Particle size distribution of the organic matters in the treated leachate using aged-refuse-bioreactor

Micro-filtration membrane （1.2 μm）, hyper-filtration membrane （0.45 μm） and nano-filtration membrane （1000 Dalton） were used to characterize the particle size distribution of the organic matters in effluent leachate treated by the aged-refuse-bioreactor（ARB） installed at Laogang Refuse Landfill, Shanghai. The results showed that the particle size distribution of the treated fresh and aged leachate using the ARB were quite consistent. The organic matter with particle size below 1000 Dalton accounted for about 90%, balanced with the suspended （〉1.2 μm） and colloidal （1000 Dalton-l.2μm） matters. Hence, it is proposed that coagulation, nano-filtration and electrically chemical oxidation may be not applicable for the advanced treatment for the effluents to reach the discharge standard limit value defined in Chinese national Standard for pollution control on the Landfill Site of Municipal Solid Wastes （GB16889-2008）, CODCr〈100 mg/L. Aged refuse bioreactor combined reverse osmosis was suggested as an economically and technically feasible technology to treat sanitary landfill leachate.

The feasibility of powdered activated carbon (PAC) as an adsorbent to eliminate the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the water for reuse has been studied. PAC exhibits a high affinity to adsorb PFOA on its surface. More than 95％ of PFOA can be adsorbed onto PAC surface at the first hour. For common reuse water, the most optical PAC concentration was 0.125g/L. As illustrated by IR spectra, PAC is an economical and effective adsorbent in treatment and reuse of wastewater containing PFOA. The results obtained in the study helped in developing a new process in the water reuse system to eliminate PFOA, which established a theoretical foundation for PFOA physical removal technology.

In order to enhance the efficiency of anaerobic digestion, the effect of alkaline pre-treatment has been studied on waste activated sludge(WAS) from a wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) in Shanghai,China. The results indicated that sodium hydroxide strongly influenced the solubilization of sludge and subsequent anaerobic digestion. The COD and protein solubilization was most effective when sludge was pretreated at high pH value. At pH=12, COD solubilization achieved about 50％,which induced 40 times increase in SCOD from 200mg/l to 8000mg/*** at low pH(pH ≤9), the degree of COD and protein solubilization was not *** subsequent anaerobic digestion was also improved by alkaline pre-treatment. WAS at higher pH resulted in a better removal of COD, further degradation of VS and larger production of methane. However, in the beginning of anaerobic digestion under condition pH=12, a inhibition period of one week *** mechanisms of alkaline pre-treatment were also discussed.

This paper reviewed the international and China' s pilot program progress of VEAs, analyzed experiences, driving forces and barriers in the process of advancing VEAs in the past six years in China. The results showed: VEAs have become one of the most efficient policy tools in environmental management in most of the OECD member states. However, in China, which are still at an initial stage though developed rapidly in some regions and industrial sectors. With the analysis of the current and future developmental trends of the environmental pressure China faces, this paper pointed out that China should introduce the VEAs tools as early as possible. And at last, the paper proposed the policy design and implementation principle, policy implementation schemes of VEAs, also, key fields of VEAs in the nearer future and the roadmap to advance VEAs in China were suggested. The paper posed that VEAs could become a very useful policy tools in environmental protection, if China government prompt the policy with great efforts.

Chitosan can be a potential substitute for aluminum salts and synthetic polyelectrolytes in water treatment because it can: (1) avoid the health effects from residual aluminum (III) and synthetic polymers; (2) produce biodegradable sludge; and (3) reuse the crab shell. In this study, the chitosan flocculation characteristics in water were studied firstly, and then the combined flocculation of chitosan and inorganic flocculant is tested. The results show that the chitosan has favourable coagulation behavior. But the optimum dosage of chitosan removing turbidity and organic matter is different by using chitosan alone. However, the combined flocculation can obviously promote their each coagulant behavior and remarkably enhance the effect of organic matter removal. More importance, the optimal effect of turbidity and organic matter removal can be achieved at the same time. Comparing the effect of three inorganic coagulants combined with chitosan, the effect of chitosan combined with polymeric aluminium-ferric is best, under optimum conditions, the rate of removing turbidity, COD Mn and UV 254 achieved 97%, 44% and 55% respectively. And whether chitosan combining with inorganic flocculation or not, on the best conditions, the residual aluminum concentration is less than the examination methods limit in effluent water.

Matrix-bound phosphine in Ny-Alesund Area of Arctic

Phosphine, a ubiquitous trace gas in the atmosphere, acts as a carrier of gasous phosphorus in the biogeochemical cycle. The research of phosphine will show new light on the mechanisms of how the phos- phorus supplement influence the biogeochemical cycle and global wanning. In this paper, we detect the phosphine in Arctic Pole area for the first time. The result shows that matrix-bound phosphine（MBP） ex- ists in all the samplings. Phosphine distributions varied with different environmental origins. Average phosphine concentrations in tundra soil, lake sediments, sea sediments, seabird-droppings and deer guanos were 14.17ng/kg dry, 35.44 kg dry, 67.20 kg dry, 32.9 ng/kg dry, and 25.52 ng/kg dry re- spectively. Correlation analysis shows that there is an obviously positive correlation between Porg and MBP. It could be concluded that anaerobic decomposition of Porg and the mechano-chemistry action of the rock probably are the possible reasons explaining the mechanism of MBP production in Arctic Pole area.

Membrane-making wastewater contains DMF, with high COD, toxicity and non-biodegradability. In this work, aerobic Fe-C micro-electrolysis and three-dimensional electrodes technology were applied for the pretreatment aiming to improve the biodegradability of the wastewater. It was found that the optional pretreatment conditions were pH 3 for Fe-C micro-electrolysis and pH 5 for the three -dimensional electrodes oxidation. As a result, the B/C increased to 0.38 from below 0.2, and the COD removal reached 99％ by the combined process of pretreatment and biological contact reactor in a three-month test, and the effluent DMF concentration was below 10 mg/L.

A kinds of Methamidophos wastewater was pretreated by acidification and Fenton oxidation process, and the results demonstrated that, at pH value of 2.0 and reaction temperature 100degC, a removal efficiency of TOC and sulfide of was reached to 18.33% and 90.7% respectively, at pH value of 4.0, n(H 2 O 2 ):n (Fe 2+ ) of 30 and 3.0% of H 2 O 2 , that of TOC was reached to about 24.3%, while at addition of 20% Ca(OH) 2 and pH value of 11.0 to 12.0, total of inorganic phosphorus was precipitated completely from the wastewater.

In this paper, the authors conducted a survey of 1700 households to investigate and analyze the urban and rural households' waste household electrical appliances (WHEA) disposal habit, as well as their attitudes on recycling modes and the deposit-refund policy. The investigation results show that more than half of urban and rural households' WHEA are sold to private collectors (called non-formal collector in China), only less than 10% WHEA collected by the government or other formal collectors. And significant preference differences exist in recycling modes and relative policies between urban and rural households. More than half of urban households accept the deposit-refund policy, but most rural informants reject this policy. key recommendations will then be outlined concerning the future strategic development to encourage and facilitate households to engaging in formal WHEA recycling system.

In this paper, we calculate the coal efficient utilization ratio (CEUR) of 29 regions in China from 1995 to 2006, by applying data envelopment analysis (DEA) based on the regional own production frontier. And three inputs (labor, capital stock and coal utilization amount) and one output (GDP) are chosen for DEA. Results show that, the more developed area is, the higher CEUR is. The eastern, central and western areas have the highest, medium and lowest 1995-2006 average CEUR (77.37%, 53.22% and 43.34%), respectively, which implies eastern area's coal utilization is the most efficient and western has the lowest efficiency. Chinese government should emphasize particularly on coal utilization efficiency in central and western area. More investment in coal management and introducing advanced technology are the urgent tasks for central and western area to improve coal efficiency and realize sustainable development.
