software product families are rarely created right away but they emerge when a domain becomes mature enough to sustain their long-term investments. The typical pattern is to start with a small set of products to quickly enter a new market. As soon as the business proves to be successful new investments are directed to consolidating the software assets. The various products are migrated towards a flexible platform where the assets are shared and new products can be derived from. In order to create and maintain the platform, the organization needs to carry out several activities such as recovering the architectures of single products and product families, designing the reference architecture, isolating the variable parts, and generalizing software components. In this paper, we introduce a product family construction process that exploits related systems and product families, and we describe methods and tools used. We also present an approach for classifying platforms according to platform coverage and variation and describe three techniques to handle variability across single products and whole product families. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The paper presents a case study on augmenting a TriMedia/CPU64 processor with a Reconfigurable (FPGA-based) Functional Unit (RFU). We first propose an extension of the TriMedia/CPU64 architecture, which consists of a RFU and its associated instructions. Then, we address the computation of the 8 × 8 IDCT on such extended TriMedia, and propose a scheme to implement an 8-point IDCT operation on the RFU. Further, we address the decoding of Variable Length Codes and describe the FPGA implementation of a Variable Length Decoder (VLD) computing facility. When mapped on anACEX EP1K100 FPGA from Altera, our 8-point IDCT exhibits a latency of 16 and a recovery of 2 Tri-Media cycles, and occupies 42% of the FPGA’s logic array blocks. The proposed VLD exhibits a latency of 7 TriMedia cycles when mapped on the same FPGA, and utilizes 6 of its embedded array blocks. By using the 8-point IDCT computing facility, an 8×8 IDCT including all overheads can be computed with the throughput of 1/32 IDCT/cycle. Also, with the proposedVLD computing facility, a single DCT coefficient can be decoded in 11 cycles including all overheads. Simulation results indicate that by configuring each of the 8-point IDCT andVLD computing facilities on a different FPGA context, and by activating the contexts as needed, the augmented TriMedia can perform MPEG macroblock parsing followed up by a pel reconstruction with an improvement of 20-25% over the standard TriMedia. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The ability for providing a hardware platform which can be customized on a per-application basis under software control has established Reconfigurable Computing (RC) as a new computing paradigm. A machine employing the RC paradigm is referred to as a Field-Programmable Custom Computing Machine (FCCM). So far, the FCCMs have been classified according to implementation criteria. For the previous classifications do not reveal the entire meaning of the RC paradigm, we propose to classify the FCCMs according to architectural criteria. To analyze the phenomena inside FCCMs, we introduce a formalism based on microcode, in which any custom operation performed by a field-programmed computing facility is executed as a microprogram with two basic stages: SET CONFIGURATION and EXECUTE CUSTOM OPERATION. Based on the SET/EXECUTE formalism, we then propose an architectural-based taxonomy of FCCMs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Domain engineering (DE) is an increasingly popular process for efficiently producing software. DE uses detailed knowledge of a particular application domain to define rigorously a family of software products within that domain. We describe a methodology for precise quantitative measurement of DE impact on software change efforts. The methodology employs measures of small software changes to determine the effect of DE. We illustrate this approach in a detailed case study of DE in a telecommunications product. In the particular case the change effort was dramatically reduced. The methodology can precisely measure cost savings in change effort and is simple and inexpensive since it relies on information automatically collected by version control systems.

We believe in terms of information service systems that one of the best ways to develop a large scale database service system is to integrate the service capability of the Web and the data management facility of database systems in a compliment and fashion. In such integration a database gateway is the core component; the database gateway accesses database systems to serve the requests represented by using the Web technology. BADA-III/Web is a gateway that integrates the service capability of the Web and an OODBMS called BADA-III in a complementary manner. We describe our design and implementation experience in integrating the Web and BADA-III, and also explore the effects of BADA-III/Web with some synthetic queries.

The objective of the work presented in this paper is to develop a computational capability based on the indirect variational boundary element method (IVBEM) to evaluate appropriate velocity boundary conditions on an assembly of piston type sources such that they can recreate a prescribed acoustic field. Information for the acoustic pressure of the original acoustic field at certain field points constitutes the input to the developed process. Several new developments associated with the IVBEM are completed within the field reconstruction process. A new formulation for treating irregular frequencies in the IVBEM is developed and implemented in the field reconstruction process. The velocities on the piston type sources are computed from transfer functions between the field points, where the acoustic pressure of the original field is prescribed, and the velocity boundary condition on each element of the generic source. The IVBEM is employed for computing the transfer functions. A singular value decomposition solver is integrated with the IVBEM computations in order to evaluate the velocity boundary conditions from the transfer functions. Finally, an algorithm is developed that identifies the optimum field points where the acoustic pressure of the original field must be prescribed. The optimum field points are selected from a set of prescribed candidate points. The selection of the optimum points is based on the geometric characteristics of the generic source, the frequency of analysis, and the properties of the medium. Learning the influence of additive noise and channel distortions from training data is an effective approach for robust speech recognition. We have proposed a novel method of discriminative learning of environmental features according to minimum classification error (MCE) criterion in previous work, in which additive noise is expressed by the weighted combination of multiple types of noises, and the channel distortions are assumed to consist of the channel distortions of the whole training data and the current utterance. In this paper, we use a Gaussian distribution to stand for the distribution of additive noise, and adaptively learn the combination factors of the channel distortions. The current method is proven better than the former one by experiments.

This paper proposes a method based on constraint programming to realize workflow systems that handle regular and exceptional transactions. In this method, regulations placed on each activity in a workflow task are described as constraints that represent the final data to be generated by that activity. A workflow task is realized by a mechanism in which the agent allocated to each activity keeps data consistent with the constraints set on that activity. Our method provides the following advantages: (1) no programming is needed to manage exceptional transactions, (2) guaranteed consistency among data in a workflow task, and (3) easy maintenance of workflow systems. © 1999 Scripta Technica.
