In this poster session we are reporting on the results of two, three-week summer graduate teaching experiences that took place in Nanjing, China over a two-year period. A faculty exchange program was entered into between Southeast University of Nanjing China and Purdue University Calumet of Hammond, Indiana, USA. One of the goals of the exchange program was to expose Chinese students to the instructional methods employed by United States Universities. By understanding the cultural differences and utilizing various teaching methodologies employed by American teachers, the faculty and students involved in these three-week classroom intensive training courses were able to adapt and successfully complete the graduate level material that was presented.

DeepCancer: deep learning for brain tumor detection-based application system

A brain tumor is the abnormal cells that growth in the brain, and it is considered as one of the most dangerous diseases that lead to the cause of death. Diagnosis at early is important for increasing the survival rate from the brain tumors. Specialists can identify the tumors manually, but it is very time and effort consuming, and are subject to human error, especially when dealing with large amounts of images. The automatic identification algorithms-based applications can facilitate the process. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of detecting brain cancer based on images using Deep Learning (DL) techniques and statistical operations. The features were extracted using two models of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), (VGG-19 and AlexNet), then they were used to generate new datasets for statistical operations. CNN is used to extract features with distinct details from brain MRI images. The data were trained in three different training–testing data splitting ratios. Then, the features were classified based on the KNN, RF, and SVM to find the best accuracy of brain MRI image. At the end, the obtained classification accuracy was in favor of statistical operations especially for Large-Value, and Merge between features using KNN (99.1) and SVM (99.1). The features that extracted used in this study can provide high influence on the classification accuracy. The results across all three training–testing data splitting ratios were almost similar, and this approves that the brain cancer can be identified with high accuracy even if the training dataset sizes were minimal. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Adversarial Lens Flares: A Threat to Camera-Based Systems in Smart Devices

Evaluating the potential risks posed by adversarial examples is crucial for securely deploying deep neural network (DNN)-based Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Although adversarial patches are considered a primary physical attack strategy, recent studies suggest their real-world impact may be less significant. Research has explored using optical tools like lasers or projectors to create perturbations, but these methods are uncommon in natural settings. Given the visual challenges inherent in natural environments, the prevalent occurrence of lens flare is noteworthy. This phenomenon can obstruct human vision and may also be exploited maliciously. In this article, we emphasize for the first time that lens flares produced by light sources exhibit strong adversarial characteristics. In the physical world, lens flare that occurs around and directly impacts the target object can easily deceive advanced models in various real-world scenarios. We show that merely using a regular flashlight to generate adversarial flare is sufficient to easily deceive well-trained models during both day and night in typical traffic situations, with an average attack success rate (ASR) of over 90%. Furthermore, by utilizing real lens flares as perturbations, we introduce a novel digital-domain closed-box adversarial attack method, primarily designed for extensive experimental validation of adversarial lens flare attacks in the physical world. Experimental results demonstrate that adversarial lens flare attacks effectively deceive state-of-the-art models, including YoloV8, DinoV2, and other three baseline models, achieving average ASRs as high as 95.4% on GTSRB and 82.8% on MTSD. We also discuss the limitations and defense mechanisms against this attack. © 2014 IEEE.

Multi-label, Classification-based Prediction of Breast Cancer Metastasis Directions

Predicting the metastatic direction of primary breast cancer (BC), thus assisting physicians in precise treatment, strict follow-up, and effectively improving the prognosis. The clinical data of 293,946 patients with primary BC diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Multiple interpolations and Multi-label Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique methods were used for data analysis, and machine learning model was established for multi-label classification. Finally, Surgical information, lymph node status, distant metastasis, tumor size, chemotherapy, histological type, and radiotherapy had significant influence as inputs. Compared with the k-nearest neighbor model, average accuracies of the decision tree and random forest (RF) models increased from 88.84% to 93.59% and 94.14%, respectively. Their average precision, recall rate, F1 score, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and weighted-F1 increased from 87.24% to 95.85% and 94.74%, 87.73% to 90.40% and 91.76%, 87.07% to 92.16% and 93.45%, 97.11% to 99.53% and 99.95%, 82.13% to 89.44% and 90.48%, respectively. In conclusion, the RF model, which showed the best performance, can be used in multi-label prediction of BC metastasis directions, and can assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients with primary BC. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). IPFA-Net: Important Points Feature Aggregating Net for Point Cloud Classification and Segmentation

This paper focuses on the problems of point cloud deep neural networks in classification and segmentation tasks, including losing important information during down-sampling, ignoring relationships among points when extracting features, and network performance being susceptible to the sparsity of point cloud. To begin with, this paper proposes a farthest point sampling-important points sampling method for down-sampling, which can preserve important information of point clouds and maintain the geometry of input data. Then, the local feature relation aggregating method is proposed for feature extraction, improving the network's ability to learn contextual information and extract rich local region features. Based on these methods, the important points feature aggregating net(IPFA-Net) is designed for point cloud classification and segmentation tasks. Furthermore, this paper proposes the multi-scale multi-density feature connecting method to reduce the negative impact of point cloud data sparsity on network performance. Finally, the effectiveness of IPFA-Net is demonstrated through experiments on ModelNet40, ShapeNet part, and ScanNet v2 datasets. IPFA-Net is robust to reducing the number of point clouds, with only a 3.3% decrease in accuracy under a 16-fold reduction of point number. In the part segmentation experiments, our method achieves the best segmentation performance for five objects.

Researchers have recently achieved significant advances in deep learning techniques, which in turn has substantially advanced other research disciplines, such as natural language processing, image processing, speech recognition, and software engineering. Various deep learning techniques have been successfully employed to facilitate software engineering tasks, including code generation, software refactoring, and fault localization. Many studies have also been presented in top conferences and journals, demonstrating the applications of deep learning techniques in resolving various software engineering tasks. However,although several surveys have provided overall pictures of the application of deep learning techniques in software engineering,they focus more on learning techniques, that is, what kind of deep learning techniques are employed and how deep models are trained or fine-tuned for software engineering tasks. We still lack surveys explaining the advances of subareas in software engineering driven by deep learning techniques, as well as challenges and opportunities in each subarea. To this end, in this study, we present the first task-oriented survey on deep learning-based software engineering. It covers twelve major software engineering subareas significantly impacted by deep learning techniques. Such subareas spread out through the whole lifecycle of software development and maintenance, including requirements engineering, software development, testing, maintenance, and developer collaboration. As we believe that deep learning may provide an opportunity to revolutionize the whole discipline of software engineering, providing one survey covering as many subareas as possible in software engineering can help future research push forward the frontier of deep learning-based software engineering more systematically. A mathematical multi-objective optimization model and metaheuristic algorithm for effective advertising in the social internet of things

The integration of social networks with the Internet of Things (IoT) has been explored in recent research, giving rise to the Social Internet of Things (SIoT). One promising application of SIoT is viral marketing, which plays a critical role in modern advertising. However, current solutions proposed for viral marketing are often impractical in real-world scenarios, and there has been limited investigation into viral marketing within the context of SIoT. To address this issue, we present a multi-objective integer linear programming model named ILP-ASoT that facilitates advertising through SIoT. Our approach introduces two realistic parameters: the node sociality rate and the node appropriateness rate as an advertising destination. By balancing the cost of selecting a seed set with the number of users who receive the advertisement, our model offers an appropriate trade-off. Since this is proven as an NP-hard problem, A PSO-based metaheuristic algorithm is proposed to provide near-optimal solutions for advertising in SIoT, called PSO-ASoT. Through simulations, we show that our PSO-ASoT algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in several metrics, such as influence spread, advertising cost, and duplicated advertising rate. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
