Lifetime studies of organic light emitting diodes are necessary to both understand and mitigate causes of degradation. Here, electroluminescence (EL) studies of green organic light-emitting diode (OLED) pixels are measured continuously using three different dc currents over a period of one week, and their slow EL degradation is accurately fit to an analytical expression with only two fit parameters. The slower-than-exponential EL decay is fit to an empirical unified heavy-tail function that can interpolate between power-law algebraic decays (AD) and stretched-exponential decays (SE). Whereas SE and AD are largely indistinguishable down to 50% of the initial luminance, here we report degradation down to 10% of the initial luminance which most closely fits an AD function with remarkable precision over the entire duration of the experiment. All relaxations share the same characteristic exponent β = 0.53 in the power law decay, whereas the characteristic time-scale τ for degradation decreases with a power-law exponent B = 1.9 as the current increases. The high degree of accuracy in the fit allows asymptotic predictions at time scales that are orders of magnitude longer than the duration of the data collection. The voltage across the OLED is simultaneously monitored under constant-current degradation and reveals an early-onset time scale where the voltage reaches a minimum before degradation runoff. © 2025 SPIE.

The continuous advancement of communication systems necessitates the development of algorithms capable of identifying and correcting errors that may arise during data transmission and storage. This pursuit of reliability is particularly crucial in critical systems and sectors that are challenging to access, such as space exploration, passenger transportation, and financial services. In this context, the Error Correction Code (ECC) is a fundamental tool for providing a certain degree of reliability to these systems. This research proposes a novel technique to enhance the error correction capacity of ECCs by leveraging region overlapping. Specifically, we propose correcting data areas protected by more than one ECC, which allows for the inference of logical correlations between ECCs, thereby augmenting their error detection and correction capability. Our focus is bidimensional codeword structures, commonly known as 2D-ECCs, which entail a hierarchical arrangement of ECCs. We evaluated the ECC proposal, comparing its error correction and detection capabilities. Through this evaluation, we aim to demonstrate the technique's efficacy in bolstering the reliability and resilience of communication systems, particularly in critical domains where precision and accuracy are paramount.

This paper proposes a measurement technique for an integrated complex filter. The proposed method is based on two measurement methods with integrated circuitry for calibration. It is accomplished by applying square waves to an FUT (Filter Under Test) instead of sinusoidal waves or by superposing transfer characteristics obtained by applying a single sinusoidal wave to an FUT. In both of the above methods, the output signal connected to the external measurement equipment via a 50 Ω coaxial cable and so on. In this case, the output signal of the FUT should be amplified by internal or external amplifiers, which degrades the response. However, it is cancelled out by the proposed calibration circuitry with some analog switches. In addition to the above, for the RC polyphase filter, the source resistance and the load capacitance degrade the measurement results and their effect is discussed. The validity of the proposal is confirmed through computer simulation for a third-order RCPF whose passband is 8–40 MHz fabricated by Phenitec 0.6 µm CMOS process. It is shown that the measurement error is −1.10 dB for the square-wave method and −1.00 dB and −0.43 degrees for the superposition method at 40 MHz. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Downlink transmission of a nonorthogonal visible light communication (VLC) system, empowered by autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs), is studied for coexisting enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultrareliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and massive machine-type communication (mMTC) services. A joint resource allocation problem involving user association, transmit power, and flight trajectory of AAVs is formulated, with the goal of characterizing a multiobjective tradeoff as a weighted sum of the power consumption of each AAV and the perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) of its associated eMBB users, while ensuring the service-specific requirements for eMBB, mMTC, and URLLC are met. Assuming the imperfection of channel state information (CSI), we invoke a generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) methodology, leveraging tools from convex optimization and multiagent deep reinforcement learning to address this problem. We further analytically derive the upper and lower bounds on the reward function for each AAV as a learning agent. Extensive simulations confirm that our proposed method outperforms the single-agent counterpart in the literature, with up to a 22% reduction in power consumption and a 13% gain in perceived QoE. Additionally, compared to the globally optimal brute-force method for AAV-user association, our proposed method experiences only a trivial performance loss in a small-scale scenario. © 2014 IEEE.

Human–computer interaction (HCI) focuses on designing efficient and intuitive interactions between humans and computer systems. Recent advancements have utilized multimodal approaches, such as electroencephalography (EEG)-based systems combined with other biosignals, along with deep learning to enhance performance and reliability. However, no systematic review has consolidated findings on EEG-based multimodal HCI systems. This review examined 124 studies published from 2016 to 2024, retrieved from the Web of Science database, focusing on hybrid EEG-based multimodal HCI systems employing deep learning. The keywords used for evaluation were as follows: ‘Deep Learning’ AND ‘EEG’ AND (‘fNIRS’ OR ‘NIRS’ OR ‘MEG’ OR ‘fMRI’ OR ‘EOG’ OR ‘EMG’ OR ‘ECG’ OR ‘PPG’ OR ‘GSR’). Main topics explored are: (1) types of biosignals used with EEG, (2) neural network architectures, (3) fusion strategies, (4) system performance, and (5) target applications. Frequently paired signals, such as EOG, EMG, and fNIRS, effectively complement EEG by addressing its limitations. Convolutional neural networks are extensively employed for spatio-temporal-spectral feature extraction, with early and intermediate fusion strategies being the most commonly used. Applications, such as sleep stage classification, emotion recognition, and mental state decoding, have shown notable performance improvements. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including the lack of real-time online systems, difficulties in signal synchronization, limited data availability, and insufficient explainable AI (XAI) methods to interpret signal interactions. Emerging solutions, such as portable systems, lightweight deep learning models, and data augmentation techniques, offer promising pathways to address these issues. Centralized machine learning algorithms in vehicular networks face privacy and resource constraints. Federated Learning (FL) addresses these by enabling collaborative model training without sharing raw data. To incentivize vehicle participation despite resource constraints, we propose a contract between Roadside Units (RSUs) and vehicles, specifying required computation resources and rewards based on local data quality. The contract is designed to maximize the utility of the RSU, subject to constraints that ensure the participation of the vehicles in the task and truthful reporting of their data quality parameter. However, designing an optimal contract with classical methods is limited to specific utility functions. To extend the design methodology of optimal contracts to a broader range of utility functions, our study proposes a deep learning-based solution. Specifically, we present a novel application of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), marking the first instance of applying DNNs in contract theory-based incentive mechanisms to achieve nearoptimal contracts. We design the DNN's structure to inherently satisfy specific constraints of the optimization problem, enhancing its efficiency and accuracy in determining the optimal contract. We utilize an augmented Lagrangian method to approximate the optimal contract in federated learning tasks. A case study on traffic sign recognition demonstrates the applicability and effectiveness of our method. Comparing our approach with the well-known generative diffusion model shows that in the FL scenarios, the DNN results are closer to the optimal contract compared to those of the generative diffusion model. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, with mammography screening as the most effective method for the early detection. Ensuring proper positioning in mammography is critical, as poor positioning can lead to diagnostic errors, increased patient stress, and higher costs due to recalls. Despite advancements in deep learning (DL) for breast cancer diagnostics, limited focus has been given to evaluating mammography positioning. This paper introduces a novel DL methodology to quantitatively assess mammogram positioning quality, specifically in mediolateral oblique (MLO) views using attention and coordinate convolution modules. Our method identifies key anatomical landmarks, such as the nipple and pectoralis muscle, and automatically draws a posterior nipple line (PNL), offering robust and inherently explainable alternative to well-known classification and regression-based approaches. We compare the performance of proposed methodology with various regression and classification-based models. The CoordAtt UNet model achieved the highest accuracy of 88.63% ± 2.84 and specificity of 90.25% ± 4.04, along with a noteworthy sensitivity of 86.04% ± 3.41. In landmark detection, the same model also recorded the lowest mean errors in key anatomical points and the smallest angular error of 2.42∘. Our results indicate that models incorporating attention mechanisms and CoordConv module increase the accuracy in classifying breast positioning quality and detecting anatomical landmarks. This study addresses the Testing Facility Location with Constrained Queue Time Problem. This optimization problem focuses on determining the best places to deploy testing sites and their available testers for infectious diseases, while constraining the maximum time in the queue with a given probability. An integer programming model is introduced and applied to the three biggest counties, in terms of population, of Florida, United States. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the model's output, aiming to check if the queueing time constraint is being satisfied. Through the experiments, a testing facility deployment plan can be determined for each county and further validated by the simulation. The results show that the solutions returned by the model behaved successfully when submitted to the Monte Carlo method, not exceeding the time in the queue in more than the predefined probability.

Adenosine triphosphate plays a vital role in providing energy and enabling key cellular processes through interactions with binding proteins. The increasing amount of protein sequence data necessitates computational methods for identifying binding sites. However, experimental identification of adenosine triphosphate-binding residues remains challenging. To address the challenge, we developed a multi-window convolutional neural network architecture taking pre-trained protein language model embeddings as input features. In particular, multiple parallel convolutional layers scan for motifs localized to different window sizes. Max pooling extracts salient features concatenated across windows into a final multi-scale representation for residue-level classification. On benchmark datasets, our model achieves an area under the ROC curve of 0.95, significantly improving on prior sequence-based models and outperforming convolutional neural network baselines. This demonstrates the utility of pre-trained language models and multi-window convolutional neural networks for advanced sequence-based prediction of adenosine triphosphate-binding residues. Our approach provides a promising new direction for elucidating binding mechanisms and interactions from primary structure. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

In medical imaging, harmonization plays a crucial role in reducing variability arising from diverse imaging devices and protocols. Patient images obtained under different computed tomography (CT) scan conditions may show varying performance when analyzed using an artificial intelligence model or quantitative assessment. This necessitates the need for harmonization. Virtual imaging trial (VIT) through digital simulation can be used to develop and assess the effectiveness of harmonization models to minimize data variability. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of a VIT platform for harmonization across a range of lung imaging scenarios. To ensure consistent and reliable analysis across different virtual imaging datasets, we conducted a multi-objective assessment encompassing three typical task-based scenarios: lung structure segmentation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) quantification, and lung nodule quantification. A physics-informed deep neural network was applied as the unified harmonization model for all three tasks. Evaluation results before and after harmonization reveal three findings: 1) modestly improved Dice scores and reduced Hausdorff Distances at 95th Percentile in lung structure segmentation;2) decreased variation in biomarkers and radiomics features in COPD quantification;and 3) increased number of radiomics features with high intraclass correlation coefficient in lung nodule quantification. The results demonstrate the significant potential of harmonization across various task-based scenarios and provide a benchmark for the design of efficient harmonizers. © 2025 SPIE.
