Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

This paper deals with the study of balanced circular formation for n unicycles agents. It has been presented in the literature that there exists more than one balanced circular formation when the agents are following cyclic pursuit *** modify cyclic pursuit strategy by introducing a parameter called deviation angle with the hope to get unique equilibrium formation. The modified strategy is called deviated cyclic pursuit. Monte Carlo simulations has been carried out to find the range of deviation angle where a unique equilibrium formation exists. © 2015, IFAC. This work mainly deals with the sliding mode control for the sloshing liquid in a container using Collocated and Non-Collocated linearization techniques. The comparative study of these techniques is done for the first time for a slosh-container system, which represents a class of underactuated systems. A linear sliding surface based sliding mode control is derived for both the approaches which rejects the matched uncertainties or model mismatches and disturbances. Some remarkable comparative points are noted and highlighted with the supporting simulations.

We consider the problem of oblivious transfer (OT) over OFDM and MIMO wireless communication systems where only the receiver knows the channel state information. The sender and receiver also have unlimited access to a noise-free real channel. Using a physical layer approach, based on the properties of the noisy fading channel, we propose a scheme for honest-but-curious parties that enables the transmitter to send obliviously one-of-two files, i.e., without knowing which one has been actually requested by the receiver, while also ensuring that the receiver does not get any information about the other file. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. A comparative study of persistence based convergence rate estimates to consensus

This article presents a comparative study of convergence rate estimates for degenerate gradient flows in the context of multi-agent systems. A novel analysis methodology was introduced in (Roy Chowdhury and Srikant, 2014) based on the classical notions of persistence of excitation (PE) and uniform complete observability (UCO) to study the exponential stability of consensus protocol with time-varying agent dynamics. The new technique allowed precise computation of the convergence rate for single integrator agent dynamics. The purpose of this article is principally twofold. Firstly, we revisit the continuous time spanning edge agent dynamics proposed in (Roy Chowdhury and Srikant, 2014) and present a different analysis approach to study the convergence property for the same. Our analysis mimics the recent result by Brockett (Brockett, 2000) on single agent adaptive control. Secondly, the convergence rate estimates arrived at from the two approaches are compared. Simulations on different examples are provided to elucidate the main theoretical contribution. © 2015

Proportional derivative plus feed forward (PD+FF) feedback control laws exist to locally asymptotically track a smooth reference trajectory having bounded velocity for a fully actuated simple mechanical system (SMS) on a Riemannian manifold. Almost-global asymptotically stable (AGAS) tracking for an SMS on a compact Lie group is also addressed in the literature by observing that the closed loop error dynamics is obtained by lifting the gradient vector field of a navigation function and stabilizing the error dynamics about the Lie group identity. Almost-global setpoint stabilization for an SMS on a Riemannian manifold is often tackled by introducing a gradient field of a Morse function as a feedback control force for the dissipative SMS. In this paper we address the almost-global tracking problem for an SMS on a compact Riemannian manifold embedded in Euclidean space by explicitly introducing the error dynamics. A control law, including both feedback and feedforward terms, is then synthesized for the purpose of almost-global stabilization of the error dynamics .

This article presents a systematic overview of stable stochastic predictive control, its underlying concepts, and a transmission protocol which does not require any computational or storage facility at the actuator end. We assume that the control channel has i.i.d. packet dropouts. Our results ensure mean square boundedness of the states of the closed-loop plant for any positive bound on control in the presence of potentially unbounded additive noise. The proposed control mechanism stabilizes the system for any non-zero probability of successful transmission.
