandwidth improvement of approximately ten times. This allows faster imaging and less tracking lag at low speeds.

Multi-hop wireless mesh networks (M-WMNs) have recently emerged as an alternative network infrastructure. For M-WMNs to serve as a network infrastructure, the protocol designs for M-WMNs should target a high network capacity. An efficient backoff algorithm is required to achieve a high network capacity. Most of existing works focused on backoff algorithms for infrastructure environment based on IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) or did not consider the features of M-WMN. In this paper, we propose an adaptive backoff algorithm based on the number of contention nodes for an IEEE 802.11 DCF-based M-WMN. The proposed backoff algorithm is founded on cross-layer cooperation between the routing and the medium access control (MAC) layers. The number of contention nodes of a node is obtained from the routing layer, and then this information is used to adaptively adjust the value of the minimum contention window (CW min ) in the backoff mechanism of the MAC protocol. To evaluate the performance of the proposed backoff algorithm and existing ones, computer simulations were performed. The simulation results show that the existing algorithms do not work well in M-WMN and the proposed backoff algorithm outperforms existing ones.

This paper presents a now intelligent approach for adaptive control of non-linear dynamic systems. Based on past researches on emotionally intelligent-control systems, the introduced method is a modified version of Brain Emotional Learning Based Intelligent controller (BELBIC), a physiologically motivated system previously developed and successfully used in control applications. The proposed approach is able to quickly respond to change in environmental and dynamic system and realizes online diroct-adaptivc-control scheme. Showing very good robustness, BELBIC is very simple in implementation and imposes very low computation load on the control system. This modified algorithm has boon successfully applied to real-time longitudinal control of an agile air-to-air missile which has over-changing non-linear dynamics.

Image segmentation is the base of image 3D reconstruction. It is a critical step in image processing. Threshold segmentation is a simple and important method in grayscale image segmentation. Maximum entropy method is a common threshold segmentation method. This method only utilizes gray information. In order to adequately utilize spatial information of greyscale image, an improved 2D entropy segmentation method is proposed. This new method is called PSO-SDAIVE algorithm. In this new method, the computation of 2D entropy is improved. Otherwise, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to solve maximum of improved entropy. Maximum takes as the optimal image segmentation threshold. In this paper, two head CT images are segmented in experiment. Compare with other segmentation method. Experimental results show that this new method can quickly and accurately obtain segmentation threshold. Otherwise, this method has strong anti-noise capability and saves computation time.
