An on-line pulse trains analysis system of the wire-EDM process

Ignition delay time (Td) has been widely used to distinguish the abnormal discharges from the normal ones in wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process. In this paper an on-line analysis system for the causality of the Td data sequences was developed to evaluate the machining performance of WEDM process. The system is composed of a stand-alone Td processing circuitry and a user-friendly computer program for data analysis. The Td processing circuitry calculates and records the Td of every single electrical discharge in the first place, and then transmits the Td data via an embedded communication port to a desktop or notebook computer. The computer program, after performing the analysis tasks, will display the result in a graphic way. Two mathematical algorithms were employed for the analysis: autocorrelation function and Fourier transform. Through experiments under different working conditions, it was found that the autocorrelation function could be used to detect if arc or short circuit discharges take place consecutively, and to distinguish the WEDM process with similar Td distributions. On the other hand, the spectral analysis revealed that several factors were identified to be able to induce certain periodic patterns of Td data. These factors include the length of wire electrode, the water pressure, etc. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ability to think critically is vital to success in engineering and technology practice. Employers in these fields, however, consistently identify critical thinking as one of the skills that is not sufficiently developed in new college graduates, and call upon engineering and technology educators to address this obvious need. Unfortunately, critical thinking is a developmental skill that cannot be taught simply by the usual methods - step-by-step instruction followed by repetitive drills - used for other technical skills. Critical thinking must instead be nurtured through practical experience solving problems with appropriate guidance and reinforcement. One very effective context for developing such skills is in open-ended assignments with no single "right" answer, to which students must apply not only their technical knowledge, but also an element of critical judgment, to determine which approach among many possible will yield the most reasonable and applicable results. For educators, a key component of nurturing critical thinking is learning to recognize and reinforce it when it happens, or nudge students toward such behaviors when it is not happening but should be. Toward that end, we have developed a rubric to assess critical thinking during several phases (initial design or set-up;testing of method;evaluation of results) of open-ended assignments in engineering and technology. The rubric is designed to be generally applicable to open-ended assignments at every level (freshman through senior) in engineering and technology, allowing users to track the development of critical thinking skills as students progress through the curriculum. We present the rubric and preliminary results from applying it to two different open-ended assignments. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a network of sensors that has a very large scale of nodes with a tight resources limitation. WSN is application specific, with a wide range of applications in military, survey, industrial, up to home usage. The major problems for WSN are resource limitations and dynamic network, which require unique algorithms for unique applications. Our study focused on the implementation and the characterization of the Gravity algorithm, with the Flooding algorithm as a comparison. The Gravity algorithm uses the gravity weight which is stored on each node to form a virtual contour. This contour will guide the message to reach the sink. This work is the first implementation of the Gravity model in OMNeT++. Simulations conducted in the full mesh and the layered topology show that the Gravity algorithm uses less energy and a higher diversity factor compared to the Flooding algorithm. A similar result is also acquired when the probability of failures are considered. The result shows that the Gravity algorithm outperforms the Flooding algorithm while still maintaining the simplicity of the algorithm. This is important to a WSN which is resources limited. Only a small amount of memory is needed for the gravity weight calculation and storage.

Faculty members from Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) have worked jointly with engineers from National Instruments (NI) to develop a new freshman engineering course. This course is entitled 'Introduction to ECE Design' and is constructed around the use of the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT robotics system. NI partnered with LEGO to jointly develop the programming software for the MINDSTORMS NXT, and their engineers are uniquely positioned to provide insight into the use and functionality of these kits. NI engineers have not only provided technical support but have also conceived and designed most of the laboratories for the course. This course addresses the diverse objectives of providing students with a systems-level design experience at the beginning of their academic programs and introducing them to a broad range of ECE disciplines. A primary goal is to enable students to make better-informed decisions when choosing whether or not to major in electrical engineering or computer engineering. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Historically, electrical engineering students have been very proficient in the application of mathematics. At California State University we have experienced, recently, a negative shift of mathematical interest and therefore a lack of progress in the understanding of basic concepts that require a strong mathematical background. This problem stems from the lack of mathematical skills and studying habits. One way to solve this problem is to engage our students into the application of mathematics with simple, yet, powerful problems. An assessment of such engagement occurs every week with a quiz that spans the material covered during the previous week and tests some of the mathematical and engineering skills. This paper attempts to show the results of such assessment and the outcome of a class in which such approach was tasted. During this semester we are testing this technique again in a different course. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

We have studied the temperature behavior of the electrical resistivities ρ(T) in a series of tin‐doped indium‐oxide films with different residual resistivities ρ0 varying from 218 to 568 μΩ cm. We found that the temperature dependence of ρ can be well described by the Bloch‐Grüneisen law from 300 K down to about 100 K. In particular, we observed that the strength of the electron‐phonon coupling, βBG (which characterizes a prefactor in the Bloch‐Grüneisen formula) increases linearly with increasing ρ0. This result is not understood in terms of current theoretical concept for electron‐phonon interaction in metals.

An appropriate definition and efficient computation of similarity (or distance) measures between two stochastic models are of theoretical and practical interest. In this work, a similarity measure, that is, a modified "generalized probability product kernel," of Gaussian hidden Markov models is introduced. Two efficient schemes for computing this similarity measure are presented. The first scheme adopts a forward procedure analogous to the approach commonly used in probability evaluation of observation sequences on HMMs. The second scheme is based on the specially defined similarity transition matrix of two Gaussian hidden Markov models. Two scaling procedures are also proposed to solve the out-of-precision problem in the implementation. The effectiveness of the proposed methods has been evaluated on simulated observations with predefined model parameters, and on natural texture images. Promising experimental results have been observed. © 2005 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

He is the author of a text on Numerical Methods Applications in Engineering. In addition to numerous technical papers he is also the author of the ISA film on Boiler Feedwater Control Systems. A registered professional engineer in the state of Pennsylvania Mr. Banham is co-author of a forthcoming handbook on preparing for the Professional Engineering Examination in mechanical engineering. Mr. Banham holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University his graduate studies were taken at the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Instrument Society of America. He served as a member of the ISA Education Committee from 1964 through 1973 and as a member of the ISA Power Plant Dynamics Committee since 1969. His service on the latter committee includes terms as Executive Secretary Vice-Chairman and Chairman. Among other honors Mr. Banham was the winner of the Naval Ship Engineering Center's first Technical Achievement Award (1963) Technical Publication Award (1974) and Equal Employment Opportunity Award (1978). One of the most serious problems encountered in Naval steam plants following World War II was the unreliable performance of boiler and main feedpump pneumatic control systems. In addition to control component and system design deficiencies, these control systems suffered from inadequate methods to measure and adjust system alignment. This paper describes the development of a set of procedures for on-line alignment verification (OLV) of pneumatic main boiler and feedpump control systems. The procedures are designed for use by N avy control system technicians and, in addition to on-line alignment verification, provide guidance for troubleshooting and for performing system alignment. Procedure static checks measure steady state steaming performance and OLV procedure dynamic checks measure the ability of the boiler and control systems to respond to load changes. The paper describes typical control system characteristics that influence OLV procedure content and the supporting analysis that was used to establish alignment criteria ranges that satisfy both steady state and transient performance requirements. Also described is the alignment criteria tolerance analysis along with the steps involved in a typical OLV check procedure development. Descriptions of the various OLV checks, troubleshooting procedures and alignment procedures are provided. Typical shipboard implementation requirements are described and experience to date with the procedures is provided along with a status report on OLV procedure implementations.
